Effect of thirsting on the biological half-life and organ-distribution of 3H-lysin vasopressin.

The biological half-life and organ-distribution of radiochemically pure, biologically active 3H-lysin vasopressin were determined in normally hydrated and in thirsting rats. Three-day thirsting did not vary the biological half-life of the 3H-LVP. The highest 3H-LVP uptake was observed in the neurohypophysis and adenohypophysis of the normally hydrated rats. As a result of thirsting, the accumulation of labelled vasopressin was increased in the neurohypophysis. The results permit the conclusion that the uptake of vasopressin by the neurohypophysis of rat is enhanced at the time of exocytosis and microvesicle formation induced by dehydration.

On the possible role of focal cooling of the heart in the mechanism of repetitive ventricular extra beats.

The role of myocardial foci in the mechanism of ventricular arrhythmias was studied by local cooling of the intact dog heart. At normal heart rate conduction delay in the focus is not sufficient to account for re-entry of impulses. However, a premature stimulus applied near the refractory period caused sudden prolongation of conduction giving rise to nonstimulated extra beats, arising probably as a result of re-entry. The phenomenon is presumably due to the fact that at this time a large portion of the fibres has not yet recovered excitability. With increasing size of the focus, there is increased asynchrony of recovery of excitability and premature stimuli falling later in the cycle are able to produce reentry. A negative correlation exists between cycle length and conduction delay and a positive correlation between cycle length and the coupling interval, i.e. the time interval between a premature stimulus and the first nonstimulated extra beat.

[Fractures of the tarsal navicular bone (author's transl)].

Analysing 17 cases of navicular fracture, authors divide the fracture dislocations in two groups. The importance of X-ray pictures in oblique views and the frequent occurence of simultaneous foot injuries is pointed out. On follow up examination of 13 fractures 3--8 years after injury authors observed in general severe arthritis, subjective impressions of the patients and the results of rehabilitation on the other hand were satisfactory. Their result suggest in cases of dorso-medial dislocation, in order to avoid redislocation, a wire pinning or open screw fixation or rather as an exception primary desis. In cases of lateral dislocation the fracture is not prone to redislocation therefor a conservative treatment is sufficient.

Effect of chloroquine on DNA synthesis in the skin of DLE patients.

Changes in the semiconservative and excision repair DNA synthesis were studied autoradiographically in the skin of 12 patients with discoid lupus erythematosus during Chloroquine treatment (500 mg/day for 8 weeks). The originally increased rate of the semiconservative DNA synthesis in the area of the skin lesions returned to the normal level simultaneous with clinical improvement. No effect on the excision reapir DNA synthesis could be detected.

[Discoid lupus erythematosus or lichen planus?].

A patient with atypical skin symptoms is described. The clinical symptoms as well as the histological ones showed the signs of both LE, and LP. The administration of antimalarial drugs had a good effect. The results of laboratorical examinations were such as in LP.

Immunodeficiency in hypophysectomized rats.

The response of hypophysectomized, sham-operated and non-operated female Fischer 344 and Wistar-Furth rats was compared to various antigenic stimuli. Antibody production against sheep red blood cells, skin response to dinitrochlorobenzene and the development of adjuvant arthritis after treatment with Freund's complete adjuvant were all markedly suppressed in hypophysectomized animals. Sham-operated rats responded as well as did non-operated controls. Skin graft survival was also prolonged in hypophysectomized rats when compared to controls. These results indicate that the pituitary gland plays an important role in immune reactions.
