[Carcinoid tumours of the rectum (author's transl)].

In three patients aged 21 to 65 rectal polyps diagnosed at rectoscopy were removed by diathermy loop. Histology showed them to be carcinoid tumours, one of tubular type, two of mixed type. Rectal carcinoid rarely presents with typical clinical symptoms. Polyps discovered by digital examination or rectoscopy should be considered to be potentially malignant and removed in toto. The size of the tumour is of decisive prognostic importance. Tumours with a cross section over 2 cm should be treated as malignant. The histological investigation generally gives no indication of clinical prognosis or of the possibility of metastases. Despite invasive growth and despite local or distant metastases carcinoid tumours can be judged more favourably than carcinoma. The plan of treatment should be according to the clinical findings as well, and not only to histological results. Postoperative follow-up is considered imperative.

[Light- and electronmicroscopic findings in nine auto-alloplastic vascular grafts (Sparks-Mandril) (author's transl)].

Auto-alloplastic arterial prostheses with a dacron mesh of 1 or 2 layers according to Sparks were investigated by light and electron microscopy after variable times of incorporation and perfusion. At the end of the organization-period the characteristic structure of the wall is composed of three layers. The interior layer is adapted to the form of the mandril, which holds the place of the lumen, the medial layer is formed according to the inforcing dacron-mesh. With increasing duration of incorporation the granulation tissue shows somewhat less inflammatory cells and capillaries and more collagen fibres. There were some characteristic disturbances of healing only partly due to infection, which resulted in focal or total necrosis of the granulation tissue: Not all of these findings were of clinical importance. Already after a perfusion time of 10 months an atherosclerosis of variable degree was found. This atherosclerosis started from mural thrombi and showed in the electron microscope proliferations of modified smooth muscle cells. Advantages and disadvantages of the autoalloplastic arterial prostheses are discussed.

[Liver damage caused by laxatives. A contribution to the hepatotoxicity of 4,4'-(2-quinolylmethylene)-diphenol-hydrochloride].

A female patient developed a recurrent hepatitis-like liver damage after ingestion of a laxative containing 4,4'-(2-quinolyl-methylene)-diphenol-hydrochloride. After cessation of the drug the clinical picture improved. The hyperbilirubinemia decreased and the definitely elevated GOT, GPT, alkaline phosphatase and gamma-GTP became normal. Histologically hepato-cellular damage was seen with intra-hepatic cholestasis. As a cause for these symptoms, resembling those after taking oxyphenisatin-containing preparations, immunological procedures were thought responsible, such as "unpredictable hepatic drug reactions".

Noradrenaline content of the heart of the adrenal-demedullated rat.

1. The noradrenaline (NA) concentration in the "heart" (atria and right ventricle) of male rats was estimated at different periods following adrenal demedullation. For 1-3 weeks after the operation there was, in all rats, a reduction in NA content of the tissue, whereas, after somewhat longer intervals, the concentrations had returned to normal in some but not in all animals, so that the range of values was very wide.2. In order to be able to test the effect of 2-aminotetralin on the cardiac NA of animals deprived of their medulla but having normal initial NA concentrations, an interval of 6-8 months was allowed to elapse between operation and injection of the drug; at this time the effect of the drug on cardiac NA was the same in intact and demedullated animals. There is thus no reason to attribute to the adrenal medulla any supporting role in the resynthesis of cardiac NA during periods of increased sympathetic activity.3. The time course of the pronounced fall in cardiac NA after adrenal demedullation resembles the time course of sodium retention shown by Gaunt, Renzi, Gisoldi & Howie (1967) to follow this operation. It is therefore suggested that it is the change in electrolyte metabolism which is responsible for the abnormality of NA storage; both phenomena occur in demedullated but not in adrenalectomized animals.
