The fate of oil and oil-dispersant mixtures in freshwater ponds.

The fate, distribution and composition of oil and oil-dispersant mixtures were studied in a series of five, lined, inground ponds containing sandy gravel sediment and mesotrophic water. Normal Wells crude oil and Corexit 9527 were added at nominal concentrations of 100 and 20 ppm, respectively, to two of the ponds, and the crude oil alone was added at 100 ppm to a third pond. The water surface, water column, the sediment, pond liner and attached biota were systemically sampled for a year. While only about 2% of the oil remained in the water column of the pond with no dispersant addition, in the pond with the dispersant, about 10% of the oil persisted in the water for several weeks. Most of the oil initially dispersed in the water returned to the water surface, then eventually sank to the sediment. Thinner surface films showed a higher dispersant content than the thicker slicks , and the thinner films had higher infrared carbonyl absorption. Final distribution calculations revealed that about 45% of the oil had degraded in the oil-dispersant-treated ponds during the one year study, while only 23% could not be accounted for in the oil pond. Changes in the oil composition during the experiment were similar in all ponds, with no evidence to suggest that the dispersant affected oil composition in any special manner.

The influence of pituitary hormones on adjuvant arthritis.

Adjuvant arthritis was induced in female Fisher rats by injecting their right hind paw with 0.1 ml Freund's complete adjuvant. The development of adjuvant arthritis was inhibited by hypophysectomy and by daily treatment of intact animals with the dopaminergic agent bromocriptine. Adjuvant arthritis developed normally if hypophysectomized or bromocriptine-suppressed animals were treated with either prolactin or growth hormone. Additional treatment with adrenocorticotropic hormone inhibited this restoration. Treatment of hypophysectomized rats with follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and thyroid-stimulating hormone had no effect. These results indicate that prolactin and/or growth hormone are necessary for the development of adjuvant arthritis, whereas adrenocorticotropic hormone has an inhibitory effect.

Differentiation of Newcastle disease virus strains by one-dimensional peptide mapping.

One-dimensional peptide mapping was used for the differentiation of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) strains. Virions were purified in one step, and digested with Staphylococcus aureus V8 protease or chymotrypsin without prior separation of their proteins. Peptides were separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and stained with Coomassie blue. This method proved to be a simple, economic and reproducible means of differentiating NDV strains.

[Case reports on the problem of atypical roentgen pictures in lung tuberculosis].

With four cases the authors are demonstrating radiographic findings showing that pulmonary tuberculosis has changed its pattern in the recent period. The reasons are analyzed by reviewing literature. Also in " nontypical " roentgenograms tuberculosis must be remembered. Even in future the x-ray picture will remain an important part of finding and identifying this disease, but bacteriological examinations by smear and culture are the essential parts of diagnosis. In cases of x-ray pictures apparently noncharacteristic intensive examinations by bronchological methods or percutaneous needle biopsy may become necessary.

Immunomodulation by bromocriptine.

Treatment of rats with the dopaminergic ergot alkaloid bromocriptine (BRC) inhibited the following immune reactions: contact sensitivity skin reaction to dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB); antibody formation to sheep red blood cells and to bacterial lipopolysaccharide; adjuvant arthritis; and experimental allergic encephalitis. Immunosuppressive doses of BRC (5 mg/kg) decreased the serum prolactin (PRL) levels from 84.8 +/- 15.9 ng/ml to 4.9 +/- 1.6 ng/ml. Further studies on DNCB contact sensitivity and on antibody formation revealed that the immunocompetence of BRC-suppressed animals could be restored by additional treatment with either prolactin (PRL) or growth hormone (GH). Treatment with adrenocorticotropic hormone antagonized the restoring effect of PRL and GH. These results suggest that BRC suppressed immunity by its inhibition of PRL, and possibly also by inhibition of GH secretion.

Pituitary hormones and contact sensitivity in rats.

Hypophysectomized (Hypo-X) rats do not develop contact sensitivity to dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). Daily treatment with prolactin or growth hormone completely restores the DNCB-reactivity of Hypo-X animals. Treatment of such animals with ACTH, FSH, LH, TSH or HCG has no restoring potential. Treatment with ACTH in addition to prolactin or growth hormone antagonizes restoration of Hypo-X rats. These experiments indicate that the pituitary gland has the potential of regulating contact sensitivity.

Regulation of immunity in rats by lactogenic and growth hormones.

Antibody formation to sheep red blood cells and the development of contact dermatitis in response to dinitrochlorobenzene are impaired in hypophysectomized (Hypo-X) rats. Rat prolactin, rat growth hormone, bovine prolactin, bovine growth hormone, human placental lactogen and human growth hormone all restored the immunological competence of Hypo-X animals. The possible mechanism of action of these hormones on immune reactions is discussed.

[Double-stranded DNA antibodies in discoid lupus erythematosus].

Antibodies to double stranded ds DNA were comparatively studied in the sera of untreated DLE patients and in the sera of the same persons after one month's chloroquine administration by a modified ELISA technique. Antibodies were found in both IgG and IgM classes. Untreated DLE patients showed a significantly higher antibody level than the healthy controls. During the chloroquine administration, the level of antibodies decreased first in the IgG class.

[A clinical trial of tiapride in neurology (author's transl)].

Results in twenty-three patients given tiapride are reported on. As an analgesic, tiapride's efficacy was questionable. In patients with delirium, sedation was not completely satisfactory; however, this may be due to the small number of patients and to the low doses given. The excellent results recorded in patients given tiapride for extrapyramidal hyperkinesia due to various etiologies are consistent with previous reports in the medical literature.

[Actinic reticuloid (author's transl)].

A 39 year old patient had suffered from a dermatitis at his neck, partly affecting the face as well, 11/2 years ago. A temporary improvement had been followed by signs of actinic reticuloid: lichenoid eruptions on the erythematous skin associated with pruritus. Patch and photo-patch tests were negative. Histology revealed innumerable capillaries and several macrophages carrying melanin, apart from so-called "Sézary-like" cells.
