[Preservation capability of horse semen by the use of two diluents and preservation temperatures].

The effect of a skim milk extender and a glycine-containing extender on sperm motility and acrosome morphology of stallion semen was examined. There was no difference concerning acrosome morphology. After 24 hours of preservation motility of the ejaculates diluted with glycine extender was significantly superior to those handled with skim milk extender. Storage at 5 degrees C in all cases gave better results than storage at room temperature. Skim milk extender is an appropriate diluent when the semen is used for al on the day of its collection, whereas the glycine-containing extender offers the possibility to maintain sperm viability beyond 24 hours up to 72 hours.

Animals↗

[Poisoning with a wood preservative].

Autopsy findings and the results of chemical-toxicological analysis are presented on a case of suicide with a wood preservative containing potassium fluoride. The highest amounts of fluoride were found in kidney and urine; there was no increase of fluorides amount in the brain. The analysis was done by colorimetry after micro-diffusion.

Cause of Death↗

[Fatal diltiazem poisoning].

The diagnosis at postmortem examination and the results of the chemical analysis in a case of a diltiazem intoxication are presented. Two metabolites were identified as desacetyldiltiazem and N-desmethyldiltiazem.

Alcoholism↗

[Suicide with sodium azide].

A case report is presented of the suicide of a 27-year-old female laboratory assistant by means of sodium azide. Simple colorimetric and volumetric methods are present to detect and estimate the salt.

[Computer-assisted identification of basic substances].

The potential applications of a personal computer with integrated database software in toxicologic analysis are discussed. A toxicologic database including 370 basic compounds, is presented that was built up without knowledge of a higher programming language and was used as a base for drug identification in normal analysis by PC, DC and GC.

Influence of chlorhexidine on seminal patterns in stallions.

Ejaculates were collected at 3-day intervals before, during and after a washing procedure with chlorhexidine (2%). Semen motility and pathology were determined before and after deep-freezing. Blood samples were taken before and within 1 h after washing procedures and then extracted in ether. This was followed by HPL chromatography. Chlorhexidine concentrations in blood and seminal plasma were distinctly higher in the treated stallions than in control groups. Concentrations in the control groups were below the detection limit of the column. Significant correlations between decreasing semen quality (% immotile cells, % morphological aberrations) and chlorhexidine treatment were found. A change of the present requirements for imports into North America should be considered to improve the semen quality of deep-frozen ejaculates.

[Clomethiazole poisoning].

Clomethiazol can cause addiction, it can cause misbehavior in street traffic, and overdosage can lead to death. This paper presents 18 fatal cases in which clomethiazol played an essential role. This type of intoxication can be indicated by case history, easily identifiable tablets in the stomach contents, and a characterized odor. Since clomethiazol is easy to overlook during the general chemical analysis, a special gas chromatographical investigation should be made.

[Analysis and renal excretion of pirisudanol (Stivane)].

The chromatographic and spectroscopic properties (TLC; UV; IR; 1H-NMR; GC/MS) of the psychostimulant Stivane (dimaleate;I) are presented in detail, describing some analytic peculiarities of the pure substance as well. Moreover, the results of the renal excretion studies are reported: after hydrolysis in each of the acidic and basic urine extracts a degradation product--but no unchanged drug--could be detected.
