Four cases of chondrodystrophy in fallow deer.

The gross and microscopic pathology in four cases of chondrodystrophy in a herd of captive fallow deer is described. The gross pathology was similar in all cases with shortening of all the bones, especially of the limbs, but at the microscopic level two distinct types of abnormality were present in the epiphyseal plates. In one type there was failure of proliferation of chondrocytes and in the other proliferation and vascularisation were irregular.

Plasma lipids and lipoproteins of some members of the order Perissodactyla.

1. The plasma lipoproteins of various members of the order Perissodactyla have been examined by electrophoresis and analytical ultracentrifugation. 2. In the Equidae, high density (alpha) lipoprotein was the major component (80-90%) and low density (beta) lipoprotein (10-20%) the minor component. 3. In the Tapiridae represented by the Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus), high density and low density lipoproteins were present in approximately equal amounts. 4. In the Rhinocerotidae, the high density lipoprotein characteristic of the Equidae and Tapiridae was absent, and the plasma lipoproteins consisted of a complex group having beta mobility on electrophoresis and a flotation pattern usually associated with low density lipoprotein. 5. The fatty acid composition of plasma lipids was remarkably similar in all members of the Perissodactyla examined, with very high percentages of linoleic acid (greater than 70%) being found in the cholesteryl esters.

Development of antibodies to meningococcal protein and lipopolysaccharide serotype antigens in healthy-carriers.

The nasopharyngeal acquisition of meningococci was followed in healthy military recruits during their primary training. The production of antibodies to meningococcal serotype protein antigens and serotype lipopolysaccharide antigens accompanied the carrier state. Bactericidal antibody to protein serotype 2 was generated in response to the carriage of meningococci of low virulence that carried this antigen.

Drugs and human memory: effects of low doses of nitrazepam and hyoscine on retention.

1 The effects of diazepam (5 mg) and hyoscine hydrobromide (0.3 mg) were assessed in two memory tasks: short-term retention of digit strings and the free recall of items from categorizable lists. 2 One hundred and two healthy subjects were tested in an independent-groups design. Subjects were assigned randomly to either placebo, diazepam or hyoscine groups. Treatments were administered orally under double-blind conditions. 3 The short-term retention of digits was impaired to an equivalent degree and locus for both drugs (P less than 0.05). This effect was ascribed to the action on primary memory. 4 The drugs produced no significant effects on the recall of categorizable lists either in terms of the number of words recalled or the cohesiveness of categorical recall. 5 These results demonstrate that drugs of different pharmacological actions produce isomorphic psychological deficits in memory and that 'anti-memory' effects on one task should not be extrapolated to all aspects of memory.

Hepatitis B outbreak among chimpanzees at the London Zoo.

Persistent carriage of hepatitis B virus in extremely high titre was identified in 5 out of 9 chimpanzees kept at the London Zoo. Antibody to this virus was present in the other 4 chimpanzees. Serological survey of the other primates in the Regent's Park collection did not reveal the presence of the surface antigen in 2 gorillas, 11 orang-utans, and 2 gibbons, although surface antibody was present in the serum of 1 gorilla and 2 orang-utans. 3 of the carrier chimpanzees were born at the Zoo and were the offspring of either a carrier mother or a carrier father, and perinatal transmission may have occurred. A strict safety code of practice was introduced and hepatitis B immunoglobulin was given at intervals to designated staff members. Sero-conversion did not occur in any of the 38 staff members under surveillance for more than 2 years. Treatment of the carrier state in the chimpanzees was attempted with human leucocyte interferon, with and without ribavirin ('Virazole'), and with adenine arabinoside, but the effects were mostly temporary.

The effects of low doses of diazepam on human performance in group administered tasks.

1. The effects of diazepam in 5 mg dosage were assessed on a range of psychological tasks. Seventy-eight healthy subjects were tested in an independent groups design; subjects were randomly assigned to either control, placebo or drug group. Treatments were administered orally under double blind conditions. 2. Auditory vigilance performance was unimpaired, in terms of (a) correct detections, (b) false alarms or (c) the subjects' estimates of the duration of the task. 3. The short term retention of digit strings was impaired by diazepam (P less than 0.05), especially for those digits presented in the middle of the sequence. 4. Searching for a few letters among many was significantly impaired by diazepam (P less than 0.01). 5. Diaepam had no effect on performance at a mental arithmetic task; neither was there a placebo effect. 6. Results were discussed in the light of the characteristics of drug sensitive tasks. It was concluded that characteristics such as feedback of results, monotony, and memory load are more likely to be drug sensitive when in combination than in isolation.

Upper respiratory tract and aural flora of saturation divers.

The conditions of helium saturation diving promote the proliferation of Gram-negative bacterial species in the external auditory meatus of divers. These changes in flora occurred in the absence of operational diving, that is, no contact with water. The colonising bacteria were autogenous in origin and cross-colonisation was observed between divers. On return to normal atmospheric conditions the aural flora became predominantly Gram-positive again within 48 hours.

The sedation and anaesthesia of birds and reptiles.

Demand for veterinary care of birds and reptiles is increasing and with it a knowledge of the current methods of restraint and sedation of these classes. Some of the safer and more practical methods are reviewed and commented on in the light of recent results from the Zoological Society of London's veterinary department.
