Renal transplantation and viral infections. III. Clinical and virological correlations.

Studies of the serological development after 26 renal transplants confirm the high frequency of antibody rises not only against the herpes virus group, but also against other virus groups such as measles, Coxsackie B viruses. These antibody rises correlate with febrile episodes and hepatic dysfunction in which CMV is the most often involved. However, the frequency of antibody rises against various viral antigens without any clinical event to suggest viral etiology; the lack of concomitant virus isolation (except the herpes group), as well as the ocurrence of simultaneous antibody rises against several viruses, all suggest that some of these various antibody rises observed may be related to immunological dysfunction rather than to virus infection.

Renal transplantation and viral infections. IV. A survey of herpes simplex virus excretion in relation to cellular specific immunity and humoral immunity among renal transplant recipients.

Fourteen renal transplant recipients were screened systematically for HVH virus infection, cellular and humoral HVH immunity and general cellular immunity evaluated by PHA response. This study demonstrates significant correlation between humoral and cellular responses to HVH before graft and virus isolation after graft. This virus excretion occurred simultaneously with a PHA response peak. Neither significant drops in cellular general or specific HVH immune response nor correlation between acute rejection episode and any studied parameters were observed.

Antiviral activity in sera of patients with influenza infection.

An interferon like activity was investigated in the sera of patients, very early during an Influenza A or B infection. A such substance was significantly more frequent among the patients who shed a Myxovirus Influenza than among the patients without virus isolation in the nasopharynx. The following relations are discussed : either is the interferon production merely associated without effect on the virus level? Or, on the other hand, in some cases is the rate or virus multiplication strictly directed by this interferon production? This study don't allowed to choose one of these hypothesis.

[Infantile diarrhea and rotavirus (author's transl)].

The acute and convalescent sera of 328 children with acute enteritis were checked with the bovine diarrhea virus as antigen in complement fixation test. 13% had a seroconversion. Some cases were associated with skin rashes or signs of respiratory infection.

[Virus infections in man during immunodepression (author's transl)].

The authors review virus infections observed in patients undergoing immunosuppressive treatment. The herpes virus, in particular the cytomegalovirus, are the most important cause. However, the role of the virus itself in an unfavourable course is variously assessed. The mechanism of the virus infection is discussed, whether primary infection, exogenous or endogenous re-infection. The latter seems to be the most frequent, at least in the case of the herpes viruses.

[Sensitivity and specificity of the passive hemagglutination reaction applied to titration of herpes antibodies].

52 human sera were checked for herpes virus hominis type 1 antibodies by passive hemagglutination, complement fixation, neutralization tests and plaque reduction in presence of complement. A good correlation was observed among the results obtained by the passive hemagglutination test and the plaque reduction in presence of complement. The rapidity of the indirect hemagglutination test and the sensitivity of the reaction are in favour of its routine use.

Renal transplantation and viral infections. II. Results of follow-up studies.

13 renal transplant recipeints were submitted to virological survey over a period of about 10 months following transplantation. They were compared to a group of individuals who underwent no transplantation : 7 patients on chronic hemodialysis and 10 healthy blood donors. The renal transplant recipients, showed rises in titer of antibodies against various viral antigens. Nevertheless, no other viral elimination but that of cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus was detected in them. Renal trnasplant recipients show significantly more often rises in virus antibody titers than the other individuals, when time of survey is taken into account. Some of these rises appeared to be simultaneous. Their mechanism is under debate : analysis of special cases and observation of associated immunohematological abnormalities are strongly suggesting that in some situations, rises in titer of viral antibodies may occur without infection.
