[Age--hardening in Au-8wt%Pd alloys containing small quantities of indium (part 1) (author's transl)].

Age-hardening was produced by the additions of minor amounts of indium to a Au-Pd-base alloy for metal-ceramics, as in the Au-Pt-based ternary alloys. (1) The age-hardening, detected from the electrical resistance measurement and hardness test, increased with increasing indium contents in the Au-Pd-In ternary alloys, but was not responsible in a Au-Pd-base alloy. (2) Photomicrographs of the ternary alloys demonstrated the characteristic microstructures in the age-hardened state, but did not appear the intragranular precipitations in the as-casted and the solution-annealed state. A nodular reaction at the grain boundary was shown in the initial aging stage, subsequently the precipitations in the matrix resulted with increasing in hardness. The typical Widmannstätten's structure was developed with the over-aged stage. (3) The matrix phase in the Au-Pd-base ternary alloys containing indium was indexed by X-ray diffraction to a face-centered cubic structure. The lattice parameters were found within a=4.05 A to a=4.06 A, and then increased with indium contents. (4) The cause of the age-hardening has been implied during to the formation of intermetallic compounds, i.e. Pd-In system, but the structures can not been identified in the age-hardening state.

[Treadmill exercise testing in patients with idiopathic cardiomyopathy (author's transl)].

Multistage treadmill stress testing was performed in 24 patients with idiopathic cardiomyopathy using Bruce protocol. 5 patients were considered to have hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), 12 hypertrophic nonobstructive cardiomyopathy (HCM) and 7 congestive cardiomyopathy (CCM). Heart rate, systemic blood pressure, electrocardiographic changes and exercise tolerance were observed. The effect of propranolol on exercise tolerance was investigated in HOCM and HCM. 1) Exercise duration was less in patients with HCM and HOCM than in normal subjects (50 subjects) and greater than in 50 anginal patients. In CCM, exercise duration was the least. 2) Electrocardiographic changes observed in HCM and HOCM were increase of T waves and lessening of ST depression. In CCM, appearance of ventricular arrhythmia was noted in 4 of 7 patients. 3) Maximam exercise tolerance was reached at Bruce state III-IV in HOCM, stage III in HCM and stage II in CCM. 4) Propranolol administration resulted in improvement of exercise tolerance in 3 of 7 patients with HOCM and HCM.

Toxicity of heavy metals and insecticides on slime mold Physarum polycephalum.

Toxicity of heavy metals and insecticides on the slime mold Physarum polycephalum was investigated in order to examine and estimate with ease the toxicity of environmental and occupational contaminants and also to study the effects of various agents on the cell membrane. Changes in survival time and in membrane potential of the slime mold were measured using a double chamber method. The results obtained suggest that their toxicity for the slime mold is accompanied by some change in the cell membrane, and that studies on toxicity for various chemical substances in the slime mold can be used as a screening method.

[Aging properties of indium added gold alloys for metal-ceramic system (author's transl)].

Aging properties is studied on Au-10 wt% Pt and Au-10 wt% Pt-0.5 wt% Fe alloys containing 0.2, 0.4 and 2.0 wt% Indium. The results obtained are as follows: 1) In added Au-Pt alloys. From the electrical resistances in the isochronal aging curves, 0.2 and 0.4 wt% Indium added alloys are age-hardenable between 350 degrees and 640 degrees C. Heterogeneous phase in founded in 2.0 wt% Indium added alloy by meanes optical microstructures. This phase is identified fcc Pt3In by meanes X-ray diffraction. 2) In added Au-Pt-Fe alloys 0.2, 0.4 and 2.0 wt% Indium added alloys are age-hardenable between 250 degrees and 620 degrees C. Grain boundary reaction accelerated in 2.0 wt% Indium added alloy, and hardness decreased by overaging. Precipitation of nodule is inhibited in 0.2 wt% Indium added alloy, and aging properties also increase.

[Age-hardening of minor amounts of iron added Au-10% Pt alloy (Part II) (author's transl)].

The aging process has been studied by 0.09, 0.28 and 0.48 wt% iron added gold-10 wt% platinum alloys. The results obtained are as follows: (1) From the isochronal and isothermal aging, the electrical resistances decreased in proportion to increasing of iron. These decreases are occured to be ordered of iron and platinum. (2) The electrical resistances in the isochronal aging curves are minimized at limited temperature of 600 degrees approximately 680 degrees C, and the growth of nodules would be saturated at this temperature. (3) The apparent activation energies of aging process of Au-Pt-Fe alloys (0.09, 0.28 and 0.48 wt% Fe) were in the range of about 37 approximately 44 Kcal/mole. (4) In the results of the images atructure of nodules was lamella of fcc FePt3 phase and Au-Pt solid solution phase.
