The frequency of malignant neoplasms was studied in 248 psoriatics treated with a single, weekly, oral dose of methotrexate ranging from 5 to 25 mg. The follow-up period ranged from 5 to 14 years with a median of 7 years. The following 10 malignant neoplasms were found: ovarian cancer 3, breast cancer 2, esophageal cancer in 1 male, pancreatic cancer in 1 female, malignant lymphoma in 1 female and 1 male and 1 squamous cell carcinoma of the scrotal skin. As the observed number of malignant neoplasms was considerably smaller than the expected number, it is concluded that methotrexate therapy as used in the treatment of psoriasis does not seem to contribute to the development of malignant neoplasms.
The problems in the evaluation of children with suspected infravesical obstruction are shortly reviewed. Based upon literature studies it is concluded, that an isolated urinary flow measurement determining the Qmax is a suitable procedure of screening. Due to different shortcomings of earlier published normal materials, we investigated the spontaneous urination of 205 normal children aged 3 to 13 years in their normal environment. The mictiograph was installed in the toilet of two kindergartens and one school, enabling the children freely to void into the machine upon desire. From the flow curves the following parameters were calculated: Q1 sec, Qmax, Qmax time, and the micturition time, all of them being related to the square root of the voided volume. The data were non-parametrically statistically processed, and the limits of normal values (2 1/2% and 97 1/2% percentiles) are defined for different groups of age and sex. Furthermore, the different flow curve patterns are described, and it is found, that in 90% of the cases they are identical to the adult pattern.

The density of aerobic bacteria in the subcutaneous wound was quantified by the velvet pad rinse technique before (first stage) and after (second stage) opening of the bladder in 13 patients undergoing transvesical prostatectomy. Six patients had bacteria in the urine preoperatively (group A) and the same bacteria were isolated from bladder puncture during the operation and during second stage. Seven patients (group B) had sterile urine preoperatively and the bacteria isolated during first and second stage were commensals of the skin and the upper-respiratory tract. The bacterial density in group B was median 3.1 viable counts (v.c.) x 10(-1)/cm2 during first stage rising to median 4.7 v.c. x 10-1/cm2 during second stage, while group A showed an increase from median 4.3 v.c. x 10(-1)/cm2 during first stage to median 169,5 v.c. x 10(-1)/cm2 during second stage. The results of the study indicate the possibility of using selective antibiotic prophylaxis, with the relevant antibiotic for the bacteria isolated in the urine preoperatively, to reduce postoperative wound infection in urological surgery with opening of the urinary bladder.

Cholesterol crystals treated with an aqueous solution of sodium oleate give rise to cylindrical lamellar associations which appear under the microscope as rapidly growing tubes. Myelin forms are also obtained with other membrane sterols (desmosterol, cholestanol, 7-dehydrocholesterol) but not with lanosterol, a metabolic precursor of cholesterol, nor with the catabolic products of cholesterol (coprosterol, cholecalciferol, pregnenolone). The structural requirements for obtaining myelin tubes from sterols and sodium oleate closely agree with the results obtained by studying sterol-lecithin associations using other experimental techniques (unimolecular films at the air/water interface and permeability of liposomes), association of sterols with an erythrocyte protein and cholesterol liquid crystals.

The inactivation rates of coxsackievirus B3 (CB3) and B5 (CB5) by chlorine in dilute buffer at pH 6 were very nearly the same and about half that of poliovirus (Mahoney) under similar conditions. Purified CB3, like the poliovirus, aggregated in the acid range but not at pH 7 and above. Purified CB5 aggregated rapidly at all pH values; still, the graph of log surviving infectivity versus time was a straight line. No chlorine inactivation data were obtained with dispersed CB5, for it could be dispersed only by addition of diethylaminoethyl dextran, which would react with the chlorine. Addition of 0.1 M NaCl to the buffer at pH 6 did not influence the aggregation of CB5 or the rate of chlorine action on either of the coxsackie-viruses, but at pH 10 it increased the disinfection activity of OCl- for both viruses roughly 20-fold. Cesium chloride had a similar but smaller effect. KCl was the most active of the three in this respect, making the inactivating effect of OCl- at pH 10 about equal to that of HOCl at pH 6.
