Senile entropion.

129 cases of senile entropion operated on by the Oculo-Plastic Service of the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital were reviewed. There was an overall success rate of 84 percent. Age, sex, race and suture material were of no importance to the eventual outcome of the surgery. A Basedown-Tarso-Conjunctival resection greater than 7 mm had 100 percent results. The orbicularis transplant with insertion at the infero-lateral border of the orbit was found to be the most effective procedure for re-operations for non-cicatricial entropion.

Mouse mammary tumor virus in hybrids from strains C57BL and GR: breeding test of backcross segregants.

F1 and F2 and first backcross hybrids and second backcross families of the high mammary tumor incidence strain GR and the low incidence strain C57BL were examined for the segregation of mouse mammary tumor viral (MMTV) expression. Although GR has been reported to transmit MMTV as a single dominant gene, several lines of evidence suggest there are multiple genetic factors that influence MMTV expression, MMTV expression as measured by double antibody radioimmunoassay for MMTV p14 segregated in 106 first backcross progeny at a 60:40 ratio, intermediate between what would be expected for either a single or two gene hypothesis. In female second backcross progeny of either male or female first backcross, a heterogeneous pattern of expression was noted that does not fit any simple Mendalian pattern. From an analysis of serial lactations of first backcross and second backcross families, it appears that all hybrid females contain MMTV proviral information that may be expressed either at late lactations or in a variable proportion of progeny mice. These combined results are most consistent with a vertically transmitted genome regulated by multiple factors in these crosses.

A continuous tumor-cell line from a human lung carcinoma with properties of type II alveolar epithelial cells.

The A549 tumor-cell line, initiated from a human alveolar cell carcinoma, has been continuously propagated in vitro for more than 3 years (more than 1,000 cell generations). These cells have a human karyotype and appear to have been derived from a single parent cell. All A549 cells examined by electron microscopy at both early and late passage levels contain multilamellar cytoplasmic inclusion bodies typical of those found in type II alveolar epithelial cells of the lung. At early and late passage levels, the cells synthesize lecithin with a high percentage of disaturated fatty acids utilizing the cytidine diphosphocholine pathway; such a pattern of phospholipid synthesis is expected for cells believed to be responsible for pulmonary surfactant synthesis. The A549 cell line should permit in vitro analysis of human surfactant synthesis and secretion and possibly provide a source of human surfactant for therapeutic intervention in pulmonary disease states characterized by surfactant deficiency.

Hypotension and bradycardia following intraocular acetylcholine injection. Report of a case.

A possible systemic reaction to acetylcholine chloride injected into the anterior chamber of the eye occurred in a 65-year-old patient who had a cataract extraction while under general anesthesia. Following cataract extraction, 20 mg of acetylcholine chloride was injected into the anterior chamber of the eye. Immediately following injection, hypotension and bradycardia (48 beats per minute) occurred.

The "lazy-T" correction of ectropion of the lower punctum.

The "lazy-T" technique consists of a surgical horizontal and vertical shortening of the involved portion of the lower eyelid. As a result of the surgical procedure, the lid margin is restored to its normal relationship with the globe. The punctum is reestablished into its normal anatomical position in the proximity of the lacrimal lake. The cosmetic blemish resulting from the surgical scar is insignificant.

Acute dacryocystic retention.

Acute dacryocystic retention is a disease of adults under 50 years old due to a noninfective foreign body blocking the nasolacrimal duct. It is characterized by the sudden onset of severe unilateral facial pain without significant localized swelling or erythema. Palpation of the involved lacrimal sac reveals slight induration and marked tenderness. Percutaneous aspiration of lacrimal sac contents, followed by probing of the nasolacrimal duct, is usually curative.

Functional intestinal obstruction due to deficiency of argyrophil neurones in the myenteric plexus. Familial syndrome presenting with short small bowel, malrotation, and pyloric hypertrophy.

In 3 infants functional intestinal obstruction, associated with a short small intestine, malrotation, and pyloric hypertrophy, was shown to be due to failure of development of the argyrophil myenteric plexus, with the absence of ongoing peristalsis. 4 infants with similar clinical features have been described previously, and there is evidence for an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance of this syndrome.

Clinical and ultrastructural correlation in congenital and acquired ptosis.

The levator superioris muscle has been studied with the light microscope and the electron microscope in congenital and acquired ptosis. Ultrastructural finding correlated closely with the clinical entities. Congenital ptosis appears to be on a myogenic basis. Acquired ptosis ultrastructurally indicates a regenerative process.

Inhibition of cyclic gonadotropin secretion by endogenous human prolactin.

The resumption of cyclic uterine bleeding reportedly accompanies the use of human prolactin (HPRL)-suppressing agents in postpill galactorrhea-amenorrhea. In this laboratory, HPRL suppression with L-dopa was variable and short lived. Basal plasma HPRL levels were elevated before and after as much as five months of therapy. Galactorrhea persisted and mean gonadotropin concentrations were subnormal. An immediate and sustained attenuation of HPRL secretion ( less than 200 per cent) followed the use of 2-Br-alpha-ergocryptine (CB-154). Cyclic gonadotropin secretion resumed and was accompanied by ovulation and, in one instance, pregnancy. The cessation of galactorrhea was positively correlated with the rise in the daily concentration of 17 beta-estradiol. Cyclic postovulatory menstruation continued after the cessation of CB-154 treatment. HPRL levels remained normal. The daily patterns of human follicle-stimulating hormone (HFSH) and human tuteinizing hormone (HLH) secretion created by the suppression of HPRL displayed an inherent rhythmicity identical to that observed at the time of menarche. The inhibitory effects of HPRL appeared directed at cyclic rather than tonic gonadotropin secretion. At the same time, diminished ovarian estrogen production seemed to increase mammary gland sensitivity to HPRL, leading to lactation. One may postulate, therefore, that the ingestion of sex steroids is associated with an over-all suppression of endogenous cyclic and, to a lesser extent, tonic gonadotropin secretion secondary to which ovarian function is attenuated. Without physiologic concentration of circulating estrogen, HPRL induces mammary alveolar function with the production of a milklike secretion.
