Hydroxyurea, a selective cytotoxic agent for cells in DNA synthesis, injected intraperitoneally at 24 and 48 hours after the first painting with 1 percent croton oil, significantly reduced the tumor yield in the two-stage chemical carcinlogenesis in mouse skin. A comparable group of mice receiving hydroxyurea only once at 24 hours had a tumor induction similar to that in controls.

Sexually dysfunctional diabetic and nondiabetic males were compared with a group of normal controls using different endocrinological, psychophysiological, and psychological parameters. One hundred male subjects participated in this study: 47 diabetics with sexual dysfunction (DD), 31 nondiabetics with sexual dysfunction (NDD), and 22 normal controls (C). They were evaluated by an internist (physical examination and medical history), a psychologist (psychological and sexual functioning tests), a psychiatrist (psychiatric history and mental status examination), a urologist (genitourinary physical examination), and an endocrine biochemist (evaluation of endocrine factors). Additionally, subjects were evaluated for nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) during three nights in the sleep laboratory to obtain a differential diagnosis of impotence, that is, psychogenic vs. organic. Both sexually dysfunctional groups showed significant differences on several measures in the psychological and psychophysiological evaluations. There were also significant differences between these two groups and the control group. Plasma levels of total testosterone and serum levels of prolactin, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) showed no significant differences among the three groups, but there were some significant correlations between the endocrine and psychological measures. No significant correlations were found between the endocrine and psychophysiological measures.
The author presents his experience with hyperhidrosis treatment using type-A botulinum toxin. The drug was applied on axillary, palmar, plantar, facial, inguinal, and gluteus areas for a 36-month period. The effect achieved-sweating decrease-was observed in 100% of the patients for a variable period ranging from 5 to 14 months. There was a slight decrease in hand muscle strength in some cases, which was spontaneously recovered after 2 weeks.
Granulocyte transfusions are frequently used during the leukopenic phase of induction chemotherapy for acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) although no controlled study has documented their usefulness. We have compared the morbidity and mortality of febrile episodes in granulocytopenic (less than 500/mm3) adults with ANLL who received granulocytes and those who did not. Granulocytes were obtained from related normal donors using a continuous flow centrifuge. Seventeen patients who received 98 transfusions during 23 febrile episodes were compared with 22 patients who received no granulocytes during 35 febrile episodes. No significant difference in clearing of documented infection occurred between the transfused (71%) or the control (76%) group. Granulocytes did not result in more rapid termination of febrile episodes nor in significant decrease in fever 24 hours following the transfusion. Factors contributing to the lack of obvious clincal benefit are discussed.
In this study we looked at children dying from progressive malignant diseases and their families, to see whether they discussed the child's impending death together. We also looked at what factors might influence this. We questioned staff in the oncology department about their attitude to an open approach in talking about death and their views of how often it occurred. Analysis of 31 children over 3 years old and their families showed that the approach of death was mutually acknowledged by six families (19%); seven (23%) children were felt to know but chose not to discuss death; in two (6%) families, discussion with the child was blocked; nine (29%) children died unaware, and in seven (23%) families, what the children felt was unknown. Staff members (22) all advocated an open, honest approach in talking to children about their death but varied widely and overestimated how often they believed discussion of the child's impending death occurred (range, 10%-80%; median, 45%).
We examined a 4-year-old boy who had a painful blind eye, rubeosis iridis, and leukokoria. Ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) detected intraocular calcification and other features suggestive of retinoblastoma. The CT scan showed extraocular extension along the optic nerve. Intracranial extension of the tumor could not be definitely excluded by CT scan with intrathecal metrizamide infusion. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and CT performed after radiation and chemotherapy were useful in excluding intracranial spread of malignant cells, thereby aiding the selection of a surgical approach to ensure complete removal of the involved portion of the optic nerve.
