12 patients with Wilson's disease were examined by means of renal biopsy. In 9 of these patients a slight (4 patients) or a strong proteinuria (5 patients) appeared during the therapy with D-penicillamine. A biopsy was performed in 3 patients before the beginning of the therapy with D-penicillamine. The patients with severe proteinuria showed the largest immunohistological changes (partly distinct immune complex nephritis with epimembranous IgG- and complement-(C3-) depositions -- electronoptically membranous glomerulonephritis. In rebiopsy after a stoppage of the medicament of 1 year only a slight tendency to improvement was to be recognized.
The oversimplifying and scientifically untenable separation of suicide (successful) and attempted suicide (unsuccessful) was overcome by Stengel's fundamental findings that only very few attempted suicides are failed suicides, and that the majority of attempted suicides are acts a qualitatively distinct character. Psycho(patho)dynamic analyses of suicidal acts disclosed that in a portion of the suicide attempts there is no or at least no determined suicidal intent. The definition of 'suicidal attempt' which has come into general use is therefore imprecise, because in many cases suicide is not "attempted" but the technique of suicidal behaviour is only used for a primary non-suicidal purpose. A differential typology of the entire content of the concept of 'suicide attempt' which includes vague non-homogeneous matters has become unavoidable and is being discussed here. In the suicidal behaviour of children the problems become even clearer. The 'suicide attempt' in children does not meet Stengel's criteria. The great majority of cases are not 'attempted' suicides, do not show a final determination, do not come about in a calculated manner, and are not based on an ambivalence about life and death, but are rather a potentially fatal substitution by suicidal behaviour for a demonstrative appeal for help, for a resigned escape signal or for an impulsive cry. Neither can one recognize the development of the pre-suicidal syndrome described by Ringel.
Address to mark the 15th anniversary of the "Rodewisch theses" adopted during the 1st International Symposium on Psychiatric Rehabilitation of the European socialist countries in 1963. The author deals with the events leading up to the Symposium and its importance. An analysis is made of how the essential theses of development are being put into practice. Challenges facing psychiatry in future are outlined.
The psychotropic preparations developed and introduced in recent years are discussed in the form of a synoptical paper. The information given mainly concentrates on the attempts to find antidepressants without cardiotoxic side-effects, psychoneuroleptics without extrapyramidal side-effects and long-acting or depot preparations. The survey is restricted to psychotropics in a narrow sense (with an antipsychotic action) and to preparations that are produced in the GDR or imported or made available for the clinical testing of which the reporting clinic (Dresden) was in charge.
Elevated histamine concentrations of pathophysiological significance could be determined in plasma of dogs suffering from acute pancreatitis according to Pfeffer. This result was also obtained in dogs treated with aminoguanidine, a very effective diamine oxidase blocker, in addition to the duodenal blind loop preparation. Elevated histamine concentrations were found in nine out of ten dogs.

Histamine release could be shown in 50% of the dogs suffering from acute haemorrhagic pancreatitis in Pfeffer's preparation. The survival time of these dogs was shorter by about 50% than that of animals without alteration of the plasma histamine levels. The powerful diamine oxidase blocker aminoguanidine diminished the incidence of severe pancreatitis in the dogs without influencing survival time. As in animals treated by saline histamine release could be shown in 50% of the aminoguanidine-treated dogs in which higher plasma histamine levels were determined than in saline-treated animals. The survival time of the dogs with histamine release, however, was not different from that of animals with normal plasma histamine levels throughtout the experiment. The actions of aminoguanidine in Pfeffer's preparation seemed to be rather complex. Contrasting effects on the development of pancreatitis and on histamine inactivation may have influenced the survival time in different directions.
The 3H-leucine incorporation in proteins of incretory organs of the mouse, the exocrine pancreas, and the renal tubuli was studied autoradiographically after administration of therapylike doses of the neuroleptic drug Haloperidol. With exception of the pancreas, a dosage of dependent increase of the 3H-leucine incorporation was observed in the treated animals. In our opinion, the results reveal an activation of the hypothalamus-hypophysis-adrenocortical system due to a 10-days administration of Haloperidol. These results are in conformity with former ones in brain and liver.

A cerebellopontine angle tumor cannot be reliably diagnosed from a classical clinicotopographic cerebellopontine angle syndrome. There is also a vascular cerebellopontine angle syndrome which is not too rare an occurrence. In some cases of tumorigenesis, where there is no papilledema and no characteristic increase in total liqour protein, it is not possible to make a clear decision between tumorous growth and vascular syndrome. The extension of the internal auditory meatus cannot be considered to be a symptom clearly indicating the presence of a tumor.
Several strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were investigated for pathogenicity to plant tissue. Inoculations into the intercellular spaces of leaves of Vicia faba (28 degrees C) and Vinca rosea (36 degrees C) showed negative results. In leaves of Nicotiana tabacum (32 degrees C) the bacteria multiplied; the tissue reacted to form partial lesions and necrosis. Neither in culture filtrates of the bacteria nor in eluates of inoculated leaves pectolytic and cellulolytic enzymes or breakdown products of these could be obtained. Whilst the proteolytic activity was high, symptoms for effects on the plant tissue, however, were not observed. Although this bacterium may be able to multiply after injection into tobacco leaf, the general question about pathogenicity to plants must be denied.
