The response to phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) of lymphocytes from cancer patients.

The uptake of tritiated thymidine by lymphocytes from 100 cancer patients and 31 normal subjects was tested in the presence and absence of phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) in a medium containing autologous or homologous serum. Significant differences were found between normal subjects and cancer patients in both the time course and degree of uptake. Serum from normal individuals restored the response of lymphocytes from cancer patients towards normality whilst serum from other cancer patients had no effect. Serum from cancer patients impaired the response of normal lymphocytes.

Histological evidence of tumour rejection after active immunotherapy in human malignant disease.

Active immunotherapy with multiple doses of tumour homogenate incorporated in complete Freund adjuvant was used to treat 12 patients with advanced malignant disease. Evidence of some tumour destruction was observed in 10. Improvement in general clinical condition and the disappearance of symptoms referable to tumour occurred in seven of the patients. The duration of improvement varied considerably. Histological evidence of lymphocytic infiltration, necrosis, and fibrous replacement of tumour tissue is presented.

Carcinoembryonic antigen in faeces.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (C.E.A.) was detected in the faeces of 5 out of 10 healthy volunteers, 12 out of 18 patients suffering from gastrointestinal cancer (including 10 out of 11 cases of colonic cancer), and 3 out of 13 patients suffering from non-neoplastic disease. It is suggested that C.E.A. may be present in small amounts in normal faeces but that in malignant conditions of the bowel the amount increases.
