[Correlation of neuronal parameters of cingulate lamina V and lamina III pyramidal neurons in the rat].

The data obtained by quantitative neuromorphological investigations of pyramidal cells from the cingulate cortex of 3 month old rats gave evidence for significant statistical correlation between different parameters of lamina III- as well as lamina V-pyramids. The spine-number counted in single apical dendritic fields (EDF) was highly positive correlated to the total apical spine-sum and the some correlation existed in the basal dendritic tree; i.e. the data obtained in a basal EDF were representative for the whole basal dendritic tree, respectively. In the fully developed pyramids the parameters of the apical dendritic tree were considered to be of stronger importance for the data collected from the whole dendritic tree of the neuron. However, in more primitive pyramids the parameters of the apical and basal dendritic tree were found to be of the same significance for the data of the whole neuron. The development of the apical dendritic tree when compared with the basal one gave never positive correlations in their sum parameters. Significant correlation was obtained between the length of the dendrites and the volumes of their distribution area. In fully developed regular pyramids the statistical analysis gave evidence for a higher importance of distal parts of the dendritic tree as representative for the sum parameters, in contrast to primitive pyramids with higher significance of the perikaryon-near parts. These primitive pyramids are quite abundant in the phylogenetically older mesoarchicortical and mesoneocortical parts of the cingular cortex.

[Flow technic analysis of the pyelocalyceal system with regard to urinary calculi formation. I. Theoretical considerations].

The formation of urinary calculi is usually interpreted chemico-crystallographically. However, hydrodynamic examinations, both theoretical and experimental, show that unfavourable flow conditions in the pelvi-calyceal system may allow pathogens to remain in the appropriate zones for the length of time necessary for growth. Some light is shed on a new factor which has so far been ignored. Part I deals with theoretical considerations, while part II gives information on preliminary experiments using statistical models.

[Flow technic analysis of the pyelo-calical system with reference to the origin of urinary calculi. II. 1st experimental results].

Theoretical considerations, part I (1), gave rise to the hypothesis that hydrodynamic disturbances in the upper urinary tract could have an influence on the formation of urinary calculi. Since it is not yet practically possible to find out the course of flow purely by calculation, experimental investigations were carried out using static glass models of the renal pelvis; the results, which are presented here, indicate the problems involved and our approach.

[Sudden death from natural causes among children of preschool and school age (author's transl)].

Sudden natural death the cause of which can only be found through obduction and further examinations, is an especially dramatic event between the ages of 3 and 18, probably the healthiest period of life. The number of such fatalities recorded in the Institute for legal Medicine, Würzburg University, was 0.6% (38 cases). The three main causes of death were: first, respiratory diseases, second, pathological changes of the brain its vessels and meninges, third, heart disease. Physical stress may have contributed to the time of death in 7 of the 38 cases.

[Retinoscopy under cycloplegic and non-cycloplegic conditions in children comparison of measurements of three examiners (author's transl)].

The refractive status of 100 eyes were measured by three ophthalmologists utilizing retinoscopy under non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic conditions. The statistical analysis of the results was done by multiple regression. The retinoscopic measurements of sphere and cylinder of the three examiners show smaller differences under cycloplegic than under non-cycloplegic conditions. The largest differences in the measurements of axis were found in cases of small cylinder power. Especially in children and in patients with strabismus, the authors feel that measurements of the refractive state have to be carried out under cycloplegia.

[Nephrotoxicity of cefsulodin: experimental studies in animals (author's transl)].

Experimental investigations in wistar rats indicate that cefsulodin, a new cephalosporin antibiotic with high activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is more nephrotoxic than cephaloridine, the cephalosporin with the lowest renal tolerance up until new. Therefore, when cefsulodin is used clinically, renal function should be carefully controlled.

[Animal experiments on the nephrotoxicity, pharmacokinetics and therapeutic efficacy of dibekacin].

Nephrotoxicity, pharmacokinetics, and therapeutic efficacy of 3',4'-dideoxykanamycin (dibekacin), a semisynthetic aminoglycoside, were evaluated in rats. As with other aminoglycosides, therapy with dibekacin led to an increased urinary cell and malic-dehydrogenase excretion. The lowest dose resulting in an increased urinary cell excretion was 2.5 mg/kg/d. Serum levels of dibekacin after i.m. injection of 5 mg/kg were similar to those of other aminoglycosides. The kidneys accumulated high amounts of dibekacin, and eliminated it with a half-life of about 7 days. After repetitive dosing a distinct tendency to accumulation (highest renal concentration: 330 microgram/g) could be detected. Experimental chemotherapy of the chronic estrogen induced pyelonephritis revealed that dibekacin and sisomicin fed to significant reductions of renal bacterial counts at a dosage of 2 x 5 mg/kg/d for 7 days. A dosage of 2 x 2.5 mg/kg/d diminished the effectiveness of dibekacin distinctly, that of sisomicin only slightly.

A precision pump for simulated cardiographic studies.

A system simulating physiologic and pathologic changes in left-ventricular volume is presented. Its purpose is to provide a model to establish the accuracy of current equipment for assessing a heart's performance where the actual volume and size are measurable. The versatility of the model allows a wide range of variability of various parameters for simulation of many clinical situations.

[Quantitative examinations of stellate cell types of the regio cingularis mesoneocorticalis in comparison to the adjacent regions (mesoarchicortex and neocortex) after deafferentation in the rat].

Stellate cells of three adjacent subregions of the cingulate cortex (neocortex, mesoneocortex, mesoarchicortex) in the rat were analyzed quantitatively. The parameters of the dendritic tree and the spine distribution show some regional differences in the subregions. These results provide evidence for differences in the phylogenetical differentiation level of the subregions. For the characterization of this level dendritic parameters are more valuable than spine values. Isodendritic stellate cells without spines (I/OS)--which represent a phylogenetical older type--in the lower layers of the mesoneocortex are endowed with widely branched dendritic trees and with numerous varicosities (multisynaptic contacts). In the neocortex small, highly branched spiny stellate cells dominate in upper layers. Due to lesions of thalamic afferences to the cingulate cortex the isodendritic stellate cells without spines in the mesoneocortex show a significant decrease of synaptic contacts and of the size of pericarya and dendritic trees.

[The problem of amblyopia in subluxated lenses (author's transl)].

A re-evaluation of the incidence and development of amblyopia was carried out in 27 patients with a history of lens subluxation at pre-school age. Due to insufficiently accurate histories and the heterogeneous composition of the material it is impossible to make any valid statement regarding the critical phase of development of deprivation amblyopia. However, it appears that "form-deprivation" amblyopia may regress spontaneously up to early school age following hygienization of the optic media and if optimal spectacles or contact lenses are worn. In individual cases it has been shown that unilateral amblyopias can and should be treated (pleoptics) following hygienization of the optic media. Therefore, early surgical treatment should be considered in such cases, above all in view of the fact that complications are rare.
