[Our experience in the surgical treatment of stress incontinence in women].

The authors present the results from 12 operations, performed by the method of Hirsch and 15 operations by the method of Pereyra--a modification of Atanasov, in patients suffering from mean and grave degree of urinary stress incontinence. Combined operations--with colpoperineoraphies and total hysterectomies were made, when indications were present. The experience showed that the postoperative period in all patients had a smooth course without data for superposed urinary infection. The spontaneous miction recovered from the 7th to 19th day. No relapses of the disease were found up to two years after the operation.

[The importance of laparoscopy in the diagnosis of tubal sterility].

Analyzing the findings in diagnostic laparoscopy the authors describe in details and interpret the results from the examined organs in the pelvis and abdominal cavity. Object of the study are 200 sterile women, admitted to the clinic of Sterility and Gynecological Endocrinology of Research Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology for examination. The mean age of the patients is 29 years as 128 of the women suffer from primary sterility, but 72--from secondary sterility. The results are summarized and interpreted in 5 groups. Uterine body--form, size, motility, measurements, adhesions, fibrillary apparatus, patency; Ovaries--form, size, position, motility, surface, follicles; Adhesions--type, dimensions, vascularization, position (in the pelvis and abdominal cavity); Data for endometriosis--presence, size and localization of endometriomas, endometriotic cysts and outgrowths, an increased vascular line. The inference, which the authors make, is that laparoscopy is basic (and necessary) current diagnostic method for obtaining real notion for the state of internal genital organs (especially for tubal factor in female sterility) and furthermore also for evaluation of the necessity and possibility for performance of microsurgical reproductive operations.

Active substance from the serum of laying hens and its effect on uterine smooth muscles.

Blood serum from laying hens has an excitatory effect on isolated uterine smooth muscles of laying hens. This excitatory effect is not observed for the blood serum of pullets and cocks. After ultrafiltration and gel filtration on Sephadex G25, it was found that the excitatory effect of the blood serum was due to a low-molecular substance (m.w. below 5000 Da). The effect of this active substance was found to be inhibited by indomethacin, brufen and SC 19220. The presence of this substance in the serum of laying hens and its contractile effects, which are probably associated with prostaglandin mechanisms of regulation in the uterine smooth muscles, suggests that it is associated in the processes of oviposition in hens.

[Pharmacological and clinico-pharmacological studies of diazepam powder in suspensions].

Studied was the preparation diazepam-pulvis for suspension (DPS) with regard to its tranquillizing and myorelaxing doses, inhibiting the aggression, and preventing the stress conditions in domestic animals and birds. It was established that at oral application to pigs at rates of 1 to 2 mg/kg body mass DPS produced a pronounced tranquillizing effect, while at 3 mg/kg it led to myorelaxation as well. In sheep tranquillizing effect was seen when amounts of 3 to 5 mg/kg body mass were used, and myorelaxation was achieved with 6.6 to 13.2 mg/kg. In male calves tranquillization was manifested after doses of 3 mg/kg body mass were applied. In hens the tranquillizing dose was found to be 3 mg/kg body mass, and the myorelaxing one--4 mg/kg; in cocks the respective doses were 5 and 7 mg/kg body mass. At the rate of 3 mg/kg body mass DPS was found to enhance the thiopental-sodium narcosis. When offered to pigs at 2 mg/kg body mass in admixture with the feed DPS led to tranquillization and suppression of the active and passive defense response. No full prevention of cannibalism could be achieved. The daily administration in the course of 30 days with the ration of bull-calves at the rate of 3 mg/kg body mass was shown to calm the animals under loose housing in boxes and affect favourably their weight gain. Admixed with the feed of cocks at 5 mg/kg DPS suppressed aggressiveness.

[Diseases of the locomotor apparatus in pigs on commercial farm complexes].

This type of affections concern mainly pigs in the first several days following birth, and rarely pigs up to the age of 15 to 20 days. Their manifestation has a stationary character. They are encountered more frequently and on a mass scale in the winter and spring months. The carpus joints are chiefly affected, whereas the distal joints of the hind legs are much more rarely involved. Detailed epizootiologic, bacteriologic, clinical, haematological, biochemical, and X-ray investigations have been carried out with normal and diseased pigs and the respective sows. The disease process has been found to develop under the influence of occasionally pathogenic pigsty microbial flora, which entered the body most often through the affected skin of the knee joints when sucking. Laboratory studies revealed that Staphylococcus hyicus took part. Carriers of the infection were the sows from which the same causative agents were isolated. Biochemically, a lowered level of the serum calcium was demonstrated, accompanied by well defined leukocytosis in the more strongly affected pigs and their sows. It was shown that in terms of prophylaxis most effective were the local treatments of the diseased knee joints of pigs in the first three days after birth with granulin as well as the treatment of the sows and their offsprings with antibiotics, vitamins, and calcium preparations. It was shown that the regular and opportune disinfection with 1-2 per cent sodium hydroxide was of special interest.

[Pharmacological and toxicological studies on wild sunflower Doronicum hungaricum Rchb].

