The nucleic acid and proteins of epizootic haemorrhagic disease virus.

Purified epizootic haemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) was shown to contain 10 double-stranded RNA segments and a double-layered protein capsid with 4 major and 4 minor polypeptides. The virus differed from bluetongue virus (BTV), the orbivirus prototype, in that EHDV had an additional minor polypeptide component. This component, together with the major polypeptides P2 and P5, formed the outer capsid layer of the virus. The extra polypeptide apparently stabilizes this layer since, unlike BTV, EHDV was quite stable on CsCl gradients at both pH 7,0 and 8,0. EHD virions were found to have a density of 1,36 g/microliter, while particles without the outer capsid layer were isolated and had a density of 1,40 g/microliter. Two non-capsid polypeptides, P5A and P6A, were identified in addition to the 8 capsid polypeptides. Polypeptide P5A was synthesized in excess of all the others. There was little homology between the nucleic acids of EHDV and BTV with only 5-10% cross-hybridization. No hybrid double-stranded RNA segments were identified. We found by cross-immune precipitation that the major core polypeptides of the 2 viruses (P7 and P3) have common antigenic determinants.

[Spontaneous hyphaema in the senium (author's transl)].

Two case reports are given of "spontaneous" hyphaema in the anterior chamber of eye of two elderly women-patients. Haemorrhages as well per diapedesin as per rhexin, possibly by biotropic influence of weather, or possibly also a reflux into Schlemm's canal, too, are discussed for aetiology. There are no pathological laboratory findings.

[Acute psychosis after cyclopentolate-HCL (Zyklolat) (author's transl)].

Symptoms of poisoning were noticed in a eight-year-old boy after prescribed application of cyclopentolate 1 per cent (as declared by manufacturing firm). Acute psychosis disappeared spontaneous 3,5 hours later. Pharmacological analysis of the eye-drops showed that concentration of active agent wasn't 1 per cent but 1.31 per cent.

[Unusual retention cyst of lower lid (author's transl)].

A 70-year-old woman presented with an unusual retention cyst of right lowerlid border. Histological findings: epiderm cyst of atheroma type. There is no relapse after operation. Inflammatory occlusion of Zeiss- or Meibom-sebaceous gland by saprophytic mites (Acarus siro, Demodex folliculorum) is discussed.

[Macula hole as a retinal complication of congenital malformation of optic disk and coloboma choroideae in the same eye (author's transl)].

Case report of a 24-year-old woman with combined ocular malformation: bilateral pits in the optic disc and coloboma of choroidea. Complication: macula hole in the colobom-eye. -- Within 3 years preexistent myopia increased 2 dpt in all. Possibly combination of unphysiological retinal traction by coloboma on the one side and axial myopia on the other side is cause of macula hole.

[Acute ischemia of the optic nerve (with a color plate)].

Casuistic report of a severe bilateral ischaemia of the optic nerve (vascular optic atrophy, right eye; ischaemic oedema of the disc, left eye) of a 63-year-old woman, suffering from ulcera cruris. Tumor cerebri (for example, a classical Foster Kennedy syndrome) had to be excluded because the result of a computer tomography of the brain was 'Questionable pathologic process in the frontal lobe'. The following neurologic and neuroradiologic investigations were negative. Patient's age, extreme rise of erythrocyte sedimentation rate, dysproteinaemia, raised serum alkaline phosphatase level and aspect of the disease justified the diagnosis 'giant-cell arteritis', notwithstanding the negative histopathologic result of a biopsy of the temporal artery and regular ophthalmodynamography. Therapy was internal application of prednisolone, Cosaldon retard (later Card-Cosaldon). There was a rise of vision of the left eye to 0.4.

[Alport's syndrome (author's transl)].

A case report is given of a 22-years old student (whose brother had Alport's syndrome) with recurrent central corneal swelling and paracentral erosions of the cornea of both eyes. Further signs of beginning Alport's syndrome in this case are disturbance of re-adaptation after dazzling (Mesoptometer) and paracentral scotomata in the visual fields. Remarkable was the small diameter of the disc in both eyes (1.37 mm). Local therapy was Scopolamin-eye-drops, Actihaemyl- and especially Cystein-Gel (2.4%).

[On the aetiology of coloboma of the lens (author's transl)].

The contrast is described between two different types of coloboma of the lens: congenital and traumatic origin. The former is combined with epicanthus, unilateral coloboma of iris, retina and choroid. There seems to be a close relation between coloboma of the lens and a defect of the zonule at least during growth of lens.

[Solitary granuloma in ocular Toxocara-canis infection (Canine round worm)].

Two cases of Toxocara canis infection are reported. They presented a solitary granuloma at the posterior ocular pole. The eyes affected by parasites were practically blind. In the first case the condition was discovered accidentally on a pre-employment examination; in the second case, after a change of doctor - the previous diagnosis was toxoplasmosis. The latter mistake is very common in Toxocara infections. Our diagnoses were confirmed by Lamina's microprecipitation test. For treatment the Anthelminthinc 'Minzolum', or photocoagulation with steroid treatment can be used.

[Case report on a retinal complication in long-term-therapy with oral hormonal contraceptives (author's transl)].

An exudative retinal process was noticed in a 38-year-old woman who had taken oral hormonal contraceptives for about 8 years. An incidental finding was a fundus albipunctatus in combination with an euryblepharon. There was further a strange shading in the colour of fundus, perhaps identical with the well known Mizuophenomenon. It seems that the macula is starting point of this phenomenon (Fig. 3). Possibly exudative processes in the plexus chorioidei of brain, also are due to complications in the ZNS from contraceptives.
