Proliferative activity in the adrenal cortex of 10 days old chick was studied using autoradiographic technique with tritiated thymidine. The study provides an approximate distribution of DNA synthesizing and/or dividing cells in the chick adrenal cortex. The data indicate the presence of dividing cells both in the subcapsular zone (SCZ) and the inner zone (IZ) and their low or non-migratory activity within 360 hrs after injection of the isotope. This clearly suggests that both the SCZ and IZ are proliferative in chick adrenal.
Furazolidone a synthetic nitrofuran used in the treatment of cholera, was found to cause prophage induction and filament formation in Vibrio cholerae. Maximum induction of phage beta was obtained at a drug concentration of 0.5 microgram/ml. Neither induction of prophage nor filamentation took place if the drug treatment was carried out in the presence of 2.5 micrograms/ml chloramphenicol, indicating a requirement for de novo protein synthesis. Our results strongly suggest the existence of "SOS" type functions in Vibrio cholerae.

A program on an inexpensive microcomputer was designed to elicit personal histories from patients in a general psychiatric ward. Their answers were compared with the information recorded by the responsible psychiatric team. Where answers disagreed with the clinicians' records, the patient was interviewed to investigate the discrepancy. In the computer-elicited case-histories 90% of items were correct; a further 3% of items were considered correct by the patient. Most patients' computer histories revealed several items unknown to the clinicians and of importance in the management of the patient. Most patients (88%) found that the computer interrogation was as easy as a clinical interview. Computer assessment is proposed as a useful technique for the routine assessment of patients to augment the clinician's findings and to allow him to concentrate on the most relevant areas.
The Caesarean section rate for breech presentation has fallen from 60% in 1978 to 38% in 1980 at the University teaching hospital in Hong Kong. The number of Caesarean sections carried out for the indication of "unfavourable pelvis' in 1980 was approximately half that in 1978. No significant difference in perinatal outcome was noted in the group delivered vaginally in these 2 years. It was concluded that a high Caesarean section rate in term breech presentation may not be justified in modern obstetric practice because of the associated increase in maternal morbidity. Many patients labelled as having an "unfavourable pelvis' can in fact have a safe vaginal breech delivery.
An alkaline phosphatase secretion-blocked mutant of Bacillus licheniformis 749/C was isolated. This mutant had defects in the phoP and phoR regions of the chromosome. The selection procedure was based on the rationale that N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine can induce mutations of closely linked multiple genes. The malate gene and the phoP and phoR genes are located at the 260-min position in the Bacillus subtilis chromosome; hence, the malate gene could be used as a marker for the mutation of the phoP and phoR regions of the chromosome. In a two-step selection procedure, strains defective in malate utilization were first selected with the cephalosporin C procedure. Second, these malate-defective strains were further screened in a dye medium to select strains with defects in alkaline phosphatase secretion. One stable mutant (B. licheniformis 749/cNM 105) had a total secretion block for alkaline phosphatase and had the following additional characteristics: (i) the amount of alkaline phosphatase synthesized was comparable to that in the wild type; (ii) the alkaline phosphatase was membrane bound; (iii) the mutant strain alkaline phosphatase, in contrast to that of the wild type, could not be extracted with MgCl2, although the amounts of protein extracted from each strain were comparable; (iv) the sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel pattern of MgCl2-extracted proteins from the mutant strain was different from that of the wild-type proteins; (v) the mutant, unlike the wild type, could not use malate as a sole source of carbon; and (vi) the outside surface of the wall of the mutant cells contained an additional electron-dense layer that was not present on the wild-type cell wall surface.

Computerized assessment which is objective, standardized and easily repeated has been shown to be acceptable to general psychiatric patients. Fifty-three subjects (43 phobics and 10 normals feigning phobias) showed no unusual apprehension in approaching this novel procedure; all were able to complete the computer interview. Furthermore, half of them claimed that they found the interview more acceptable and found it easier to communicate with the computer than with a clinician. Only nine patients preferred the clinician. The reasons for this are discussed.
An automated assessment interview was given by a microcomputer to 26 randomly selected patients, referred for treatment of phobias. The results were compared with those of conventional clinical assessment by experienced behaviour therapists. Ratings of overall severity and intensity of specific types of agoraphobia and social phobia were derived from the computer interview, and correlated very closely with global ratings by the clinician and also with an independent structured clinical assessment. The computer also elicited behavioural targets to serve as a basis for exposure treatment. Blind assessors rated these targets as highly as those arrived at by clinicians in respect of their practicability, precision and appropriateness for treatment. The automated technique is inexpensive, saves clinicians' time and can be made widely available for screening, assessment and progress monitoring. It may also provide a basis for automated exposure treatment.
Abscisic acid (ABA) did not affect the infectivity of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) in vitro. The same dilutions of ABA when applied on the leaves of Chenopodium amaranticolor Coste and Reyn. at different intervals before inoculation affected development of local lesions variably at different dilutions. The inhibition of local lesion formation was reduced at other intervals leading to stimulation at thirty minutes and six hours intervals. Post-inoculation treatments with 2 mg/l of ABA gave stimulation of local lesion formation, though other dilutions gave inhibition. Viral concentration was stimulated in the tomato seedlings root dipped in 0.2 mg/l of ABA for 6 hours and inoculated 24 hours after transplantation. Incorporation of different concentrations of ABA into tissue culture medium reduced the growth of the TMV infected tobacco callus tissue and stimulated the infectivity of the tissue grown over it assayed after three weeks.

The effect of MAO inhibitor on reserpine-induced release of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla of the rose-ringed parakeet was investigated in this biochemical, histochemical, and ultrastructural study. The MAO inhibitor provided some blockade of epinephrine secretion and was ineffective in blocking norepinephrine secretion. Differences between birds and mammals were noted, suggesting that different mechanisms of catecholamine release may be operating in the two classes.
