[Immunoprophylaxis of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis].

The live attenuated vaccine against infectious rhinotracheitis (LAV), the live trivaccine against infectious rhinotracheitis (LT), the concentrated etanolsaponin vaccine against infectious rhinotracheitis (CESV) and the ethanol-saponin vaccine against infectious rhinotracheitis (ESV) can all be used as immunoprophylactic means in the control of infectious rhinotracheitis in cattle. The first two live vaccines are applied to calves in infection foci, and the two inactivated vaccines are used with cows. The comparative testing of CESV and ESV in experimental conditions on calves has shown that the first possesses higher immunogenicity--used in a twice lower dose it produces several times higher level of the neutralizing antibodies against the infectious rhinotracheitis virus. The use of LAV and LT in the practice under the conditions of established infections of infectious rhinotracheitis in calves has given good results. The immunization of calves at the immediate menace of this infection has lowered the morbidity rate, and death cases were no longer observed. The use of CESV and ESV with pregnant cows on a prophylactic basis against infectious rhinotracheitis has also given good results manifested in the full suppression of abortions.

Immunization against mucosal disease--bovine viral Diarrhea (MD-BVD) in calves applying lapinized vaccine against swine fever and a modified live virus of MD-BVD.

Calves vaccinated with the modified strain C24V react by creating neutralizing antibodies in high titres and are resistent to infection while non-immunized calves manifest the clinical symptoms of MD-BVD. Calves, vaccinated with the lapinized strain "K" of the SF virus react by creating neutralizing antibodies in low titres against the vius of MD-BVD and manifest no apparent clinical symptoms after challenge with the virulent strain MD-BVD.

Serum cobalt in children with essential hypertension.

The effect of cobalt on the cardiovascular system is one of many aspects of cobalt metabolism in humans. Elastin and collagen are the main proteins of the vascular wall. The aims of this study were: 1) to determine serum cobalt concentrations in children with hypertension; and 2) to study the correlation between serum cobalt and some biological markers of the extracellular matrix of the vascular wall, i.e., anti-elastin and anti-collagen type IV antibodies. Patients showed statistically significant higher levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and significantly lower serum cobalt concentrations, than controls. Children with hypertension showed significantly higher levels of total cholesterol (P = 0.0003) and collagen type IV IgM (P = 0.04). Collagen type IV IgG levels (P = 0.027) were lower than in controls. Serum cobalt in patients showed a correlation with systolic blood pressure (r = -0.44, P = 0.05), elastin IgM (r = 0.60, P = 0.007), and collagen type IV IgG (r = -0.46, P = 0.04). Our data suggest the existence of a correlation between changes in levels of serum cobalt, total cholesterol, anti-collagen type IV antibodies, and essential hypertension in children. This is the first study of serum cobalt in children with essential hypertension.

Disturbances in rat smooth-muscle induced by a substance with fungicide action.

The fungicide substance QAS [N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-N,N'-di(8,15-dichloropentadeca-5,10- dien)ethylenediamine methylsulphate] has a biphasic effect on the spontaneous electrical and mechanical activity of smooth-muscle samples of rat corpus and guinea-pig taenia coli. During the first phase of QAS application membrane depolarization and increased spontaneous spike frequency were recorded. The tone of the preparations (resting tone) increased transiently. Calcium ion-entry blockers did not affect the contractile effect of QAS, but K(+)-channel blockers and some modulators of the second messenger system abolished or decreased it. During the second phase depolarization increased progressively, spike frequency decreased and the increase in resting tone recorded during the first phase was eliminated. The results reveal that the long-lasting depolarizing effect of QAS (in concentrations used for plant protection) probably inactivates the entry of Ca2+ into the smooth-muscle cells and disturbs Ca2+ homeostasis.
