[Parasite fauna of Austrian owls (Strigiformes)].

During the examination of 182 owls--Asio otus (51), Strix aluco (44), Bubo bubo (34), Nyctea scandiaca (15), Athene noctua (14), Otus scops (9), Tyto alba (4), Aegolius funereus (3), Glaucidium passerinum (2), Asio flammeus (2), indigenous "owls" (4)--5 protozoan species, 3 trematode species, 1 cestode species, 6 nematode species, 3 acanthocephalan species, 2 acaride species and 7 insect species could be discovered. Dermanyssus hirundinis was proved on the Long-eared Owl and Carnus hemapterus on the Barn Owl for the first time. The infestation frequency of endo- and ectoparasites was from medium to intense on an average, whereas the infestation intensity was from small to medium. The highest rates of infestation were found at nematodes. A case of "pseudoparasitism" was detected and the significance of the analyses of stomach-contents as a guarantee of diagnosis was pointed out.

Galactose oxidase labeling of membrane proteins from human brain white matter.

The use of galactose oxidase (EC 1.1.3.9) and tritiated sodium borohydride for labeling of membrane glycoproteins, described by Gahmberg and Hakomori, has previously been applied to the study of myelin glycoproteins of experimental animals. Rat brain myelin glycoproteins have been studied by sequential lectin affinity of chromatography and recently the lectin-binding capacity of rat central nervous system myelin glycoproteins has been characterized. Complex heterogeneity of the glycoprotein pattern of rat central nervous system myelin has been reported, and so a variety of glycoproteins can be expected to exist in human white matter membranes. Application of the galactose oxidase procedure to the study of human brain membranes could be useful in research concerning certain neurological diseases if the properties of autopsy brain material are taken into account. In this study, membrane proteins of human autopsy brain white matter were subjected to the galactose oxidase/NaB3H4 labeling procedure and the membrane labeled by this method or by the [3H]acetic anhydride techniques were studied by lectin affinity chromatography using Lens culinaris phytohemagglutinin (lentil lectin) attached to Sepharose 4B beads.

Prognosis of optic neuritis with special reference to cerebrospinal fluid immunoglobulins and measles virus antibodies.

Forty-eight patients with optic neuritis (ON), first seen in 1970 to 1973, were neurologically and neuroophthalmologically reexamined after 7 to 10 years. Twenty-seven patients (56%) had probable MS, and 9 (19%) had possible MS. During the attack of ON, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples and serum/CSF measles antibody ratios were studied. Twenty patients had increased relative immunoglobulin G (IgG) (% of total protein) in their CSF; 19 of these had probable or possible MS. However, 17 of 28 patients with a normal relative IgG value had also developed MS. CSF electrophoresis was abnormal in 20 patients with ON; reexamination showed that 19 had probable or possible MS. Sixteen of 27 patients with normal electrophoresis had also developed MS. Serum/CSF measles antibody ratio had decreased in 19 patients; 13 of these had probable MS and 3 had possible MS. Of 29 patients with a normal measles antibody ratio, 14 had probable MS and 6 had possible MS. The conclusion is that examination of the CSF in ON gives valuable prognostic information because increased relative IgG, abnormal electrophoresis, or a decreased measles antibody ratio implies a high risk of developing MS. A normal CSF does not, however, rule out the possibility of dissemination.

Treatment of psoriasis with bromocriptin.

Sixty patients suffering from psoriasis of all clinical forms have been treated with an increased dosage of Bromocriptin. The age of the patients ranged from 20 to 72 years. Patients with contraindications for Bromocriptin were excluded from the test. In 80% a remission or reduction of psoriasis lesions was noticed. Side effects in the form of nausea, dizziness and vomiting occurred in 15%, but decreased in the course of Bromocriptin therapy.

Measurement of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and anti-GFAP antibodies by solid-phase radioimmunoassays.

