Comparison of agar gel immunodiffusion and fecal culture for identification of goats with paratuberculosis.

A large goat herd naturally infected with Mycobacterium paratuberculosis has been monitored for new infections for approximately 21/2 years, using both agar gel immunodiffusion and bacterial culture of feces. On the basis of postmortem confirmation of infection status, both methods had equal diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. The agar gel immunodiffusion test offered distinct advantages in ease of performance and rapidity of test results. It was concluded that serious consideration should be given to the immunodiffusion test as a diagnostic tool in control programs for caprine paratuberculosis.

Investigation of Salmonella infection in goats fed corn silage grown on land fertilized with sewage sludge.

A total of 36 goats were fed for 17 months with corn silage grown on land fertilized with human sewage sludge. These animals were investigated for salmonella infections. Salmonellae were not detected in cultures of fecal or silage samples. No significant agglutination titers were detected in goat sera examined. Salmonella newport C2 was isolated from the sludge used as fertilizer on the cornfields. The public health aspects of the findings are discussed as they relate to the increasing use of sewage sludge for agricultural fertilizers, as well as to the resultant effects on human food and livestock feed.

[Therapeutic effect of calcium chloride in myocardial hypoxia caused by acute massive hemorrhage].

It was demonstrated in experiments on 119 adult dogs that acute massive blood loss leads to the development of hemorrhagic shock with marked signs of myocardial hypoxia, especially in the late period of the pathological process. These signs are not removed by various types of transfusion therapy and are among the causes of the animals' death. Intravenous infusion of 10% calcium chloride solution following transfusion therapy leads to marked diminution of tachycardia, restoration of sinus arrhythmia, decrease of general peripheral resistance, reduction of the capacity of the venous bed, acceleration of the blood flow rate, and normalization of the central mechanisms of cardiac activity regulation. The phenomena of myocardial hypoxia disappear as a result of which the development of irreparable changes is prevented and most of the animals survive.

Virus-like particles in the opossum submandibular gland.

Numerous inclusion bodies (virus-like particles) were observed in the lumina of the intercellular canaliculi, mucous tubules and intralobular ducts of the opossum submandibular gland. The particles are spherical in outline, show an electron dense core, and are surrounded by a peripheral membrane.

Palliation of hepatic metastasis.

Between 1971 and 1975, 55 patients underwent palliative radiation therapy for symptomatic hepatic metastasis. Most patients received 2400 rad in 300 rad fractions to the entire liver. There were 31 patients who received concomitant chemotherapy, and 14 who were prior chemotherapy failures. Ninety percent of the patients with symptomatic pain and liver enlargement and significant palliation of their symptoms. The median survival of the entire group was 4.5 months, while those patients experiencing an excellent response (21) had a median survival of 9 months. The median survival of patients having an excellent response to radiation is comparable to that of patients having regional arterial chemotherapy while incuring fewer complications. The overall complication rate of those patients completing therapy (50) was 12%.

An aggressive approach to marginally resectable lung cancer.

Between July 1968 and December 1974, 53 patients with lung cancer were planned for preoperative irradiation and surgery. All patients were considered clinically marginally resectable because of advanced local disease, 4 Stage II patients, with limited pulmonary reserve and 49 Stage III patients. Most patients received 3000 to 4000 rad followed in two weeks by thoracotomy. Forty-six patients were explored and 38 were resectable. Twelve patients are alive with a median follow-up of 48 months. The cumulative 5-year survival of all resectable patients is 27%. The survival of patients with marginally resectable lung cancer treated by accelerated radiotherapy followed by aggressive surgery approaches the survival experience of patients with primary resectable lung cancer and is superior to such patients treated with radiation therapy alone.

[Effect of intravenous administration of calcium chloride on the effectiveness of infusion therapy of acute massive blood loss].

In acute experiments on 70 dogs at the late stage of the organism response to acute massive blood loss hemotransfusions, infusion of decalcinated gelatinol, or of a 0.9% solution of sodium chloride were incapable of preventing death of the animals. Intravenous infusions of a 10% calcium chloride solution following such therapy promoted survival of most of the animals.

Total intravenous feeding of calves.

Total intravenous feeding was accomplished for 5 clinically normal calves and for 1 calf with atresia coli. During the trials, which lasted 8 to 14 days (mean of 12 days), calves were not permitted to ingest any food or water. Body weight and state of hydration remained essentially constant. Plasma protein content decreased, but there were only minor changes in other physiologic measures. Calves were clinically normal at the conclusion of the trials.

[Response of the body to a combination of severe cranio-cerebral trauma and acute massive blood loss].

It was shown in acute experiments on 54 dogs that peculiarities of body reaction to the combination of a severe craniocerebral trauma with acute blood loss depended on the sequency of the extreme influences inflication. The craniocerebal trauma inflicted at the early period of hemorrhagic shock failed to influence significantly the dynamics and results of the main pathological process. Against the background of the craniocerebral trauma hemorrhagic shock appeared with a much less blood loss and its course was more severe.

[The effect of intravenous novocaine administration on the outcome of hemorrhagic reactions].

Experiments conducted on 48 dogs and 50 rabbits showed that intravenous injection of novocain at various periods of the organism reaction to acute massive hemorrhage promoted an increase of survival and of the life span of the animals. Administration of the preparation increase the rate of flow, cardiac stroke and minute volume, and, on the whole, prevented the occurrence of late period of hemorrhagic shock. A conclusion was drawn that intravenous injections of novocain delayed the rate of development of the pathological process, and thus promoted more complete mobilization of the compensatory reactions.
