["Firesetting caused by homesickness"].

This account of one of the now rare cases of fire-raising through homesickness brings into clear relief what is peculiar to the abnormal development of the fire-raiser's personality, the abnormal pattern of subjective experience and the abnormal motivation of the criminal act.

[Clinical trial of contemnol tablets (lithium retard Spofa)].

A report on the clinical testing of the lithium-retard medicament Contemnol (Spofa). It details the way lithium-retard treatment is objectively and subjectively superior to the earlier and still current general lithium treatment.

Characterization of human platelet basic protein, a precursor form of low-affinity platelet factor 4 and beta-thromboglobulin.

Platelet basic protein (PBP) was purified from the supernatant of thrombin-stimulated, washed human platelets by ion-exchange, affinity, molecular sieve, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The NH2-terminal amino acid sequence was determined by automated Edman degradation, revealing 9 unique residues followed by 10 residues of the established low-affinity platelet factor 4/beta-thromboglobulin (LA-PF4/beta TG) sequence. Among the nine were three basic residues, accounting for the high isoelectric point of PBP. Additional evidence for precursor status includes the immunological cross-reactivity of all three species and the ability of plasmin and trypsin to produce from PBP a species resembling beta TG in charge, hydrophobicity, and size. Tryptic peptide maps of PBP and LA-PF4 obtained by reverse-phase HPLC were very similar, and from each protein, a peptide was isolated which showed the amino acid composition predicted for the COOH-terminal tryptic peptide of beta TG. Normal platelets contained predominantly LA-PF4, with PBP ranging from 10% to 30% of total beta TG antigen. This was true even when fresh platelets were lysed with trichloroacetic acid in order to provide the most complete and rapid inhibition of proteolytic activity. beta TG itself was never detected in this situation or in the release supernatant of stimulated platelets, and only rarely in unprotected lysates. In agreement with earlier results, crude preparations of PBP were mitogenic for 3T3 cells, but highly purified preparations of PBP and LA-PF4 were free of this activity.

[Psychopathology and neuro-ophthalmology in meningioma of the olfactory groove].

In 14 patients with a surgically nad histopathologically verified meningioma of the olfactory nerve groove (OGM) (12 women, 2 men), clinical findings and diagnosis were analysed, especially with respect to neuropathology and psychopathology. The apodictic theorem that an OGM leads to a Foster-Kennedy syndrome as well as to a psychopathological orbital brain syndrome cannot be maintained. The Foster-Kennedy syndrome does not occur in a characteristically high incidence, and psychopathologically an orbital brain syndrome can only be diagnosed in case of an anterior location of the OGM. The more the OGM shows starting point or growth development to or from the anterior chiasmal angle, the more is resembles that psychopathological syndrome that we have found and described for the meningioma of the Tuberculus sellae.

[Neuro-ophthalmology and psychopathology of meningiomas of the tuberculum sellae (syndrome of the anterior chiasma angle)].

Seventeen cases of meningiomas of the Tuberculum sellae (the anterior chiasma angle) are analysed according to neuro-ophthalmological and psychopathological aspects. Although they also develop in the so-called suprasellar space, they are not characterised by heteronymous bitemporal hemianopsia, but it is in most cases the primary, bilateral optic atrophy that is predominant. Six of 17 cases showed--as the case reported by E. Lange in 1963 ("hysterical" amaurosis)--psychopathological initial and leading symptoms and with these a psychopathological complex which is called a medio-basal hypothalamic-limbic brain-localised psychosyndrome.

[Effect of music on depressed patients].

The effects of the performance of various forms of music and an acoustic non-musical comparative stimulus on the condition and efficiency of depressive persons were studied. These persons react in the mot uniform manner to the performance of Vienna waltzes and slow phrases of piano concertos by Mozart, partly with considerable improvements of their condition and increase in efficiency while contrary reactions were produced by other forms of music. Persons suffering from depressive defect schizophrenia with reduced drive showed positive effects after waltz music and folksongs. The results are encouraging to include suitable music under group therapeutic conditions in the complex psychiatric therapy rehabilitation strategy.

[Morphology of coronaviruses-- electron microscopic demonstration by negative contrast technic of the transmissible gastroenteritis virus of swine].

This contribution to the morphology of corona virus is based on the use of electron microscopy in a negative contrast investigation of the virus of transmissible gastroenteritis of swine. Viruses of transmissible gastro-enteritis are spherical or, in rare cases, pleomorphous particles of typical corona virus structure. The viruses investigated by the authors were 132 nm in diameter. The surface projections, consisting of a flattened knob and conical shaft, are 18 nm in length. Internal bodies, 50 +/- 2 nm in diameter, occur as "filled" or "empty" particles. The thickness of all internal bodies and virus membranes is 8 +/- 1 nm. Differences were found to exist between virus of transmissible gastro-enteritis and particles similar to corona virus and isolated from faecal samples. A first comparison had been made for that purpose. Those differences were relating to shape and size of individual particles and to morphological setup of surface projections.

[Peculiarities and difficulties in the systematic drug therapy of chronic schizophrenics (schizophrenic "defect")].

Difficulties are discussed that have occurred in the medicamentous treatment of chronic patients with a so-called schizophrenic defect. The main problem was that in case of a greater drive-increasing effect component of the drug (in the concrete case "Defecton") a recrudescence of productive-schizophrenic symptoms may occur in connection with the increase in drive. The authors' own opinion (Lange) with respect to a treatening "defect", psychopathological radical of the chronic schizophrenic residual condition ("defect"), personality-dependent syndrome structure with secondary symptoms, iaterogenisation and institutiogenisation of the "defect" ("institution artefact") is discussed.

Human platelet basic protein associated with antiheparin and mitogenic activities: purification and partial characterization.

Platelet basic protein (PBP) (isoelectric point, 10.0-10.5; apparent Mr, 11,000-15,000) has been purified to homogeneity from material secreted by fresh human platelets after stimulation by thrombin. The purification, using preparative isoelectric focusing and chromatography on heparin-Sepharose, yielded two additional peptides with antiheparin activity that were immunologically identical with PBP: low-affinity platelet factor 4 and beta-thromboglubulin. The purity of the peptides was confirmed by immuoelectrophoresis and by NH2-terminal amino acid analysis. Dansyl chloride-treated PBP yielded a single dansylated amino acid residue (glycine). By using a specific radioimmunoassay it was shown that 10(9) human platelets contain 2-3 microgram of PBP which can be released in response to specific stimulation. PBP is associated with mitogenic activity as assayed in Swiss 3T3 mouse cells cultured in low-serum (0.4-1.5%) medium at levels of about 1 ng/ml and saturating at 10-40 ng/ml. The biological activity of different PBP preparations was variable, presumably due to inhibition by the varying amounts of ampholytes that interfered with the mitogenic activity of the peptide. Mitogenic activity was eluted from NaDodSO4/polyacrylamide gels and shown to comigrate with immunoreactive material and with conventional marker proteins of 14,000-17,000 daltons or with histones of 11,000-15,000 daltons. Evidence is presented that PBP is different from cationic platelet-derived growth factor which has an apparent Mr of 30,000.
