Two different types of lung cancer, a squamous cell carcinoma designated as OTUK, and an undifferentiated large cell carcinoma named as T3M-10, were investigated in vitro; both produced a moderate neutrophilia in each patient. In order to analyze this phenomenon, primary cultures were performed. Epithelial cells attached and grew in both of the cultures. The conditioned medium from both tumor cells revealed high colony-stimulating-factor (CSF) activities. From T3M-10 tumor cultures, a new CSF-producing cell line has been established. T3M-10 cells have been continuously propagated during the last 28 months and produced CSF. Chromosomal analysis revealed the cell line to be a human aneuploid one with a near-diploid mode. These results indicate that the two different types of lung cancers produce CSF, which may have stimulated granulopoiesis in vivo in the patients as well.
Comparative studies using Southern blot hybridization indicated that the avirulent strains of Marek's disease virus (MDV) were probably generated through DNA rearrangement that occurred in the limited area(s) of the virulent MDV genome.

Blood pressure, critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF), salivary flow rate and pharmacokinetics were compared in 7 young healthy volunteers (average age: 22.7 years) and in 7 elderly healthy volunteers (average age: 70.6 years) after single oral doses of the antidepressants dothiepin (DP) 25 mg and amitriptyline (AMP) 25 mg. Systolic blood pressure fell further and the reduction lasted longer in the elderly than in the young after both drugs. The decrease in CFF after AMP 25 mg, and the reduction in salivary flow rate after either DP 25 mg or AMP 25 mg were larger in the elderly than in the young. Plasma levels, T1/2 and Cl of both drugs in the elderly were also higher, longer and smaller, respectively, in the elderly. Clearance was found to be reduced in the elderly. More cautions dosage regimens of these drug should be considered for elderly patients.
The subjects were 14 (7 young and 7 elderly) men. Self-rating, and physiological and psychological measurements were applied, and experiments were performed 24 h after drug administrations. 25 mg dothiepin hydrochloride (DP) decreased critical flicker frequency less than 25 mg AMP in both age groups. 25 mg DP reduced whole mouth salivary rates less than 25 mg AMP, especially in the young subjects. 25 mg DP decreased diastolic blood pressure more than 25 mg AMP. Systolic blood pressure (after 25 mg DP and 25 mg AMP) and whole mouth salivary rates (after 25 mg AMP) were affected more intensely in the elderly than in the young volunteers.

Pericardial metastases are frequently found and often cause cardiac tamponade which requires emergency treatment. Pericardiocentesis or subxiphoid pericardiotomy and pericardial drainage can be performed; the latter is a safe and effective method for the management of continuous pericardial effusion since it can be done under direct visualization and local anesthesia. We had four patients with neoplastic cardiac tamponade who were treated successfully with subxiphoid pericardiotomy and pericardial drainage. In three of them neoplasms had not been found until cytology of pericardial fluid proved to be malignant when they were attacked by cardiac tamponade. If the patient with malignancy is attacked by cardiac tamponade, subxiphoid pericardiotomy and pericardial drainage should be performed considering neoplastic cardiac tamponade. We have described pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of neoplastic cardiac tamponade.

In order to identify the specific and cross-reactive antigens to Marek's disease virus (MDV) and herpesvirus of turkeys (HVT), we prepared hybridomas producing monoclonal antibodies against these viruses. These monoclonal antibodies were screened by the indirect immunofluorescence method. The purified virus-specific antigens appeared to be more effective immunogens than unpurified virus-infected cell homogenates. Totals of 50 and 14 hybridoma clones were found to produce antibodies specific to MDV and HVT, respectively. Of these, 14 MDV clones and 5 HVT clones produced antibodies that recognized antigenic sites common to both viruses.