Studied were the total water extracts (infusions) of wild sunflower (Doronicum hungaricum Rchb), and separately of alcohol and water extracts. It was found that the pharmacologic and toxicologic effects were governed by the water-soluble flactions. At oral administration to albino mice the total water extract corresponding to 10 g of the dried plant per kg b. w. no toxic phenomena were observed. At subcutaneous injection of the water extract of 10 g of the dried plant per kg b. w. and venous injection of 3.5 g of the dried plant per kg b. w. of albino mice as well as venous injection of the water extract corresponding to 2.5 g of the dried plant per kg b. w. of cats with narcosis there was enhancement of breathing followed by depression of this process along with a drop of the systemic blood pressure down do the zero line, and exitus. A negative intropic effect was produced on an isolated frog heart by a water extract corresponding to 1 g of the dried plant/100 cm3-500 cm3, and a moderate spasm--on an isolated rabbit intestine by an extract 1/100 cm3-500 cm3. The venous injection of the extract to cats with narcosis at 0.05 to 1.0 g of the dried plant per kg b. w. caused depression. All these effects were blocked after atropine treatment. In an experiment with 3 cows with the use of 50 g of finely ground dried plant mass inthe daily ration per cow for 10 days a moderate enhancement of milk secretion was produced. It is believed that the phenomena observed are due to M cholinemimetic action.

[Biological activity of vitamin E in feed mixtures with a varying santoquin content].

Studied was the content of vitamins A and E as well as that of fats, aldehydes, and peroxides and the biologic activity of vitamin E with regard to the amount of santoquin in combined forage mixtures for birds. The experiments were carried out with a finisher forage mixture for broilers to which santoquin was added in amounts of 0.010, 0.016, 0.020, and 0.025 per cent. It was found that at an antioxidant concentration of 0.020 per cent a best protection of the biologic vitamin E activity was provided. The rapid inactivation of vitamin E at a level of santoquin lower than 0.016 per cent was associated with the intense deposition of products of the final oxidation when fats turned rancid. Taking into consideration the importance of fats as a source of energy a 0.020 per cent level of santoquin in the forage mixtures for broilers is suggested.

[Toxicity of sodium monensin for pigs].

Studied were the acute and subchronic toxicity of monensin-Na in pigs. The investigations were carried out with elancoban-100, containing 10 per cent monensin-Na. A total of 46 pigs were used, weighing 15 to 60 kg. The preparation was applied individually via the nose or with the feed. It was found that nasally at 5 mg/kg the preparation did not lead to intoxication; rates of 10 and 20 mg/kg proved toxic, and a dose of 30 mg/kg was lethal. Feed containing 300 ppm of monensin-Na given but once led to intoxication and death with part of the animals. Pig tolerated well continuous (33 days) intake of feed that contained the sodium salt of monensin in concentrations of 120 and 240 ppm - no changes in the general status and behaviour were observed, nor were there any deviations in the morphologic and biochemical composition of the blood. It was demonstrated that the low amounts of monensin stimulated the weight gain of pigs. On the other hand, the clinical picture of the intoxication consisted in going off feed, higher pulse and respiration rates, involvement of the nervous system (depression of the nociceptive, eye closure, and ear reflexes, paresis of the hind limbs, and in severe cases - of the forelimbs too), hematuria in most of the animals, higher SGPT activity, and delayed ESR. Morphologically, there were vascular and slightly manifested degenerative changes in the parenchymal organs, red to brown urine in the bladder, strongly enlarged gallbladder, and catarrhal and hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Histologically, there was granular and fatty degeneration of the kidneys, liver, and heart, hyperemia, perivascular and pericellular edema and degenerative changes in the glial cells of the berebrum, cerebellum, and medulla oblongata.

[Etiopathogenesis and prevention of encephalomalacia in chickens].

Studies were carried out on the dissemination of encephalomalation with chickens. The quality of the feeding-mixes, meant for the different categories of fowls, was also studied with regard to the contents of vitamins, fats, aldehyde and peroxide number and antioxidizers. The contents of vitamin E was also determined, as well as its biological activity in a biological material. The prophylactic effect of different vitamin preparations was tested in combination with other means of prophylaxis of broilers against encephalomalation. It was proved that the increase of aldehydes and peroxides in feeding-mixes could lead to the appearance of encephalomalation with chickens. The quantity of santokvin--200 g/t of fodder enabled the good conservation and preservation of the biological activity of vitamin E. The index 'biological activity' is a more appropriate criterium for a supply of chickens with vitamin E, rather than its quantitative contents in biological substrates. On the basis of the experiments made, a disgram is offered about the prophylaxis of encephalomalation with chickens.

[Trial of a hyperimmune serum against para-influenza 3, bovine adenovirus 1, infectious rhinotracheitis and mucosal disease].

A four-valent serum was obtained by parallel hyperimmunization of cattle with live viral suspensions of parainfluenza-3, bovine adenovirus I, the virus of infectious rhinotracheitis and the mucous disease virus. The serum's neutralizing titres are between 1:1280 and 1:2560. The lasting exploitation of serum producing cattle indicates that no competition exists between the four antigens used in the process of hyperimmunization. Experimental testing of the serum on calves and its application in practical work proved its prophylactic and medicative effect. These results confirm the thesis that the use of passive immunoprophylaxis is needed in respiratory diseases of calves under conditions existing in intensive cattle-breeding.
