Expansion of services for medical students.

Increasing numbers of medical students and their rising expectations for services have often burdened the facilities of offices of student affairs. The successful utilization of professional counselors as well as personnel trained in financial aid and study skills counseling is discussed, as is a program which uses medical students as tutors and advisers of fellow students.

Contact allergy to 8-methyxypsoralen.

A 20-year-old male patient was treated topically with 8-methoxypsoralen and long-wave ultraviolet light (UV-A) for alopecia areata. He developed contact allergy to 8-methoxypsoralen after the sixth treatment (day 17), which was verified by patch testing and histopathology.

Effect of atropine and methylatropine on human vaginal blood flow, sexual arousal and climax.

No experimental data on the regulatory mechanism of the change in vaginal blood flow occurring at sexual arousal exist. Six women were in a controlled laboratory study given atropine 0.035 mg/kg intravenously. The basal vaginal blood flow was recorded by a heat probe kept at set temperature on the vaginal wall. During sexual stimulation the flow was increased as in women when no drugs are applied and orgasm was unaffected as well. The neurotransmitter has been supposed to be acetylcholine but the present experiments suggest that it is not an atropine sensitive traditional muscarinic transmission. Methylatropine was given in five subjects and neither in these cases any effect on the vaginal vascular response was observed.

Effects of VIP in the female genital tract.

Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide (VIP) has been demonstrated in the female genitourinary tract, localized in neurons which seem to innervate vessels and non-vascular smooth muscle. The present work has demonstrated that the concentration of immunoreactive VIP varies between different mammalian species and within the genital tract of the same species. Using various in vivo and in vitro preparations the peptide was found to have a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the myoelectrical activity and contractility of the uterine muscle, and to increase myometrial blood flow. The findings support the hypothesis that VIP may play a physiological role in the local control of uterine motility and blood flow.

Electrolytes in vaginal fluid during the menstrual cycle of coitally active and inactive women.

Vaginal fluid was collected on tampons self-inserted for 4 h daily during the menstrual cycles of coitally active, coitally inactive, ovulatory and non-ovulatory women. The daily hourly rate of fluid collected and its concentrations of Na+, K+, Cl- and Ca2+ were assessed. The fluid revealed a characteristic composition throughout all the menstrual cycles of 'high potassium-low sodium concentrations' compared to plasma, but no characteristic changes with the stage of the cycle. Occasional transient increases and decreases in Na+ and Cl- concentrations were observed, usually closely correlated with one another. Transient changes in K+ also occurred but these were not always correlated with other ions. In 9 cycles from 7 subjects the mean +/- s.e.m. levels (in mmol/kg fluid) of Na+ (82 +/- 4), K+ (30 +/- 2) and Cl- (79 +/- 4) in the first 7 days of the cycles were not significantly different from the Na+ (75 +/- 5), K+ (30 +/- 2) and Cl- (72 +/- 7) concentrations of the last 7 days of the cycles. This suggests that the differences in hormonal balance between the two phases of the menstrual cycle do not influence the ionic levels of vaginal fluid. The concentration of Ca2+ in 3 ovulating subjects varied between 1 and 5 mmol/kg fluid and often appeared to be inversely correlated with the amount of fluid collected.

[Electronic data processing in irradiation of gyneocological cancer (author's transl)].

For statistical processing of data resulting from irradiation of gynecological cancer a system of EDP working off-line is presented. Not only healing and survival rates will be evaluated but also data about the morbidity of irradiated patients. Thereby the employed therapy should be improved. Moreover, the patient follow-up can be supervised by a special program with automatical summoning of negligent patients.

[Synthesis of antiproteolytically active 3,5-bis(4-amidinobenzyl)- and 3,5-bis(4-amidinobenzylidene)piperidone-(4) derivatives (author's transl)].

Because of the good inhibitory effects of some alpha, alpha'-bis (amidinobenzylidene)cycloalkanoes and of their hydrogenation products on serine proteinases, the authors prepared structurally analogous bisamidines of heterocycloalkanones. To obtain 3,5-bis(4-amidinobenzyl)-N-benzoylpiperidone-(4), N-benzoylpiperidone-(4) was condensed with 4-cyanobenzaldehyde in concentrated phosphoric acid. The resultant 3,5-bis(4-cyanobenzylidene)-N-benzoylpiperidone-(4) was reduced with zinc-glacial acetic acid, and the reduction product was converted into the respective bisamidine by means of the Pinner method. 3-(4-Cyanobenzylidene)-5-(4-aminocarbonylbenzylidene)-N-benzoylpiperidone-(4) was isolated as a by-product of the condensation of N-benzoylpiperidone-(4) with 4-cyanobenzaldehyde. To prepare 3,5-bis(4-amidinobenzylidene)-N-benzoylpiperidone-(4), N-benzoylpiperidone-(4) was condensed with 4-amidinobenzaldehyde hydrochloride in concentrated phosphoric acid. The resultant bis-dihydrogen phosphate was converted into the bis-hydrochloride by treatment with methanolic hydrochloric acid solution in the cold, and debenzoylated to 3,5-bis(4-amidinobenzylidene)piperidone-(4) trihydrochloride on heating with methanolic hydrochloric acid solution.

Vaginal blood flow during sexual stimulation.

In 7 female volunteers the local vaginal blood flow was calculated from the washout of the radioactive inert gas xenon 133 after an intraepithelial injection. During rest a monoexponential washout curve was found for the whole washout process. The average vaginal blood flow (VBF) was found to be 9.8 ml.min-1. (100 g)-1 (range, 5.5 to 19.6). In 6 of the women when sexual stimulation was undertaken an increase in blood flow was recorded to an average of 28.9 ml.min-1. (100 g)-1 (range, 21.5 to 45.0).

Purification of urokinase by a beta-naphthamidine affinity column.

Urokinase was purified by affinity chromatography using 6-amino-naththamidine-(2), a new specific ligand based on the urokinase inhibitor beta-naphthamidine. Urokinase was firmly bound at pH 7.0 and could be eluted at pH 3.0. The protein which passed the column at pH 7.0 without being bound did not contain any urokinase activity. This is an important property because it can be utilized for raising a monospecific urokinase antiserum by absorbing unspecific antibodies with only a minor loss of antiserum titre.
