[Radiopacity produced by the stomach contents in a case of trichlorethylene poisoning (author's transl)].

A lethal case of trichlorethylene poisoning is reported. A 50-year-old woman had drunk some 100 ml of pure trichlorethylene. The trichloracetic acid found only in traces in her urine indicated that death apparently occurred very rapidly. Furthermore, substances contained in the hair tonic "K5-Tinktur" were found in remnants of the corps in safekeeping. Skin burns around the mouth, and also on the mucous membrane of the vestibule of the mouth, were striking. The special odor during the autopsy indicated poisoning by organic solvents. The fact trichlorethylene taken orally produces an intense X-ray attenuation is mentioned with regard to the diagnosis of poisoning by halogenized hydrocarbons and to therapeutic measures. The lethal result was due to the narcotic effect of trichlorethylene.

[Detection of pentazocin (Fortral) in human urine: gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric studies].

After oral application of pentacozine (Fortral) besides the unchanged drug some further excretion products were detected by glc/ms in human urine. For their identification e.i.-and c.i.-mass-spectrometry as well as the just recently available FAB-technique were employed. All analyses were performed on a VG-Micromass 7035; the samples were introduced in the ion source via a fused silica, bonded phase capillary column (30 metres; DB-1 J + W, Inc.). The analytical profiles of the pure substance and some metabolites are reported as well as the behaviour of the pure substance on acidic hydrolyzation.

Effect of adrenergic neurotransmitters upon the ejaculatory process in the stallion.

Successful empirical treatment of 17 out of 24 stallions, which had failed to ejaculate after normal penile erection, intromission and friction, by chemical blockage of beta-receptors and additional stimulation of alpha-receptors led us to investigate stallions with normal ejaculatory patterns. In an initial experiment one adult half-bred stallion was injected with 4.88 mg noradrenaline hydrochloride (treatment A), 10 mg bunitrolol (treatment B = beta-receptor blockage) and a combination of treatment A and B. Investigations of the same stallion on dated occasions without treatment served as controls. The test criteria were heart rate during copulation by telemetric measurement, volume of ejaculates and sperm concentration per ml and per ejaculate. In a second experiment, 2 stallions were treated after a modified test schedule. In addition to the criteria used in the first experiment seminal citric acid, ergothioneine, and glycerophosphocholine were measured. Administration of the beta-blocker alone or in combination with alpha-receptor stimulation resulted in (a) significant lowering of the maximal heart rate, (b) significant increase of sperm count per ejaculate and (c) significant rise of glycerophosphocholine.

[Some experience with the enzymatic digestion of liver tissue by means of subtilisin Carlsberg (author's transl)].

According to the literature, the use of Subtilisin Carlsberg for the enzymatic digestion of tissue is supposed to yield significantly higher findings of barbiturates, alkaline substances, and benzodiazepins than traditional methods. In the case of 11 liver specimens, however, a comparison with a modified acetone method (extraction by ultrasonics) did not lead to an improvement in the results, nor did it facilitate preparation of the specimens.

Luteolysis and cycle synchronization with a new prostaglandin analog for artificial insemination in the mare.

Over a period of three years, 165 cyclic or anestrous Hanoverian mares received 177 treatments with 2, 3 or 4 mg of a novel luteolytic prostaglandin analog, K 11941. Heat and ovulations, indicating luteolysis, were observed after an average of 3.98 and 7.62 days, respectively, in 88.04% of 142 treated cyclic, postpartum and anestrous mares, and mares after an early loss of the conceptus. All doses tested were effective in inducing luteolysis as confirmed by determination of progesterone blood levels in samples collected daily, in 70 of 80 mares studied (87.5%). Attempts to achieve control of the cycle by various methods revealed that with K 11941 given once or twice, alone or in combination with hCG and/or an GnRH analog (Hoe 766), one can effectively concentrate estrus periods and follicular growth patterns, but can neither synchronize nor concentrate ovulations. Since most of the mares treated were confirmed problem mares, the pregnancy rate of 40.0% from first insemination at drug induced estrus, was regarded as satisfactory when compared to a pregnancy rate of 43.8% obtained with natural breeding in the same population. No drug related clinical signs of side-effects were observed.

[Death by hypothermia. Are there any new diagnostic aspects? (author's transl)].

The report concerns seven cases of death by undercooling which have been investigated this year. The hemorrhaging of muscles in the core of the body (m. iliopsoas) as described by Dirnhofer and Sigrist was found once, this supposedly being a "relatively specific vital sign". In every case it was possible to detect punctiform hemorrhaging of the gastric mucous membrane which according to Unterhofer is decisive when diagnosing death by hypothermia. Furthermore, it was always possible to detect higher acetone values, especially in the urine. This finding could possibly be significant for the diagnosis (death by undercooling). The acetone value is simply a secondary finding when the amount of alcohol is determined by gas chromatography.

[Determination of morphine in human hair (author's transl)].

Detectable amounts of morphine are apparently deposited in the hair of the head after long-term abuse. In 10 of 20 drug-induced deaths investigated it was possible to determine morphine values between 0.1--1 mg/100 g of hair with the appropriate preparation and application of sensitive, specific techniques. The method is suitable to prove prolonged abuse of morphine or heroin.

[Lethal intoxication by acebutolol (author's transl)].

Report on suicidal intoxication by acebutolol (prent). Thin-layer and gas chromatography as well as spectrophotometry were used to show the presence of and to determine acebutolol and its aniline derivative arising from hydrolysis in all tissues. The highest concentrations were found in urine and liver.

Centrifugation of stallion semen and its storage in large volume straws.

In a study of different methods of handling stallion semen for deep freezing, ejaculates were divided into 3 portions, the first of which was diluted 1:2 with lactose--egg yolk--glycerol diluent and frozen in pellet form. The second aliquot was centrifuged without any diluent and the third portion was initially diluted with an experimental diluent (Merck) and then centrifuged for 5 min at 1000 g. The second and third portions were frozen in large volume straws each of which contained one whole insemination dose of 1 or 2 X 10(8) progressively motile spermatozoa. The addition of a diluent to the semen before centrifugation and freezing (portion 3) resulted in an increase in sperm motility after thawing. Motility was further increased by the use of a recently developed diluent after centrifugation and before freezing. In one fertility trial, 12 of 19 mares (63%) conceived following a single insemination of frozen semen during one oestrous period.
