The intravenous injection of hapten-modified (picrylated) cells causes unresponsiveness. When conventional or recombinant interleukin-2 (IL-2) is also injected, strong contact sensitivity occurs. This IL-2 is effective when given 7 hr after the injection of the picrylated cells or 2 days later, but has no effect when given beforehand. It is suggested that picrylated cells given intravenously fail to induce contact sensitivity secondary to a failure of IL-2 production, and that IL-2 may be one of the second signals which converts a 'tolerogenic' stimulus into an immunogenic stimulus.
The room temperature magnetic susceptibilities of human and carp oxy- and carbonmonoxyhemoglobin solutions were measured in a 30-gauss (1 G = 10(-4) T) field with a superconducting magnetometer. To within experimental uncertainty, the susceptibility was the same for both the oxy and carbonmonoxy forms, and salt concentration did not effect it. A variety of sample preparations were used; the iron chemical state was verified by Mössbauer spectroscopy. A value of -0.580 +/- 0.010 X 10(-6) centimeter-gram-second (cgs) system was obtained for the mass susceptibility of the protein. We attribute the paramagnetism sometimes observed in oxyhemoglobin solutions to the presence of a small amount of the deoxy form.
States an approach to doing grief work with families who have had a child die of cancer and outlines a small group process which follows Erich Lindemann's themes of (1) reviewing the life of the deceased, (2) reflecting on the meanings of the deceased person's life; (3) restructuring of relationships, (4) liberating the dead person, and (5) recognizing the reality of a form of resurrection.

A nodular neuroblastoma was partially removed from the cerebellar vermis of a 15-month-old boy. Postoperative irradiation and chemotherapy were performed. More than 5 years later, re-operation revealed a mature ganglioglioma. Problems relating to the maturation of ganglionic tumors are discussed. The present case emphasizes that it is not justified to regard all neuroblastomas of the central nervous system as highly malignant neoplasms (grade IV).

The described urological table with 14" (36 cm) image intensifier represents a new concept. Instead of the conventional technique, i.e. fluoroscopy with a 9" (23 cm) image intensifier and radiography with film-screen combinations in a cassette, all X-ray diagnostic work is done with a 14" (36 cm) image intensifier and a 100 mm spot film camera. Field size of the X-ray image intensifier as well as spot film image quality are satisfactory to replace the conventional radiographic technique. The radiation exposure of patient and examiner is reduced significantly by the spot film technique. Omission of conventional radiographic technique allows reduction of table length to 100 cm instead of the conventional 140 cm. Furthermore, the new urological table facilities the anaesthesist's access to the patient.
Total body Tc-99m pyrophosphate scintigraphy was performed on 11 "ultramarathon" runners to assess the ability of nuclear medicine techniques to evaluate skeletal-muscle injury due to exercise. We found increased muscle radionuclide concentration in 90% of the runners. The pattern of muscle uptake correlated with the regions of maximum pain. The detection of exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis appeared to be best when scintigraphy was performed within 48 hr after the race, and to be almost undetectable after about a week. It was possible to differentiate muscle injury from joint and osseous abnormalities such as bone infarct or stress fracture. Although 77% of the runners had elevated serum creatine kinase MB activity, cardiac scintigraphy showed no evidence of myocardial injury.

The authors describe a case of anevrysmal cyst of the clavicle seen in a five-year-old girl. Both clinical and radiological diagnosis proved impossible. Complementary investigations did not settle the question. surgical excision was decided on. In spite of an unfavorable macroscopic aspect, histological examination determined the nature of the tumor. The authors emphasize the great value of resorting to all branches of medical investigation when dealing with bone tumors. Before affirming a good prognosis, or, on the opposite, suggesting extensive and mutilating surgery, the utmost caution is required.
