Roxithromycin in skin and soft tissue infections.

In a double blind randomised investigation in 76 patients, roxithromycin (150 mg bd) and doxycycline (200 mg once daily) were compared in two groups of patients who were well-matched for age, sex, body weight, diagnosis, duration and severity of disease and associated pathological conditions, with infected skin conditions. Clinical effectiveness was 92% for roxithromycin and 82% for doxycycline, and bacteriological effectiveness also 92% and 82% respectively, the differences not being statistically significant.

Uptake of galactose and lactose by Kluyveromyces lactis: biochemical characteristics and attempted genetical analysis.

Study of the lactose and galactose transport systems in Kluyveromyces lactis has shown that lactose uptake is by active transport. The transport system is under monogenic control and is inducible. Galactose uptake is also by active transport but the system is controlled by two genes which, in the four strains we studied, are present only in K. lactis CBS 2359. Galactose uptake in the other K. lactis strains is by a simple diffusion process.

Autoradiographic localization of beta-adrenergic receptors in rabbit eye.

Using an in vitro autoradiography, beta-adrenergic receptors were localized in the rabbit eye. Autoradiograms were generated by apposition of isotope-sensitive film to slide-mounted eye sections, labelled with [125I](-)Iodocyanopindolol. A high density of silver grains was obtained in conjunctival, corneal and ciliary process epithelium. Binding sites were also present in corneal endothelium, iris epithelium, lens epithelium, choroid and extraocular muscles. In some areas, retina was also labelled. Studies with beta-adrenergic compounds showed that the majority of beta-adrenergic receptors, detectable by autoradiography, were of the beta2 type in the rabbit eye.

The role of genes LAC1 and LAC2 in the biosynthesis of lactose metabolism enzymes by Kluyveromyces lactis.

By crossing different Kluyveromyces lactis strains, the role of genes LAC1, LAC2 and of gene C were analyzed. These genes are involved in the biosynthesis of enzymes for the metabolism of lactose and galactose. They control the biosynthesis of the lactose and galactose transport, of beta-galactosidase and of the three enzymes of the Leloir pathway. The presence of at least one of the LAC gene is required for the biosynthesis to occur. The gene C seems to code for a negative factor which blocks the expression of the LAC1 and LAC2 genes in the absence of an inducer.

[Incidence of the degeneration of cutaneous nerve tumors in Recklinghausen's disease].

A retrospective study was conducted in 85 patients with clinically certain von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis seen between 1972 and 1982. A similar study was conducted in 105 patients without neurofibromatosis observed during the same period who underwent excision of a cutaneous neurofibroma or schwannoma. Thirty-nine of the patients with neurofibromatosis never had surgical treatment for a nervous skin tumour; 46 had one or several tumours excised for diagnostic purposes or for cosmetic reasons. More than 300 tumours had been removed in these 46 patients. The post-operative follow-up period is now at least 2 years for all patients, 5 years for 85 p. 100 of them and more than 10 years for one-third. Only one case of malignant nervous skin tumour was observed in a patient who never had surgical treatment; it was a neurofibrosarcoma which resulted in death within two years. Two other deaths related to neurofibromatosis were recorded: one after surgical treatment of a duodenal schwannoma, the other due to septicaemia after infection of ulcers on a giant plexiform neurofibroma. Three other deaths unrelated to neurofibromatosis occurred. Local relapses without suspicion of malignancy were observed in 8 of the 46 surgical patients; 3 cases concerned large plexiform neurofibromas of the face; excision was histologically incomplete in most cases with or without relapse. No case of malignancy was recorded in the follow-up of the 105 patients without neurofibromatosis but with nervous skin tumours.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Effects of a new anti-allergic agent: the magnesium salt of N-acetyl-aspartyl-glutamic acid on experimental allergic inflammation of the rabbit eye.

