[Psychopathology and criminal personality changes in patients with frontal lobe injuries].

Proceeding from H. Cosack (1937), and in view of the fact that since then no further casuistic contributions relating to the crimogenic aspect of the psychopathological frontal brain syndrome or to the forensic psychiatry of persons with frontal brain damage have appeared, we take up the discussion with five of our own cases. Since modern procedures have made it possible to localise exactly the consequences of brain damage, a new round of investigations might be expected to resolve the problems still left open.

[Is there a "temporal psychosyndrome (Landolt)"?].

With reference to features of two cases of grave traumatic temporal cerebral injury, where a "temporal psychosyndrome" as defined by Landolt was not ascertainable, the question is raised whether, apart from temporal-lobe epilepsy, such a syndrome really exists. Computed tomography offers an enhanced objective basis for an investigation embracing an extensive patient population.

[Parent, mother or father loss in childhood and suicidal behavior in adulthood].

Information respecting loss of one or both parents in childhood was elicited at certain fixed intervals among 170 suicides and 200 each of attempted suicide cases, and hospitalised neurological and ophthalomological patients. It was discovered that among the cases of suicide and attempted suicide, cases where one or both parents were lost in childhood were 2 1/2 to 4 times more frequent than in the control groups. Especially notable is the high frequency of cases where the father was the lost parent.

We exemplify the transition of the motive from heightened SELBSTWERTERLEBEN through FREUDE UND ALLGEMEINE LUST in fire to (pre)sexual motivation. The individual features of these 18 cases are noted and distinguished, and the conclusions reached in the expert testimony set out.

[Results of the use of lithium to prevent recurrence of affective psychosis].

The efficacy of lithium treatment in preventing relapse in phasal psychoses was tested by the re-examination of 99 patients at a Dresden clinic whose treatment had on average exceeded ten years. Results and progress were compared with those of patients starting treatment since the introduction of the lithium treatment in the year 1979. Phase or subphase frequency and duration, conditions of treatment, suicide attempts, unfitness for work, and registration as a disabled person were among the aspects considered.

[Arson and (para-) suicide].

There have been forensic-psychiatric observations from 1963 to 1983 concerning the offenders responsibility in case of deliberate arson with 12 out of 147 suits being closely related to (para-)suicide. According the variety of relations we distinguish between fire as pure means of suicide, fire used to take along the living space or people, suicide committed in consequence of arson, furthermore arson as a symbolic suicide, and finally acting alternately with both arson as well as parasuicide.