The effects of 1 hour, 3 hours and 10 days coronary artery reperfusion after 20 minutes, 40 minutes, 3 hours, 4 hours and 5 hours coronary artery occlusion on the contractility of myocardium was studied by the strain gauge arch, and the myocardial changes was also studied histologically. Results obtained were follows. In the short term reperfusion study: 1) Dyskinesis disappeared in all cases if reperfusion was begun after 20 minutes of ischemia. 2) Dyskinesis remained in all cases if reperfusion was begun after 40 minutes of ischemia. In the long term reperfusion study: 3) Dyskinesis disappeared in all cases after 10 days reperfusion with 3 and 4 hours ischemia groups, and the recovery of myocardial contractility was good. 4) Dyskinesis remained in 2 of 5 dogs with 5 hours coronary occulusion even after 10 days of reperfusion, and the recovery of myocardial contractility in 3 of 5 dogs with this group was poor. It is concluded that revascularization of myocardium that has been kept ischemia for less than 4 hours may lead to disappearance of dyskinesis and recovery of myocardial contractility. These findings also indicate that early coronary revascularization does not always provide an immediate recovery of dyskinesis of the revascularized area.
The present study was undertaken to establish the time limit until the beginning of reperfusion that would permit restoration of contractility in acute myocardial infarction, and to confirm the delayed recovery of dyskinesis in ischemic area followed by reperfusion. Studies were carried out in 31 dogs of which 29 had temporary (20 min to 5 hours) occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery with short or long term reperfusion, and 2 had permanent occlusion. Dyskinesis was detected with tension curve obtained using a strain gauge arch. In the short term reperfusion study, dyskinesis disappeared if reperfusion was begun within 20 min of ischemia. However, dyskinesis remained after one hour of reperfusion, if reperfusion was done after 40 min of ischemia. Reperfusion for 10 days after 3 and 4 hours of occlusion resulted in recovery of regional myocardial contractility. However in 2 of 5 animals with 5 hours of coronary occlusion, the reperfused area remained dyskinetic even after 10 days of reperfusion. It is concluded that revascularization of myocardium that had been kept ischemic for less than 4 hours may lead to disappearance of dyskinesis. These findings also indicate that early coronary revascularization doses not always provide an immediate recovery of dyskinesis of the revascularized area.
The effect of very small quantity of Ir added to pure Agb or Ab-based casting alloys on the mechanical properties were investigated by microstructure observation, tensile test, XMA (electron probe micro analysis) and electrical resistivity measurement. 1) An addition of 0.005% Ir to pure Ag caused grain refinement, increased elongation, yield point, tensile strength. However, the refinement effect did not proportionally increase to the amount of additional Ir. 2) An addition of Ir to Ag alloy containing 7% Cu caused to finely dispersed beta phase in the as cast alloy and degraded the dendrite structure. As a result, homogenization and aging were accelerated. Mechanical properties i. e. elongation, yield point and tensile strength increased in castings and homogeneous state and yield point increased in aging state. The addition of about 0.05% Ir appeared optimum. 3) An addition of Ir to an Ag alloy containing 15% Cu caused grain refinement of the alloy as cast but its effect on the mechanical properties of the alloy was not clarified owing to casting defects. 4) 0.05% Ir added to an Ag alloy containing 20% Pd and 7% Cu did not show an apparent refinement effect. The optimum quantity of Ir is assumed to differ depending on the amount of Pd content.
Subjects were exposured to two qualitatively different kind of noise (white noise and variable noise) with the same sound pressure of 90 phon for one hour as the mental stress. Changes of the function of maintaining concentration (TAF), flicker fusion (Ff), EEG and average auditory evoked response (AER) caused by this noise exposure were analyzed. The results obtained are as follows: 1) TAF-L and TAF-D of the white noise group after the exposure significantly lowered in comparison with the values before exposure, whereas in the variable noise group they tended to lower after the exposure. 2) FF of the both noise group significantly lowered after the exposure. 3) The difference in EEG before and after exposure was greater in the white noise group than in the variable noise group. 4) In analysis of variance on each frequency band of EEG during the exposure by group, a significant difference was observed between the two groups and it was noted that the exposure to white noise greatly affected the EEG. 5) The difference in N1 latency of AER before and after the exposure was greater in the white noise group than in the variable noise group. 6) In the white noise group, a significant correlation was observed between the lowering of TAF-L and the delay of N1 latency of AER. The present study on EEG and AER is further evidence of the accuracy of the function of maintaining concentration (TAF) in measuring the mental stress.
