[Indications, technique and results in treatment of hypospadias (author's transl)].

Surgical indications and results are reported in a 66 patients. The very suitable methods for distal hypospadias repair according to Hoffmann-Hall and Dettmar with their advantages are presented as a supplement to the genial method of Meyer-Burgdorff and Denis Browne. A schematic procedure is described for choosing the preferred method od operation, as illustrated by our good results.

[Problems and prospects in group psychotherapy research].

The scientific basis of psychotherapeutic findings involves a number of difficulties which are above all connected with the insufficient state of basic research in this field. In this situation, significant advances can only be expected on the basis of a systematic long-term investigation and research programme. This applies in particular to the problems of personality and efficiency diagnostics and to group process research. On the basis of some intermediate results, it is shown that by the combined and systematic use of procedures a number of possibilities for the differentiated recording of the complex processes in therapeutic groups can be obtained.

[Prevention of re-occlusion after recanalisation of occluded arteries by the catheter method (author's transl)].

In a double-blind study, prevention of re-thrombosis was tested on 101 patients in whom stenosis or segmental occlusion of a large artery of the lower limbs had been successfully removed by the intraluminal catheter method. The combination of 75 mg dipyridamol and 330 mg acetylsalicylic acid, three times daily by mouth, proved to be slightly more effective than acetylsalicylic acid alone at the same dosage. In the group with the combined treatment 84% of the arteries remained open, compared with 70% on acetylsalicylic acid alone.

[Epidemiology of duodenal ulcer (author's transl)].

The epidemiology of peptic ulcer was investigated in 1105 endoscopy patients in a Zurich city hospital and in a random nongastroenterological hospital population. A raised susceptibility for duodenal ulcer was found in young, mainly unskilled, foreign labourers. There was no raised susceptibility in female foreign workers who also suffered less often from gastric ulcer than Swiss women. A tendency to ulceration in certain other diseases previously incriminated and in alcohol and nicotine consumers was not observed. A connection between susceptibility to ulceration and migration is assumed.

[Cystic degeneration of the vessel walls. The differential diagnosis of obliterative angiopathies: (author's transl)].

Cystic degeneration of the vessel wall is a rare disease predominantly localized in the region of the popliteal artery. It appears in the frequent clinical picture of intermittent claudication. Two cases are presented. The etiology of this syndrome is not clear. The appearance of intermittent claudication, preferably in middle-aged men without risk factors is typical for an obliterative angiopathy. Angiophically there are smooth-walled stenoses or occlusions, especially of the popliteal artery, with an otherwise inconspicuous vascular system. The prognosis after surgical treatment by excision or resection is good.

[Quantification of the effects of fibrinolytic therapy upon the flow behavior of blood (author's transl)].

The effect of Streptokinase-infusion upon the flow properties of blood was investigated by viscometric and aggregometric methods. Under fibrinolytic therapy, we found in all cases a significant fall in fibrinogen content, as well as a strong reduction in plasma viscosity, velocity of red cell aggregate formation and shear resistance of red cell aggregates. In addition, a drop in apparent blood viscosity at all shear rates was found. In no case, a total desaggregation of red cell was noted. The hematocrit value remained practically constant; consequently, the drop in apparent blood viscosity at high (160 s-1) shear rates and intermediate (8 s-1) shear rates can be solely accounted for by the observed drop in plasma viscosity. At low shear rates (2.3 s-1) the observed drop in apparent viscosity is partly caused by aggregation desaggregation, but mainly by a drop in plasma viscosity. The presented results again confirm that the method of rotational viscometry only incompletely records the improvement in the flow properties of blood that are caused by a therapy aimed at a reduction of the plasma fibrinogen content.
