Treatment of rats with tamoxifen citrate or pergolide mesylate was as effective in inhibiting antibody formation and contact sensitivity skin reactions as was hypophysectomy. The immunocompetence of tamoxifen citrate- and pergolide mesylate-suppressed animals could be fully restored by additional treatment with prolactin or growth hormone.

The role of gastric acidity in regulating the bacterium composition in the small intestine was studied. Gastric acidity was determined with the Kay test. Intestinal juice obtained by a probe was examined for the presence and number of microorganisms. Parallel with the increase in gastric acidity, the number of bacteria in the jejunal juice generally decreased. Their composition also varied: in anacid patients E. coli predominated whereas in those with free hydrochloric acid, Streptococcus alpha haemolyticus and anaerobic Peptostreptococcus formed the bulk of the microflora. These data underline the importance of the role of acidity in the development of bacterial contamination in the jejunum.
A case-control epidemiological and family study was organized of 2024 index patients born between 1970 and 1976 affected by isolated cleft lip +/- cleft palate, isolated posterior cleft palate and multiple congenital abnormalities including facial clefting and of their matched control cases. The specific rate of affected parents and sibs was 2.4% and 4.2% in the isolated cleft lip +/- cleft palate sample, while 2.2% and 3.2% in the isolated posterior cleft palate group. The proportion of polygenic liability was about 77 +/- 8% in isolated cleft lip +/- cleft palate cases. Among teratogens, the triggering impact of certain anticonvulsants was confirmed.

Clinical, experimental and post-mortem studies suggest that avascular necrosis of the femoral head following fractures of the neck of the femur, is due to compression, torsion, stretching or rupture of the blood vessels by displacement of the fragments. If this is true then urgent reduction and internal fixation are important in the prevention of this complication. This study shows that those cases which were submitted to early reduction and internal fixation had a reduced incidence in severity of avascular necrosis compared with those in whom operation was delayed. Therefore it is proposed that fractures of the femoral neck should be treated by early reduction and internal fixation.
A preliminary investigation was made of data of intelligence quotient, dementia quotients, objective profile analysis of MAWI (Hungarian standardized version of WAIS) in patients suffering from multi infarct, primary degenerative and alcoholic dementia (MID, PDD, Alc. D). Homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) were measured in lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with presenile dementia and senile dementia of Alzheimer's type (PDAT and SDAT) and multi infarct dementia. They were compared to controls and to each other. Alcoholic dementia can be differentiated from other types of dementia mainly by the values of verbal and practical quotients (VQ/PQ), Hewson Index 5 and by the objective profile analysis. MID can hardly be differentiated from PDD, but the objective profile analysis can help, mainly subtests 1 and 3 of MAWI. No decrease was found in the concentrations of HVA and 5-HIAA in lumbar CSF of demented patients compared to controls, but there was an elevation in 5-HIAA concentration.
The effect on the immune response of the MtT/W5 (W5), MtT/W10 (W10) tumors of Wistar-Furth rats and of MtT/F4 (F4) tumor transplantable in Fischer 344 rats was examined. Antibody response to sheep red blood cells and contact sensitivity reactions to dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) were used as immune parameters. In intact rats the W5 tumor suppressed the antibody response as much as did hypophysectomy (Hypox). The antibody response of Hypox rats was marginally improved by this tumor. Contact sensitivity was not suppressed in intact animals and the poor reactivity of Hypox rats was reconstituted to normal levels by W5. Treatment with bromocriptine (BRC) had no influence on tumor growth or on the immune reactivity of tumor-bearing hosts. The W10 tumor suppressed antibody formation, but not contact sensitivity in intact animals; the antibody and the DNCB response of Hypox animals was reconstituted partially, by this tumor. BRC treatment of tumor-bearing animals mimicked the effect of Hypox in this system. The F4 tumor suppressed antibody formation in intact rats and did not reconstitute the reactivity of Hypox rats. The DNCB response was not influenced by this tumor in intact animals and it was partially reconstituted in Hypox rats. Again, the reactivity of BRC-treated animals was similar to that of Hypox tumor-bearing animals. These results indicate that pituitary tumors may alter the immune reactivity of their hosts significantly.

Oil and oil-dispersant mixtures were added to the surface waters of a series of man-made ponds. The fate of the oil and dispersant (Norman Wells crude and Corexit 9527 respectively) were studied as well as the impact of the added chemicals on the ponds' ecosystems. Elements of the ecosystems studied include bacteria, fungi, phytoplankton, periphyton , proto- and mesozooplankton , zoobenthos and surface insects. In addition a number of water quality parameters were regularly monitored. Comparisons were made between oil-treated and control ponds, as well as oil-dispersant treated and oil and/or control ponds. This paper describes the experimental set up and provides a summary of the findings reported in the following five papers.
