[Fine-needle aspiration biopsy in the diagnosis of thyroid diseases].

On 105 patients with thyroid gland diseases thin needle aspiration biopsy was performed. The cytologic examinations proved to be of great importance for the diagnosis of thyroiditis and thyroid cancer. When lymphoid cells were found immunocytochemical examination was made additionally. It allows the differentiation of the subacute thyroiditis from the chronic and recurrent thyroiditis. The thin needle aspiration biopsy is practically a harmless manipulation. The great frequency of the asymptomatic chronic thyroiditis and of thyroid gland cancer supports the recommendation of a wider application of the method in all patients with thyroid gland diseases.

[Immunofluorescent and morphologic studies in Bekhterev's disease (preliminary findings)].

Fourteen skin biopsies (taken from the lumbosacral region) of patients with Bekhterev's disease were studied. Some histological changes in the connective tissue of the skin were followed up. Deposited immunogenic matters in the skin structures and the presence of circulating (serum) autoantibodies were looked for by immunofluorescence. In seven patients--a normal histological skin picture was established. A light to moderate subepidermal edema was observed in the rest of the biopsies as well as a tendency to focal homogenization and fragmentation of the collagen fibres, hyperemia, dilation and thickening of some vascular walls in hypoderm. Little parivascular cellular infiltrations were also found, composed of lymphocytes, macrophages, fibroblasts and plasmocytes. Via immunofluorescence, gamma globulins deposited in the vascular basal membranes were established in two patients and in three patients--circulating antinuclear autoantibodies. Immunological mechanisms are admitted to also play a role in the pathogenesis of some clinical forms of Bekhterev's disease.

Influence of the physiological regeneration and epithelialization using fractions isolated from Calendula officinalis.

Standard skin wounds have been surgically induced in Wistar albino rats. The wounds were covered with 5% unguentum containing fractions C1 and C5, isolated from the flowers of Calendula officinalis belonging to fam. Compositae, in combination with allantoin. Epithelization has been determined in dynamics as a percentage compared with the beginning of the experiment, using the formula (formula: see text), where t is the wound surface in mm2 and n is the respective day after the beginning of the experiment. The wound exudate has been studied cytologically using light- and fluorescent microscopy on the 8th, 24th and 48th hour after inflicting the wounds. The histological changes in biopsy material taken from the edges of the wounds on the 10th day have also been investigated. The drug combination applied markedly stimulates physiological regeneration and epithelialization. This effect is assumed to be due to more intensive metabolism of glycoproteins, nucleoproteins and collagen proteins during the regenerative period in the tissues.

[Morphological studies of the small intestine in experimental operations to isolate segments from the digestive tract].

Changes in the small intestine of white rats, developing within fifteen days of experimental operation for the isolation of a segment outside the digestive tract, are investigated using light and fluorescent microscopy. The isolated segment with intact nerve and humoral connections resides in the abdominal cavity. Findings in the distal (functioning) segment reveal hypertrophy of the muscular layers of the small intestine, more intensive development of the loose connective tissue, whereas the villi are shortened and thickened and display a reduced resorptive surface. This occurs at the expense of the considerably augmented number of mucous (calicine) cells, and of the dystrophic and desquamative changes taking place in the resorptive epithelium. In the isolated (lacking function) segment normal blood supply to the submucosa, slight atrophy of the muscle layers, and decreased number of glands of Lieberkühn is observed. In the same time the small intestinal villi are elongated, having larger resorptive surface, and containing reduced number of mucous (calicine) cells, whereas their epithelium is made up of cells with profuse and succulent cytoplasm free of desquamations. The inference is reached that the changes recorded in case of retaining the isolated segment within the abdominal cavity are attributable to the reciprocal action between the two small-intestinal areas by route of the existing neurohumoral linkage. Moreover the processes tend to preserve the isolated segment at the expense of developing structural-functional derangements in the functioning area.

[Effect of laser irradiation on the serological and morphological indices of experimental immune reactivity (a preliminary report)].

The authors examined guinea pigs, irradiated for a period of six days with helium-neon lazer according to a scheme, proposed by them. They determined the changes in the complement serum activity, blood level of heparine and histamine as well as histologic changes in adrenals, liver and spleen. When they compared the control animals (nonirradiated) with the experimental animals, they established a statisticaly significant elevation of the complement activity in serum, a tendency to lowering of histamine with an increase of heparine and hyperplastic reaction in zona glomerulosa of the adrenals. The obtained results suggested stimulation of immune mechanisms with antiallergic and antinflammatory effect.

[Effects of reduced diet and physical stress on liver lysosomes. Morphological and biochemical studies].

Groups of 15 rats each (I--non-reduced diet; II--non-reduced diet and physical stress; III--diet reduced by 40%; IV--reduced diet and physical stress) were examined after 20 and 140 days, respectively. The electron microscopic examination revealed that the most important changes had occurred in group III; there exists an excess of autophagolysosomes. The biochemical examinations show that the reduced diet (group III) also produces a considerable increase in activity of most of the lysosome enzymes in the liver. The occurrence of autophagy evidences that this is either physiologically induced or the manifestation of a beginning pathological process.

Sterol composition of Bulgarian soya and corn oils.

The free sterols, the sterol esters and the sterol glycosides of the raw soya and corn oils as well as those of the technical lecithin and the deodorizer distillated of the latter oils were isolated by preparative TLC. The composition of each of the isolated sterol derivatives was determined by GLC and MS. Sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol and an unknown sterol with a molecular weight of 428 are contained in almost all of the examined fractions of the soya oil and its refinement byproducts. Dehydrocampesterol is present in the free sterols of the raw soya oil and the soya lecithin. Stigmasterol is contained in the soya deodorizer distillate in high amounts. It was established that cholesterol was present in the sterol esters of the raw soya oil high amounts. Delta7-stigmastenol occurs only in the sterol esters of the latter oil. Sitosterol, campesterol and stimgasterol are the main components of all sterol fractions of the corn oil and its refinement products. Dehydrocampesterol and unknown sterols with molecular weights of 428 are present in the free sterols of the raw corn oil. Some sterol glycosides of the soya and corn lecithin are esterified with the same major fatty acid components of the glycerides, palmitic acid being the main one. The fatty acid compositon of sterol esters of the raw soya and corn oil roughly corresponds to the fatty acid composition of oils.