We evaluated the efficacy of N-Acetyl-Aspartyl-Glutamic acid (magnesium salt) (NAAGA) eye-drops in preventing the conjunctival and uveal allergic inflammation induced by reverse passive Arthus reaction in the rabbit. The permeability of the blood-conjunctival and blood-aqueous barriers was investigated by the leakage of 125I-labelled rabbit serum albumin injected intravenously prior to the challenge with the antigen. Permeability of both barriers was markedly increased 2 hours after the triggering of the allergic reaction; marked edema of the conjunctiva was also observed. Pretreatment with 1, 3, 6% (w/w) NAAGA eye-drops prevented the conjunctival inflammatory changes in a dose related manner and to a lesser degree, the breakdown of the blood-aqueous barrier. The distribution of topically applied 14C-NAAGA in the rabbit eyes was also investigated.

Monoclonal antibodies to human amnion recognize different components of the rabbit eye.

The epithelium of the eye originates from embryonic ectoderm, whereas the amnion is an extra-embryonic membrane that bears close relationship with many ectodermal tissues. Shared antigens have been identified between human amnion and cornea using rabbit antisera to human amnion. Three monoclonal antibodies to human amnion, GB4, GB9, and GB11 were studied by immunofluorescence on the anterior segment of the rabbit eye. GB4 recognized the epithelium of the conjunctiva and the subcapsular epithelium of the lens. GB9 reacted only with the central four fifths of the corneal epithelium; the peripheral epithelium near the limbus was not reactive. GB11 detected the pigmented epithelial cells in ciliary processes.

[A familial case of Rothmund-Thomson syndrome. A case in favor of the uniqueness of the syndrome. Association with osteosarcoma].

A 7 years old girl with Rothmund-Thomson syndrome is described. A detailed study of the dermatologic lesions has been performed. The parent's girl are first cousins and one of her brothers, also having the Rothmund-Thomson syndrome, died from an osteosarcoma of the tibia at the age of 11. This familial observation gives support to the uniqueness of the Rothmund-Thomson syndrome with autosomal recessive inheritance.

[Plasmid resistance to antiseptics. Demonstration of methods].

Susceptibility to chlorhexidine, benzalkonium chloride and mercury chloride was studied for 70 Gram negative strains (56 Enterobacteriaceae and 14 Pseudomonas aeruginosa) recovered from humans or animals. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined on solid agar (replica plating) and in a liquid medium (laser nephelometry). For resistant strains, plasmidic mediation was looked for using conjugation. Isolation of lysates by the miniprep analytic method and physicochemical characterization of plasmids by agar electrophoresis were carried out using conjugative strains. MICs obtained using the two methods differed by one dilution at the most. Both methods yielded reproducible results. Regardless of the origin of strains, a resistant population was identified only for mercury chloride. This resistance was plasmid-mediated and transferred singly or associated with resistance to other antibiotics.

Histological, immunofluorescent, and ultrastructural features of lymphogranuloma venereum: a case report.

We studied the course of a case of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) over two years. The comparative histological, immunological, and ultrastructural studies showed the existence of characteristic granulations within the macrophages of the granuloma. We suggest that direct immunofluorescence is a specific method for diagnosing cutaneous LGV. Some ultrastructural aspects lead us to believe that different chlamydial bodies exist inside the granuloma.

Pharmacological characteristics of beta-adrenergic-sensitive adenylate cyclase in non pigmented and in pigmented cells of bovine ciliary process.

Adenylate cyclase activity was studied on the two epithelial cell types of bovine ciliary process after digestion by trypsin and purification by density gradient centrifugation. cAMP formation after isoproterenol stimulation showed that non pigmented cells were particularly enriched in adenylate cyclase activity. Furthermore pharmacological characteristics of this enzyme indicated that adenylate cyclase-associated beta adrenergic receptors were of beta 2 type in each kind of epithelial cells. These results support the hypothesis that beta adrenergic compounds modulate aqueous humor production through a direct effect on ciliary epithelium and enrichment of beta adrenergic sensitive adenylate cyclase activity in non pigmented epithelial cells suggests that these particular cells may play an important role in aqueous humor secretion.
