[Effect of obstetrical manipulations on the prostaglandin content of the uterus].

It is reported about the concentration of PG F2 alpha, PG E2, TxB2 and 6-keto-PG F1 alpha in amniotic fluid after obstetrical manipulations without rupture of amniotic membranes. Only digital distension of the cervix was followed by a rise of PG F2 alpha values. On the other side there was no increase in PG-concentration after application of a transabdominal catheter or after amniotomy.

[Control of follicle maturation by estrogen determination in the serum and urine during treatment with gonadotropins].

Determinations of estrogen concentration in urine or serum for estimation of follicle maturity is a precondition for treatment with gonadotropines. -- Both methods determination are retrospectively compared in 22 cases. Only the RIA-method of 17 beta-estradiol determination is capable to recognize an overstimulation with a high rate of reliability, because the evidence of total estrogens in urine lags behind. Clinical tests such as Insler-score don't indicate chemical overstimulation.

[Cervical complications in the use of prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) in pregnancy].

During pregnancy application of prostaglandins has been proved a successful method both for induction of midtrimester artificial abortion and cervical priming before termination of pregnancy at the end of first trimester. A report is given about three cases of cervical complications following the induction of artificial abortion and cervical priming with the consequence of operations. Therefore cervical priming should not be considered as an intervention without side effects and complications. It is indicated only in cases of primipregnancy with an unfavourable state of the cervical anatomy and at the end of first trimester.

[Side effects and early complications following cervical priming with prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) in inducing abortion in young women in their 1st pregnancy].

By the application of the priming with 2.5 mg Minprostin F2 alpha a statistically provable dilatation of the cervix in comparison with another group can be achieved. But the priming does not yet effect the occurrence of early complications of the interruption in comparison with conventional methods. In is to be supposed that this method has got a protecting effect on the occurrence of latent late complications of the interruption. Because of the secondary effects of prostaglandins the indication for softening of the cervix should be applied to a very limited range of patients only.

[Significance of prostaglandin formation in the endometrium for cycle regulation in the female].

By taking 91 samples of tissue the contents of PGE2 and PGF2 alpha in the cyclic endometrium was detected. Until the beginning of the menstruation a continuous rise of both substances could be observed. Especially during the latter half of the cycle the concentration of PGF2 alpha increased fundamentally causing a shifting within the relationship of both primary prostaglandins in favour of PGF2 alpha at the end of the cycle. Whereas hormones stimulate the formation of prostaglandins in the endometrium metindol stops it.

[Acute abdomen caused by an intrauterine device].

Case report about late complications caused by lying intrauterine devices (IUD). Ileus by strangulation represents a rare event when a closed IUD has perforated partially. A pelvic roentgenographic examination alone is not sufficient in order to give an estimation of the present position of the IUD. Results of hysterography and ultrasonographic examinations should be taken into account as well.

[Detection of estradiol receptors in the cyclic endometrium].

In 41 women the 17 beta-estradiol-receptors were determined in the cytosol fraction. The highest concentrations were found in cases of glandular-cystic hyperplasia, were as in the cyclic endometrium the highest concentrations were recognized before the date of ovulation at a rate of 189,8 +/- 80 fmol/mg protein. --During the treatment with contraceptive drugs only a small content of receptors was observed in midcycle.

[Determination of primary prostaglandin (Pgs) and main metabolite of PgF2 alpha in blood plasma for diagnosis of primary dysmenorrhoea].

PGE2, PGF2 alpha, and 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-PGF2 alpha were determined in two-day intervals by means of radio-immuno-assay from plasma of the arm veins of eight women with primary dysmenorrhoea. No evidence could be produced to any rise in plasma concentration of primary prostaglandins and of the main metabolite of PGF2 alpha in the course of one full menstrual cycle. These findings are likely to show that in cases of dysmenorrhoea determination of prostaglandins in peripheral venous blood is unsuitable for verification of high endogenous formation from the endometrium.

[Blood levels of primary prostaglandins along with use of Minprostin F2 alpha in the first trimester].

