[Tendences of development of clinical pathology in pneumonology during the past 30 years in GDR (author's transl)].

During the past 50 years pneumonology changed its character from tuberculous sanatoriums to high specialized clinics for specific and non specific lung diseases. The increased bioptic and surgical activity together with a broad spectrum of different diseases needs a specialized morphologic diagnostic. The development and position of clinical pathology in the field of pneumonology in the GDR during the past 30 years is described. Tasks and importance of this relative new special part of morphology are explained and similar tendences of development in socialist countries are pointed out.

[Experimental findings after application of Kveim antigen. III. Sensitization of mice with living and killed strains of Mycobacterium avium (author's transl)].

Mice were infected with Mycobacterium avium (serotype I and serotype II). The application of kveim antigen or two kinds of lipid fractions of Mycobacterium avium (serotype I or II) is followed in all cases by typical tissue reactions resembling positive kveim tests. Control animals which only received kveim antigen or lipid fractions of mycobacterium I showed in all cases negative kveim reactions. Sensibilization of mice with killed kinds of Mycobacterium avium I or II leads after application of kveim antigen or lipid fractions (outside and inside lipids of Mycobacterium avium I and II) only in few cases to positive kveim reactions.

Transfer of adoptive immunity by intra-arterial injection of tumor-immune pig lymph node cells: treatment of recurrent urinary bladder carcinoma after radical radiotherapy.

Twenty-four patients with invasive transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder, recurrent after radiotherapy, were treated by intra-arterial infusion of tumor-immune pig lymph node cells. In 11 patients there was a remission of the disease process, and 3 patients remain alive and free of disease in excess of one year after treatment.

Adoptive immunotherapy and radiotherapy in the treatment of urinary bladder cancer.

Thirty-one patients with invasive transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder were treated either by infusion of tumour immune pig mesenteric lymph node cells into the tumour blood supply, followed 6 weeks later by 5500 rad, or by radiotherapy alone. The patients were paired prior to treatment, using 4 criteria: age (nearest decade), sex, clinical stage (T3 or T4) and histological grade (average or high). The first patient in each pair then received combined treatment and the second radiotherapy alone. Administration of pig cells before radiotherapy offered no advantage to the patient in terms of the incidence of remission or the length of survival after treatment.

[Primary lymphosarcoma of the lung (author's transl)].

The histological, histochemical and cytological changes were reported in 6 patients with primary lymphosarcoma of the lung. All cases are diffuse lymphocytic lymphosarcomas, histochemically with a similar enzymatic behaviour. Cytologically, small lymphocytes with different degrees of anaplasia were observed.

[Electron microscopical and histochemical investigations of phagocytotic defense reaction of the lung in experimental mineral oil pneumonia (author's transl)].

Phagocytosis of foreign body material (mineral oil) by alveolar macrophages and interstitial localized macrophages is seen in early stages of mineral oil pneumonia studied by electron microscopy and histochemistry. Degradation of phagocytized mineral oil by phagolysosomes is seen in alveolar macrophages, appearing in final stages as empty vacuoles. In contrast, this hydrolytic degradation cannot be found in interstitially localized macrophages. In these cells the mineral oil is present in unchanged form. It seems to be likely that this retention of foreign body material is the reason of granuloma formation. As a non-specific result of mineral oil application there is observed an increased production and extrusion of osmiophilic material (surface active phospholipids) by large alveolar epithel cells.

[Enzymehistochemical and immunopathological findings in the guinea pig lung after repeated doses of Freund's adjuvant (author's transl)].

An interstitial cell reaction was produced in guinea pigs by repeated doses of complete Freund's adjuvant. The resulting changes were investigated with enzymehistochemical and immunopathological methods. Histologically there were diffuse or focal interstitial infiltrations of histiocytes, lymphocytes, plasma cells, polymorphonuclear leucocytes and some eosinophils. Enzymehistochemically a strong activity of acid phosphatase and beta-glucuronidase is found in an increased number of alveolar macrophages, in contrast to the poor enzyme content of the interstitial cell infiltrations. Only some granulomas with starting fibrosis, visible after 6 weeks, exhibit an activity of leucine aminopeptidase and alkaline phosphatase. Immunopathologically, with the aid of anti-guinea pig-globulin, no immunoglobulins could be detected in the lungs of all animals.

[Clinical and cytological examinations on industrial workers exposed to mineraloilaerosols (author's transl)].

Clinical, roentgenological and spirometric examinations were performed on 217 industrial workers exposed to mineraloilaerosols and 197 control persons. No pathological results were to be found which could be connected with the professional employment. In both groups only in a few sputa lipid in respiratory epithelium cells was seen. We also did not find any evidence according to connection with the employment. The oilaerosolconcentrations were normaly, but during the unloading soot for a short time concentrations of anthrazeneoilaerosols up to 30 milligram per cubic meter were measured. Sputa provoced on persons with an empty stomach using aerosols of hypertonic salt solution were more effective than unprovoced sputa and sputa after meal.

[Tracheobronchopathia chondro-osteoplastica (author's transl)].

Clinical, roentgenological and histological findings in two cases of tracheobronchopathia chondroosteoplastica are described in detail. Characteristic features of this rare disorder are calcificated, cartilaginous and osseous deposits in superficially parts of tracheobronchial mucosa. The clinical picture and x-ray changes are not very characteristic. Final diagnosis is possible by bronchoscopy with histologic examination of bioptic material (excision from tracheobronchial mucosa).

[Experimental findings after application of Kveim antigen. I. Sensibilization of guinea pigs by mycobacterium avium (author's transl)].

Guinea pigs were injected intraperitoneally with different types of mycobacterium avium (serotypes 1, 2 and 3). 4 weeks later followed the injection of Kveim antigen into the foodpats. Beside a high rate of non-specific foreign body reactions in all groups, histological pictures resembling a positive Kveim test were found only in the group of animals which received Mycobacterium avium serotype 1.

The effect of sexual hormones on skin graft survival, thymic morphology and serum levels of glycoproteins and albumin in mice.

Inbred mice of the B10LP strain were injected subcutaneously over a period of 28 days with chloromadinone acetate, mestranol, both hormones together, and the carrier alone. Treatment with the gestagen chloromadinone acetate alone or in combination with mestranol caused a significant prolongation of the H-2 different skin graft survival. This was not seen after mestranol treatment alone. All the hormone-treated mice developed characteristic cysts in the thymic medulla and changes in the concentration of some plasma proteins, e.g. a fall of albumin level and a simultaneous increase of glycoprotein level. Therefore, it is necessary to look for such side-effects in humans also to prevent or to notice early alterations of immunological surveillance.

[Enzyme histochemical and immunopathological findings in intrathoracic lymph node sarcoidosis (author's transl)].

Comparative investigations on the value of modern morphological methods (enzyme-histochemistry, immunopathology) are carried out in 40 patients with intrathoracic lymph node sarcoidosis. These studies show that by means of enzyme-histochemical and immunopathological methods additional knowledge is got in comparison with routine histology, concerning especially the floridity of the disease, humoral immunity and collagen synthesis. This information is an important factor for both the clinical assessment of the process and an effective therapy.
