[Determination of Li, Na, K, Mg and Ca with a mechanised flame photometric micro-method. Mechanised micro-method ("injection method") of flame photometry (atomic absorption--atomic emission) for the determination of serum electrolytes and trace elements (Fe, Cu, Zn); Part I. (author's transl)].

By introduction of the analysis solution in measured quantities in atomic absorption and atomic emission spectrometry, the quantity sensitivity of these methods can be increased by an order of magnitude, while the concentration sensitivity remains unchanged. The required volume of sample (serum) is thereby considerably reduced. Using this method, the serum electrolytes and certain trace elements can be determined simply and quickly in only a few microlitres of serum. The automation of this micro-sample application ("injection method") largely abolishes individual errors, and markedly shortens the time for the analysis of large series of samples. The first part of this paper describes the determination of serum electrolytes and lithium, using only 5--20 microliters of serum.

[Synthesis of the human proinsulin sequence 71-86, I: Synthesis of sequence 71-86 as a monomeric cyclic biscystine peptide derivative and as its tetra-S-trityl derivative (author's transl)].

The synthesis of sequence 71-86 of human proinsulin (sequence 6-21 of human insulin A-chain) via its monomeric cyclic dicystine peptide derivative (XXII) and the corresponding tetra-S-trityl-peptide derivative (XVIII) is described. The good solubility of the derivatives (XXII, XVIII) in orgranic solvents makes it possible to purify both the derivatives in their protected form. The S-trityl derivative (XVIII) enables the synthesis of the fragment 71-86 in a scale needed for the planned synthesis of human proinsulin.

[Synthesis of the human proinsulin sequence 71-86, III: Synthesis via the fragments 71-78 and 79-86 (author's transl)].

The synthesis of the sequence 71-86 (XIII) of human proinsulin (sequence 6-21 of human insulin-A-chain) via the fragments 71-78 (XIy1,3) and 79-86 (XII) is described. The good solubility of the protected peptide derivatives belonging to the sequences 75-78 (IXx1,2), 79-86 (X), and 71-78 (XIy1,2), and of the fragment 71-86 (XIII) itself in organic solvents allows a quick and efficient purification of these derivatives by liquid chromatography on silica-gel columns.

[Determination of Fe, Cu and Zn by a mechanised micro-method of flame photometry (author's transl)].

By sample application in measured quantities ("injection method") the quality of serum required for the determination of trace elements can be considerably decreased with essentially no loss in sensitivity. The volume of solution, 50 or 100 microliters, required for a single measurement is added to the nebulizer of the AAS apparatus manually with a bulb pipette, or automatically by a suitable sample changing system. A total of 500 microliters serum is sufficient for the determination of traces of Fe, Cu, and Zn. It was shown that under suitable conditions a total volume of 25 microliters serum is sufficient for the determination of Cu and Zn by flame atomic absorption-atomic emission photometry.

[Synthesis of the fragments A1-,, A9-15 and A16-21 of ovine insulin A chain using the S-tert-butylmercapto residue for thiol protection (author's transl)].

The following paper describes the synthesis of the fragments A1-8, A9-15 and A16-21 of the ovine insulin A chain using the S-tert-butylmercapto residue for thiol protection. The synthesized fragments, which showed a good solubility in organic solvents, were partially deprotected with trifluoracetic acid and converted to the corresponding S-sulfonates quantitatively by oxidative sulfitolyses at pH 7.6.

[Synthesis of the fragments A1-8, A1-7, A9-15 and A8-15 of the chicken insulin A chain (author's transl)].

By coupling the peptide derivatives H-Cys(SBut)-Cys(SBut)-His-OMe(6-8 b) and H-Cys(SBut)-Cys(SBut)-OH(6-7b) respectively with Trt-Gly-Ile-Val-Glu(OBut)-Gln-OH(1-5a) the N-terminal sequences A1-8 and A1-7 of the chicken insulin A chain have been prepared. The sequence of A9-15 has been obtained by connecting Bpoc-Asn-Thr(But)-Cys(SBut)-OH (9-11c) and H-Ser(But)-Leu-Try(But)-Gln-OH (12-15). Acylation of the aminopeptidderivative 9-15b with Bpoc-N2H3 yielded fragment A8-15 (8-15).

[An attempt to analyze the state of gastric cancer control in the German Democratic Republic (author's transl)].

Starting from the records of the county cancer control offices, an attempt is made to analyze the quality of detection and treatment of gastric cancer in the G.D.R. Possibilities and results of curative treatment strongly depend upon the extent of the disease and the age of the patient at the time of diagnosis. During the period of observation (Berlin 1955--1974, county Königs Wusterhausen 1960--1974), the proportion of elderly patients (65-yrs.) increased, stage distribution remained about the same, the rate of curative operations increased a little. When comparing the situation in the capital Berlin with the district Erfurt, the city of Dresden and the rural county Königs Wusterhausen, it can be demonstrated that the quality of diagnosis and treatment in Berlin is somewhat better then in the other teritories.

[Breast cancer detection and treatment (author's transl)].

The records of the district offices for cancer control in Berlin and Königs Wusterhausen were used in order to analyse changes in the detection and management of female breast cancer between 1955 and 1974. The proportion of new cases younger than 45 years has increased from 8 percent to about 13 percent. Since 1970 there has been an increase in stage I and a decrease of stage IV. From 1960 to 1969 only 71 percent of all patients were radically operated upon, but in 1973/74 the proportion rose to nearly 75 percent. The tendency to extend the indication for radical surgery affects elderly women (65 to 74 years) more than younger patients. Survival rate depends on clinical stage, age and mode of treatment. It can be expected that the survival rate will increase with more radical surgery.

[Malignant neoplasms of the colon and rectum in the G.D.R. (author's transl)].

Data of the national cancer registry and the official death statistics are used to analyze the incidence and mortality of malignant neoplasms of the small intestine (ICD 152), the colon (ICD 153) and the rectum (ICD 154) in the German Democratic Republic. An apparent increase of age-adjusted incidence from 1956 to 1975 and of mortality from 1960 to 1970 can be explained by more complete reporting. A further increase of incidence from 1970 on is possible but not proved. There is no conclusive evidence that results of treatment have changed. An international comparison of incidence and mortality is difficult, since sources of information are not as reliable as generally assumed.

[Synthesis of (LysA13)bovine insulin A chain analogs as (Lys(Tfa)A13)A(SO3H)4 and Nalpha-A1-Msc-(LysA13)A(SO3H)4 derivatives using the S-tert-butylmercapto residue for thiol protection (author's transl)].

The following paper describes the synthesis of the [LysA13]bovine insulin A chain analog as [Lys(Tfa)A13]A(SO3H)4 and NalphaA1-Msc-[LysA13]A(SO3H)4 derivatives using the S-tert-butylmercapto residue for thiol protection. Although the intermediate S-tert-butylmercaptocysteinyl-peptide derivatives showed a good solubility in organic solvents the resulting fully protected A chain derivatives had a poor solubility in organic solvents and therefore were deblocked converted into the tetra(S-sulfonic acid) derivatives and purified via ionexchange chromatography.