A solid-phase radioimmunoassay was developed for the detection of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and GFAP-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies. In antibody assays purified GFAP was absorbed onto polystyrene beads, followed by incubation in dilutions of serum. (125-I)-labelled human anti-IgG was used to quantify antibodies bound to solid-phase GFAP. GFAP in samples was measured by the inhibition of the binding of anti-GFAP antibody to solid-phase GFAP. The serum and CSF samples of 19 brain tumor, 40 multiple sclerosis and 66 control patients were assayed for anti-GFAP antibodies. The binding values in the serum and CSF samples of the brain tumor patient group were higher and the binding values in the CSF samples of the multiple sclerosis group lower than those of the control group. The differences were statistically significant.

Myelin basic protein antibodies in the serum and CSF of multiple sclerosis and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis patients.

A solid-phase radioimmunoassay was developed for the detection of myelin basic protein antibodies of immunoglobulin G (IgG) class. Purified basic protein of myelin (MBP) was adsorbed onto polystyrene beads, followed by incubation in dilutions of serum or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). 125I-labelled anti-human IgG was used to quantify antibodies bound to the solid-phase. The assay was optimized in tests with rabbit antibodies to MBP and with 125I-labelled anti-rabbit IgG. Serum and CSF specimens from 41 multiple sclerosis (MS), 16 subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) and 58 control patients were tested for MBP antibodies. No statistically significant differences were found between MS and control patient groups, but the subgroup of acute MS patients had slightly elevated (P 0.02) antibody levels in their CSF specimens. The SSPE patients had markedly elevated levels (P 0.001) of antibodies to MBP in their CSF specimens.

Intermittent course of chronic goitrous autoimmune thyroiditis.

A case is reported of a woman of 30 where chronic autoimmune thyroiditis was diagnosed in 1970. The diagnosis was based on palpation, thyroid function tests and elevated titres of antibodies against thyroid constituents. She was initially treated with small doses of prednisone with complete clinical and biochemical remission which persisted also after therapy was withdrawn. In the following 10 years she had three new episodes of goitre and biochemical hypothyroidism, all responding fast and completely to small doses of prednisone. Between these episodes she had periods of several months up to 3 years with no detectable thyroid disease even when not on treatment.

The treatment of essential hirsutism in women with cyproterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol. Clinical and endocrine effects in 10 cases.

Ten women with essential hirsutism were treated for one year with cyclic administration of cyproterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol. Biochemical and clinical control took place after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months of treatment. In 4 patients great improvement of hirsutism was noted, but only after 6 months of therapy. In 4 patients there was some improvement, while 2 were resistant. Side effects included reduced libido in 4 cases, mental depression in 3, dry skin and itching in 4 and transient nausea in one, but never necessitated cessation or interruption of treatment. Several changes in endocrine function took place during treatment: testosterone secretion rate diminished together with the urinary excretion of 17-KS and 17-KGS, while the serum concentration of testosterone binding globulin increased. There was a reduction in the serum concentration of total endogenous estrogens and progesterone as well as LH. No changes in hepatic, renal or hematologic parameters were found except for a slight increase in plasma prothrombin time. Clinical outcome of therapy could not be correlated with a pretreatment endocrine "profile", nor with the changes that this therapy induced in endocrine function. It is concluded that the anti-androgenic effect is probably the most important in this drug regimen, but that reversibility of hirsutism may depend upon factors not directly related to androgen influence.

Effects of inhibitions of thromboxane synthesis on reactions of the cat bronchus in situ to prostaglandins.

Cats were anesthetized by chloralose, relaxed by suxamethonium, and ventilated. The influence of 3 inhibitors of thromboxane synthesis, N.0096 (+-alpha -benzyl-alpha-p-chlorobenzyl-4-hydroxyacetophenon phenylhydrogen-phosphonate), imidazole and dipyridamole were studied on bronchial reaction to prostaglandins E2 and F2 alpha and arachidonic acid. During a bronchoconstriction maintained by infusion of 5-HT, N.0096 and imidazole dose-dependently potentiated the intensity and duration of the bronchodilator effect of PGE2. This effect was maximal at a total dose of 17 mg/kg N.0096 or 25-50 mg/kg imidazole, but decreased after higher doses which are supposed to inhibit cyclo-oxygenase also. Bronchoconstrictor reactions to single injections of arachidonic acid were inhibited by N.0096 in the same dose range. Reactions to PGF2 alpha were unaltered by both drugs. Dipyridamole was devoid of a comparable activity.

