Isolation of an influenza A virus from seals.

Influenza A virus of serotype Hav1 Neq1 (H7N7 by the 1980 revised influenza typing system proposed by WHO experts) was repeatedly isolated from lung and brain tissues taken from harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) found suffering from pneumonia on Cape Cod Peninsula (U.S.A.) in the winter of 1979-1980. The seal isolates, although of a serotype identical to some fowl plaque virus strains, were harmless to chickens and turkeys in transmission experiments. An earlier human infection by a Hav1 Neq1 influenza virus and the serologic relatedness of this avian serotype with the equine 1 serotype are cited in support of the view that influenza viruses with these antigenic characteristics seem to have a facility to pass from birds to mammals.

Three-dimensional intraoperative stone localization.

The technique of three-dimensional intraoperative stone localization is based on the geometrical laws of stereoscopic photography. While the horizontal stone position is determined conventionally from the situation of the stone images in relation to the X-ray markers, the vertical stone position can be calculated from the diameter of the kidney, the projection distance between the double images of the concrements and the projection distance between the double images of the marker. A new small X-ray unit with a collimator attached to a tripod with counterbalance guarantees optimal intraoperative handling as well as constant X-ray exposure data and easy focusing.

[Radiation-induced sarcoma of the sixth cervical vertebra (author's transl)].

The authors report the case of a patient who suffered a sarcoma of the sixth cervical vertebra eleven years after a malpighian epithelioma of the pharynx had been treated and healed by local excision and radiotherapy. A radiation-induced sarcoma caused a tetraplegia. Laminectomy and plate fixation resulted in some recovery but the patient died three months later.

[Surgery of the larynx with fibrinous tissue glue (author's transl)].

A mucosa-muscle flap is formed by an incision on the level of the equilateral vestibular fold during an endoscopic lateral cordopexy of a paralysed vocal cord. The resulting small cavity allows parts of the arytenoid cartilage and of the vocal muscle to be removed. The mucosa-muscle flap is fixed firmly to the lateral part of the cavity by tissue glue; the mucosal incision on the vestibular fold is sealed by tissue glue too. Frontolateral partial resection of the larynx in cases of unilateral tumors of the vocal cords may be extended by additional resection of the arytenoid cartilage and the posterior part of the vocal cord. Restricted mobility of the vocal cord caused by infiltration of the tumor into the interior laryngeal muscles should be a contraindication for this operation. The resulting defect-- including the former region of the true and false vocal cords with the anterior commissure--is covered by a movable mucosa flap taken from the aryepiglottidean fold and from the entrance of the piriform sinus. The flap is fixed by tissue glue. The wound lips are sealed by tissue glue as well. A postoperative tamponade is not necessary. By using tissue glue, both operations will be done easier, quicker, safer, and last but not least more convenient for the patient.

The extent and control of avian influenza in Canada.

The large variety of influenza A virus types circulating among wild birds in their northern breeding grounds represents a menace to the Canadian poultry industry. The principal victims of avian influenza in the past were turkeys, exceptionally affected were ducks, but never chickens. Influenza in Ontario turkeys reached a peak incidence at the end of the 60's, then it declined steadily to isolated infrequent infections. The decline is attributed to efforts made to avoid contact between domestic turkeys and wild birds. The prospect of controlling avian influenza by vaccination is discounted, and it is recommended to place more emphasis on isolation of the turkeys and improved sanitation on the farms.

A Mössbauer spectroscopic investigation of the redox behaviour of the molybdenum-iron protein from Klebsiella pneumoniae nitrogenase. Mechanistic and structural implications.

The redox properties of the nitrogenase Mo-Fe protein from Klebsiella pneumoniae have been monitored by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy between -460 and -160mV (relative to the normal hydrogen electrode). Two redox processes associated with the atoms of the protein were observed. One at -216mV (pH 8.7) was associated with the Fe-Mo cofactor centres in the protein and allowed identification of the Mössbauer parameters of the oxidized form of these centres. The other redox process at -340mV (pH 8.7) was associated with species M5 [Smith & Lang (1974) Biochem. J. 137, 169-180]. This latter redox process may be involved in enzyme turnover. The oxidized form of species M5 interacts magnetically with species M4. The structural implications of the data have been considered in relation to other published data. It is concluded that an unequivocal assignment of the M4 and M5 atoms to Fe-S cluster types is not yet possible.

[An abduction applicance for congenital dislocation of the hip (author's transl)].

The appliance described consists of a shoulder belt from which an abduction bar is hanging. Two adjustable rings enclosing the thigh and the leg of the child are attached to the shoulder-belt and to the bar. The lower limb is not immobilized but kept flexes and abducted. The appliance is primarliy used for those children with minor dysplasis of the hip who do not require complete immobilization but cannot be left without any treatment. It is also useful after prolonged orthopaedic or surgical immobilization.

