The development of the intramural nerve plexus of the gastro-intestinal tract.

The chicken intestinal tract from the 6th day of breeding until the 20th day after hatching was examined histochemically for acetylcholinesterase activity. The enzyme was detected first in the perikarya and subsequently also in the ganglion-cells processes. The appearance of the acetylcholinesterase reaction deposit was observed first in the stomach and duodenum and later in the rectum. The histogenetic development of the intramural plexus in the small gut proceeds caudad, but in the colon in the opposite way, i.e., craniad. In the duodenum and colon the nervous development is complete in chicken embryos of 11-12 days and in the rest of the small intestine in embryos of 13-14 days of breeding. In the human embryo of 60 mm CRL the development of the intramural plexus is already completed.

[Esophageal function after fundoplication (Nissen)].

Manometric, pH-metric, radiological and histological examinations were performed in 15 of 18 consecutive patients with gastro-esophageal reflux before and after fundoplication. In 13 of these 15 patients, reflux symptoms largely or completely disappeared after the operation. In the successfully operated patients, the reflux provocation test markedly improved but lower esophageal sphincter pressure did not rise. Six successfully operated patients in whom hiatus hernia was present after the operation and 7 patients without hernia had similar esophageal function tests. Therefore, success of surgery does not depend on resting pressure and position of the lower esophageal sphincter.

[Radiotherapy of 4468 uterine carcinomas].

The treatment results of 3847 carcinomas of the cervix and of 621 carcinomas of the uterine corpus during a period from 1928 to 1966 are reported in a statistical review. The constancy of the absolute recovery rate of carcinomas comprising fifty per cent within all stages and different time intervals is supposed to be due to early standardization and multiple fractionation of the radiation therapy maintained without essential modifications. The recovery rate of carcinomas of the corpus was found amounting to 61 per cent altogether, remaining also unchanged, though, between cases with carcinomas solely irradiated (43%) and woman who were surgically treated before irradiation (87%) the difference of efficiency rates was increasing with the years.

[Enzyme kinetic determination of glucose (author's transl)].

A reaction kinetic method is described for the determination of glucose in biological fluids. Glucose is oxidized to gluconic acid and NAD is reduced to NADH in the presence of glucose dehydrogenase. The rate of formation of NADH is followed in a LKB Reaction-Rate-Meter. Together with the analogue read-out, the rate of reaction is determined with a newly developed kinetic calculator. The specifications of the calculator are given. The new method has the advantage of a high rate of throughput and good reproducibility.

Restriction of immunoglobulin heterogeneity, autoimmunity and serum protein levels in aged people.

Ninety-one sera of persons above 80 years of age were screened for autoantibody activity against lipoproteins (anti-LDL 7, anti-HDL 6 positive), for rheumatoid factor activity (Latex 14, Waaler-Rose 7 positive) and for antinuclear factors (11 positive). Among the sera with autoantibody activity 29 percent showed deviations of the normal kappa/lambda ratio of immunoglobulins, as opposed to 22 percent of the sera without detected autoantibody activity. In 3 percent of the sera an M component was detected. Determination of the alpha1-acid glycoprotein, alpha1-antitrypsin, haptoglobin, haemopexin, complement component C3c and C4, IgG, IgA and IgM levels showed significant increases in alpha-, and beta-globulins as well as in IgG and IgA in sera of the aged persons as compared to a normal population between 20 and 60 years old. No significant difference was noted between the gamma-globulin concentration in sera of aged persons with or without autoantibody activity. The evaluation of the relationship between serum protein levels and alterations of the kappa/lambda ratio indicated that the alpha- and the beta-globulins were significantly raised in sera with altered kappa/lambda ratios, whereas, with the exception of M component containing sera the gamma-globulin levels seemed not significantly affected by changes in this ratio.

[Lymphography in testicular tumors (author's transl)].

Results of lymphography in 101 cases of testicular tumor are described. Secondaries could be shown in 43% of seminomas and 46% of teratomas. Examples show the criteria of lymphographic diagnosis of secondaries. Lymphography permits a) more exact classification of stages b) better planning and control of treatment and c) prognosis.
