Under atherogenic diet in the pig changes of the intima developed in predisposed places of the arteries which have close relations to the atherogenesis in man. 4 months after the end of a 4-month atherogenic diet no decisive regression of lipid infiltrates could be established in spontaneous thickenings of the intima, however, signs of a lipid mobilisation.

Utilisation of ribonucleosides as precursors of DNA biosynthesis was studied in germinating wheat embryos because the reductive pathway leading to deoxyribonucleotides is very difficult to demonstrate in extracts of higher plants in vitro. [5-3H]Cytidine and [6-3H]uridine are incorporated into wheat DNA (RNA-free) via ribonucleotide reduction without intermediate scission of the glycosidic bond. This reaction is observed at 20-30 h after the onset of germination only in aged (2-4-year-old) seeds while the embryos isolated from fresh grains show very little cytidine incorporation; in contrast, thymidine incorporation into DNA between 10 and 18 h of germination is not age dependent. Fresh wheat contains a soluble, heat-stable inhibitor fraction, most probably a modified oligonucleotide, which efficiently prevents cytidine incorporation when added to old embryos together with the labeled nucleoside. This material also inhibits purified Escherichia coli ribonucleotide reductase and is thought to be part of the control system for ribonucleotide reduction in wheat; it may gradually decay during storage of the seeds. Dry wheat embryos do not contain deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates. Pool sizes of dATP and dTTP in germinating embryos were found to reach 1 pmol/microgram DNA at 10-15 h of germination (i.e. before ribonucleotide reduction) and were independent of the age of seeds. These data suggest that wheat contains other preformed dexoyribonucleoside derivatives which are phosphorylated at an early time and can initially sustain DNA synthesis. Induction of measurable ribonucleotide reductase activity in fresh winter wheat was for the first time accomplished by 15 days of vernalization of the seeds at +2 degrees C.
Cephamandol 6.0 g, cephazolin 6.0 g or cephacetrile or cephalothin 8.0 g were administered as short-term infusions on 3 consecutive days to informed volunteers, who had no history or evidence of impairment of renal function. There were 15 subjects in the cephamandol, cephacetrile and cephalothin groups and 14 subjects in the cephazolin group. Alanine-aminopeptidase, a characteristic tubule enzyme, was determined in a 24-hour urine 2 days before administration, during the 3 day administration and on the 4 subsequent days. In addition, alanine-aminopeptidase was also estimated immunologically in concentrated urine with the aid of an anti-brush border antibody. Cephamandol, cephazolin and cephalothin were completely without effect on the proximal tubule. Cephacetrile, on the other hand, showed clear reactions in 9 out of 15 subjects, in the form of elevated AAP activity in urine and in 6 of the cases membrane elimination was demonstrable immunologically. After withdrawal of the medication, the values of the responder group returned spontaneously to normal, i.e. no cumulative effect was detected. These investigations show that elimination of alanine-aminopeptidase in the urine is a very sensitive index of the action of cephalosporins on renal tubules.
In skin neoplasms (so-called keratoakanthomas, papillomas, and squamous cell carcinomas) of Mastomys natalensis (GRA Giessen) virus particles and viral antigens were demonstrated in distinct epithelial layers. Nuclei of the upper parts of the stratum granulosum and disintegrated cell parts of the stratum corneum contain viral structures. The localization of virus particles and viral antigens in any skin neoplasms of M. natalensis (GRA Giessen) corresponded to the sites where papillomavirus-specific material had been demonstrated in papillomas of other species.
The results of parallel determinations of digoxin in the sera of non selected patients (n = 104) by enzyme immunoassay (EMIT-EIA) and radioimmunoassay (J-125 labeled RIA) were compared with each other. The determinations revealed considerably different concentrations; the values determined by EIA were statistical lower (for EIA 1.09 +/- 0.99 ng/ml, for RIA 1.34 +/- 1.01 ng/ml, p less than 0.01). In sera with hemolysis and in sera of patients with hyperlipidemia and uremia false-negative results were found by EIA. After elimination of these sera an exact concordation of the values of both the methods was obtained (for EIA 1.12 +/- 1.01 ng/ml, for RIA 1.12 +/- 1.02 ng/ml, r = 0.95).

A virus (MnPV) with the structural characteristics of papilloma viruses was isolated from benign and malignant proliferations of adult animals of the inbred line 'GRA Giessen' of Mastomys natalensis. The particles can be banded in CsCl gradients at densities of 1.34 g/ml (full particles) and 1.29 g/ml (empty particles). The virus DNA has a buoyant density of 1.7104 g/ml and can exist in three different conformations (supercoiled circular, nicked circular and linear), the sedimentation values of which have been determined as 23 to 24S, 16 to 17S and 14 to 15S, respectively. Although the mol. wt. of MnPV DNA is similar to that of HPV 1 DNA, the size of the fragments obtained after cleavage of MnPV DNA with the restriction endonuclease Hae III is quite different from the pattern seen with human papilloma virus. The virion contains 12 different polypeptides; the major structural protein has a mol. wt. of 56 000. MnPV is shown to be the causative agent of the skin proliferations, because tumours can be induced by inoculation of purified virus, whereas no cutaneous alterations are observed when the particles are inoculated in the presence of anti-MnPV serum. MnPV can be re-isolated from the experimentally induced tumours.

In 30 patients ageing from 19-60 years dueing forced mask-ventilation, the pressures present in the epipharynx and the middle ear were measured. In 12 patients results raising pressure of the middle ear which has a corresponding level in the epipharynx accompanied by a time delay. It was possible to measure peaks in pressure of 100 cm H2O which however, by increased forced ventilation could produce higher results. Disturbances of the movable structures of the middle ear, due to increased forced ventilation appears probable.
In the light of three years of experience with intra-ossal implants, the author deals with the indication and the material to be used. The significance of the patient's psychological state in establishing the indication is emphasized. Chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloys are considered to be suited as implants. The author discussed the results from 16 cases where blade implants according to Linkow had been used.
