[Incomplete membrane stenoses of the duodenum (author's transl)].

A report in 2 children with incomplete membrane stenoses of the duodenum and further abnormalities in the gastrointestinal tract, the urogenital region and on the skeleton. In the first case ileus symptoms existed in early infancy following operated anal atresia. A duodenal diverticulum near the papilla was found with reflux of contrast medium in the biliary and pancreatic tracts. In the second case the clinical symptoms were limited; however, the x-ray findings of an intraduodenal pseudodiverticulum were impressive. Both patients were operated successfully by removal of the incomplete duodenal membrane. Both cases clearly showed the great variability in clinical symptoms with etiologically similar disease patterns and typical x-ray signs.

[Tubular colon duplication (author's transl)].

Report on two patients with tubular colon duplication and severe further abnormalities in the urogenital system in particular in the sense of double abnormalities. In addition omphalocele was present in the first child, and vertebra-rib abnormalities in the second child; hence the children were to be classified as according to Kottra and Dodds. No disturbances in early pregnancy could be established in either case. Surgery was performed. The second case and its surgical treatment is concurrently reported as a presentation in "Zeitschrift für Kinderchirurgie" by Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. v.d.Oelsnitz.

Cross reactivity of digitoxin and spironolactone in two radioimmunoassays for serum digoxin.

We measured the cross reactivity of two medications--digitoxin and spironolactone--in two digoxin radioimmunoassay (liquid and solid-phase) kit procedures. Both tests showed similar average percentages of cross reactivity with digitoxin (7.2 and 8.9% for intravenous, and 11.9 and 10.9% for oral administration), but no cross reactivity with spironolactone or its metabolites after equal intravenous or oral doses.

[Advantages of blood gas analyses of an improved ventilation bronchoscope (author's transl)].

During bronchoscopy in elder patients the development of respiratory acidosis is a hazard. A new and improved ventilation bronchoscope decreases the risk, which was demonstrated by blood gas analyses. This bronchoscope differs from those normally used in the following ways: 1. An inflatable cuff on the outer tube seals the bronchoscope like a breathing tube against the trachea. 2. This bronchoscope, although in the endobronchial position, improves the ventilation of the contraleateral lung aided by wider side holes lying above the bifurcation. 3. Jet-ventilation can be employed.

[An improved bronchoscope (author's transl)].

This bronchoscope differs from those normally used in the following ways: 1. In the endobronchial position the bronchoscope makes possible improvement in ventilation of the contralateral lung by increasing the area of the side-openings above the bifurcation. - 2. An inflatable cuff on the outer tube seals the bronchoscope against the trachea like a breathing tube. - 3. Jet-ventilation van be employed when the bronchoscope is open.

[Early diagnosis of neoplasms].

Cancer is a generic term for a variant manifestation of life caused by genetic mutations of somatic cells. It is not only carcinogenesis which is basically a genetic phenomenon, but also tumor progression which can be influenced by various genetic factors. A group of tumors is known to be inherited in a Mendelian fashion. In addition a great number of single gene disorders is associated with the development of maligne tumors. The further study of these diseases will allow new insights into the fundamental mechanisms leading to clinical cancer. In this respect a series of immunodeficiency diseases is of particular interest. Several organ tumors which seem to occur more frequently in relatives of tumor patients are of practical importance. A more sophisticated classification of these tumors may illuminate their genetic behavior. The geneticist cannot only define groups of individuals with a high cancer risk, but he can identify genetic, e.g. chromosomal, aberrations of cancerous cells which enables him the early detection of neoplasia.

[X-ray studies in the early diagnosis of stomach cancer].

The work was undertaken to find out by means of serial roentgenological investigations of the stomach in specially high cancer risk age groups whether it is possible, using the mentioned method, to improve the results of early diagnosis of gastric cancer. Also, the following problems were discussed: reliability of the method in question for recognition of the early forms of gastric cancer, the rate of precision of the used technic, the possibility to employ the method as wide-scale search test.

[The use of photon absorptiometry in renal osteodystrophy (author's transl)].

In 58 patients with end-stage renal failure before commencement of regular hemodialyses treatment (RTD) and 58 patients under RTD bone mineral content (BMC) was determined by the use of the photon absorptiometry. Further the effect of a treatment with bitamin D3 and 5,6-trans-25-OH-vitamin D3 on BMC was studied. There existed a negative correlation between the duration of chronic renal failure or of RDT as well as of the serum parathyroid hormone level to BMC. No correlation was found between BMC and serum calcium level. During a 14 months-course treatment with vitamin D3 or 5,6-trans-25-OH-vitamin D3 BMC increased. The method of photon absorptiometry presented itself as an easy and well reproducible technique for routine examinations.