A dose of 2.5 mg of Minprostin F2 alpha in hydroxy -cellulose gel was intracervically applied to 30 primigravidae on the eve of planned interruption. Blood samples were taken to determine prostaglandin concentrations. Rise in PG F2 alpha concentrations was recordable from peripheral venous blood of the majority of patients. - A relationship was found to exist between the extent of side effects, clinical success, and circulatory resorption of PG F2 alpha.

[Endogenous prostaglandins and steroid hormones in premature labor induction in diabetic patients].

Prostaglandins E and F2 alpha as well as two steroid hormones, progesterone and unconjugated oestriol, were measured in amniotic fluid of 30 diabetics. The prostaglandin levels of all patients went up with significance after the os uteri had clearly opened. No rise in prostaglandin levels was recordable from induction of labour without opening of the os uteri. High primary prostaglandin levels, prior to induction of labour, and low progesterone/oestriol quotients were observed along with short-time courses of parturition. On the other hand, low prostaglandin values prior to induction of labour and slow rise during induction were recordable from protracted courses of labour.

[Radio-immunological testing of progesterone for diagnosis of corpus luteum insufficiency (author's transl)].

Radio-immunological assay was used to determine progesterone concentrations in serum during the luteal phase in 34 patients with treated and untreated corpus luteum insufficiency. Twenty patients with normal menstruation cycles were used as controls. Progesterone levels were found to be in agreement with the histological pattern of the endometrium. Progesterone values obtained from serial radio-immunological assay thus are high-accuracy criteria for diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of corpus luteum insufficiency.

Corpus Luteum Hormones↗

[Detection of prostaglandins from decidua (author's transl)].

PGE2 and PGF2 alpha were isolated from the decidua of an early pregnancy, following medical termination. The biosynthetic capacity for 6-keto-F1 alpha was tested by incubation, using 3H-labelled arachidonic acid. Prostaglandin concentrations in the decidua differed strongly from steroid hormones in plasma. Steroid hormone concentrations increased with continuity, whereas prostaglandin values remained extremely low.

[Concentration of hormones in early pregnancy in response to prostaglandin-induced abortion (author's transl)].

Minprostin-F2 alpha was injected intravenously to 20 women, and 15(S)-15-methyl-PG F2 alpha was intramuscularly injected to 19 women to induce abortion. All patients were in early pregnancy, none of them beyond the seventh week. The steroid hormones 17 beta-oestradiol and progesterone were reduced to 75 per cent of their initial concentrations in all cases of successful induction. HCG levels in plasma dropped with some delay.--The results are likely to suggest that the above decline of steroid hormones in response to abortion induced in early pregnancy was attributable to secondary regression of corpus luteum.

[The effect of lacquer coatings on indoor air quality using as example radiator lacquers].

Examination of the air of a redecorated office room revealed the lacquer used to paint the radiators as one of the possible reasons for complaints by persons working in that room. The dry lacquer was found to contain solvent residues and considerable amounts of aldehydes (from propanol to n-nonanal), in particular of n-hexanal. In model studies, the details of aldehyde formation have been elucidated. An electric radiator was painted twice with special radiator lacquer, allowed to dry for 3 days and placed into a 1 m3 glass cube. The cube was continuously purged with clean air, simulating air exchange rates of 0.6 and 0.15 per hour. During the experiment, air samples were taken at intervals of several days and analyzed by gas chromatography. The temperature of the radiator was varied between 40 and 60 degrees C. In addition to the different aldehydes which appeared in the air of the cube each at concentrations of up to the mg/m3 range, remarkable concentrations of the corresponding carboxylic acids were found. In analogy to the aldehyde series with a predominance of n-hexanal, there was a maximum concentration of 50 mg/m3 of n-hexanoic acid in the air of the cube. Taking as an example n-butyric acid, which has an odour threshold value of appr. 4 micrograms/m3, the values measured in the cube were used to calculate the corresponding indoor air concentration in a room of 50 m3 with an air exchange rate of 0.6 per hour. It was found that even after a 4-weeks operation of such a radiator, the odour threshold value was surpassed by a factor of 3. By using other types of lacquers (e.g. water-soluble lacquers), the occurrence of such aldehydes and carboxylic acids in indoor air can be largely prevented.