Postmortem changes in stereological parameters of cerebral neurons.

The form and size of neurons in the cat cerebral cortex were stereologically investigated intravitally, and 30 sec., 5 hours, and 22 hours postmortem. For comparison, the human cerebral cortex of a 60 year old male subject was deep frozen 16 hours postmortem, and fixed in formalin. The stereologic parameters of the cat experiment included neuronal surface Ai, perimeter LPi, and formfactor fi. In our experiment, the neurons showed swelling and metachromasia 30 sec. postmortem, which disappeared with progressive autolysis. Postmortem neuronal swelling was attributed to circulatory disturbances in the course of fatal cardiac arrest, whereas metachromasia of nucleoli and Nissl bodies appeared together with increased lysosomal acid phosphatase activity. "Dark neurons were only found in the human cerebral cortex fixed by immersion, and are thus recognized as artefact due to fixation. The intravital occurence of "dark" neurons could not be excluded, however. Size and form determinations of the neuronal perikaryon are expected to give additional information on pathologic changes during the aging process of the human brain, especially in senile dementia and organic brain syndrome.

Representation of women in medical specialties with particular reference to Sweden.

In 1975 women held 16% of the specialist certificates held by all Swedish doctors. They were over-represented in long-term medical care, holding 56% of the certificates in this specialty, and also in psychiatry (36%), dermatology (30%), paediatrics (27%), anaesthesiology (24%), obstetrics/gynaecology (21%) and ophthalmology (20%). The reasons for the over-representation in these fields are discussed and comparisons made with the conditions in twelve other countries.

Swedish men and women doctors compared. Comparison between Swedish-trained men and women doctors for background, demographic characteristics, professional activity and motives leading to choice of medical career.

The demographic characteristics, work history, motives for taking up medicine and other features were studied in a sample of now-living Swedish doctors consisting of every fifth woman by date of birth and for every woman the man nearest to her in date of birth (943 persons). The Swedish Board of Health and Welfare supplied a large amount of the data needed; the rest were obtained from a six-page questionnaire to which 81% of the doctors replied. Analysis of these data revealed several statistically significant sex differences, including the following: The women were born to older fathers and better educated mothers. They married later, and had fewer children. They were less often engaged in in-patient somatic care and more often in in-patient psychiatric care. They were less often head doctors, less often in teaching departments and less often medical teachers; female graduates of more than 10 years' standing were less often employed in hospitals than their male counterparts. Their work output equalled 85% that of the men. More woman than men said that they were inspired to take up medicine by a sense of mission, and fewer women than men were attracted by the prospective income or the prestige attached to the profession.

[Parasites of Austrian birds of prey (Falconiformes)].

During the examination of 158 birds of prey -- Buteo buteo (85), Falco tinnunculus (30), Accipiter gentilis (19), Accipiter nisus (18), Circus aeruginosus (2), Circus pygargus (1), Pandion haliaetus (1), Pernis apivorus (1), Falco subbuteo (1) and faeces samples of Falco tinnunculus 4 protozoan species, 1 trematode species, 2 cestode species, 13 nematode species, 2 acanthocephalan species and 5 mallophaga species could be detected. In the buzzard, kestrel and goshawk a new species of Capillaria could be found and described as Eucoleus suppereri spec. nov. A new species of Synhimantus, Synhimantus (Dispharynx) falconis spec. nov. was diagnosed. The infestation frequency of endo- and ectoparasites was relatively high, whereas the infestation intensity was small or mediocre on an average. The highest rate of infestation was found with trematodes and cestodes. The significance of the analysis of crop- and stomach-cntents as a guarantee of diagnosis "psuedoparasitism" was pointed out.