[Continuous monitoring of temperature in anesthesia and intensive care].

Continuous surveillance of both regional and general temperatures is of great interest in anaesthesia and intensive care. After a brief review of temperature regulation and the value of temperature control, the authors suggest a simple and reliable method of surveillance. This uses Chromel/Alumel thermocouples connected to a central device used to store the information. An experimental clinical study involved the assessment of 3 different anaesthetic protocols: Taractan-Palfium; Droleptan-Phenoperidine, Fentanyl only. These measurements were made in 30 young subjects undergoing a maxillofacial surgical procedure under identical conditions. The parameters studied were central temperature (rectal) and skin temperature of the index finger. With regard to peripheral temperature curves the results showed a first phase consisting of fall followed by a second phase characterised by a sudden increase up to a plateau. This plateau (3rd phase) persisted as long as the subject slept. The 4th phase, when peripheral temperature fell suddenly to a level sometimes lower than the initial temperature represented one of the first signs of awakening. As far as central temperature was concerned it fell in a linear fashion for all curves. Comparing the different curves obtained, the authors conclude by noting that the more vasoplegic the anaesthetic protocol, the higher the induction peak of the second phase of peripheral temperature pattern, but also that the fall in central temperature was marked. The authors feel that an anaesthetic which is biologically satisfactory and at the same time produces an overall fall in the production of heat without causing chills avoids the development of vasoconstrictor reactions between the care and the surface which are reflected by a decrease in the gradient between central and peripheral temperatures.

[Metrizamide functional myelography in cervical spondylogenic processes].

The authors present a function myelography with Amipaque (Metrizamide) as a basic condition for an optimum radiologic-morphological analysis of spondylogenous cervical syndromes. This permits a systematic use of the actual operative possibilities (modified ventral fusion procedures, dorsal compression-lowering interventions).

[Pathogenic significance of the elongated basilaris artery].

The following phenomena are discussed as pathogenetic sequelae of an elongated and deformed A. basilaris: 1. Mechanical cerebral nerve disorders and complex infratentorial vascular syndromes. 2. Impressions of the bottom of the third ventricle by the terminal basilar or stenosing of the aquaeduct by its backward angulation. 3. Induction of an active hydrocephalus. 4. Displacement of the elongated basilar by an anterior herniation in the tentorial slot. 5. Complex conditions of a hydrocephalus development from an elevation of the a. basilaris, disorders of the dynamics of the spinal fluid and a relative stenosis of the aquaeductus. The term megadolichobasilar is reserved for the arteriosclerotically elongated and deformed basilar. One should speak of a basilar deformation in case of a distinct elevation of the terminal basilar artery in relation to the dorsum sellae level without a vascular deformation.

High magnetic field Mössbauer studies of deoxymyoglobin, deoxyhemoglobin, and synthetic analogues.

Mössbauer spectra of deoxymyoglobin, deoxyhemoglobin, and the synthetic analogues, iron (II) 2-methylimidazole meso-tetraphenylporphyrin, and iron (II) 1,2-dimethylimidazole meso-tetraphenylporphyrin have been observed in high magnetic fields and over a wide range of temperature. At temperatures greater than 20 K all materials exhibit remarkably similar spectra, with anisotropic internal magnetic fields decreasing as 1/T. All have negative quadrupole interaction, and both this and the magnetic anisotropy imply that the orbital of the odd electron is prolate in the ground quintet, with little unquenched orbital angular momentum. At 4.2 K the spectra differ, suggesting different detailed structure within the quintet. In contrast to the proteins, the 2-methyl model exhibits spectra at 4.2 K which imply that the lowest spin state has high susceptibility in a single direction.

Collagenase in equine cell culture preparation.

Equine kidney cells disaggregated by treatment with 0.01% collagenase were used in the preparation of primary monolayer cell cultures. The primary cells could be stored for long periods in liquid nitrogen and subsequently subcultivated. These techniques provided a long-term supply of equine kidney cells, free of apparent contamination, from the kidneys of a single fetus.

[The Cerebral Function Monitor. Description, functioning and interpretation principles].

The Monitor of Cerebral Function enables continuous monitoring of the cerebral electrical activity and this over long periods due to the slow recording speeds. The cerebral electrical signals picked up by the electrodes attached to the scalp are registered in the form of a curve which fluctuates to a greater or lesser extent depending on the recording speed. The examination of the height of the curve with respect to zero and its amplitude indicates the voltage of the cerebral activity and yields information regarding polymorphism. It is thus possible to monitor variations in cerebral activity over a prolonged period during anaesthesia as well as during the revival phase with the Monitor of Cerebral Function, the electroencephalogram being reserved as an aid to precise diagnosis and for localization and close scruting of the anomalies.
