A dosimetric survey of microwave radiation emitted by electrosurgical units used in operating rooms indicated that surgeons expose themselves to levels that may be hazardous, and that ocular exposures are especially high: 20 cm from the active lead, electric field strength at the eye/forehead position was 9.0 X 10(6) V2/M2 for the monopolar unit; and magnetic field strength at this position reached a magnitude of 3.5 A2/M2. These electric and magnetic fields exceeded the TLVs of the American National Standards Institute. The authors concluded that the high levels of microwave radiation generated by electrosurgery devices should receive immediate attention to assess health effects associated with such exposures.
This report is derived from analytic data in the case of a young woman with a concurrent neurologic deficit, prosopagnosia. The condition consists of an inability to recognize or evoke the facial images of the most familiar persons in one's life. With this disability, will there be a corresponding dysfunction in the psychologic structuralization comprising object constancy? The clinical material presented indicates a lack of object constancy in this patient, as well as a corresponding developmental fixation at the rapprochement level of separation-individuation. Reconstruction of the patient's childhood appears to corroborate these findings.
Forty-five species of birds and 22 species of mammals of the terrestrial and aquatic fauna, herbivores as well as carnivores, were investigated during the period 1973-1976 for cadmium-accumulating properties in order to find biomonitors for cadmium in the Swedish environment. The herbivores of the terrestrial fauna, birds as well as mammals, are preferred to carnivores, since they demonstrate generally higher renal Cd levels. The moose (Alces alces), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and hare (Lepus europeus and Lepus timidus) were found to be suitable as biomonitors because of their common occurrence and uniform geographical distribution. The eider duck (Somateria mollissima), although a short-distance migrating bird whose diet is composed mainly of mussels and crustaceans, and which lives along a great part of the Swedish coastline, is suggested as a biomonitor of cadmium for the aquatic environment. The accumulation rate of cadmium in the kidneys is rapid. Renal levels of cadmium in the parts per million range are reached 10 weeks after hatching. Juvenile birds should be collected for monitoring purposes before leaving their feeding domains at the end of the summer.

Seriously damaged eider ducks (Somateria mollissima) and long-tailed ducks (Clangula hyemalis) were shot in connection with an oil spill in 1974. Liver and kidney tissues were analyzed for environmental pollutants and lead analysis gave irreproducible results. By means of X-ray photographs, X-ray-dense particles could be observed in the tissues. The foreign particles were extracted by dissolution of the organ tissues in Soluene-350 (Packard Instruments Co. Inc) and then washed with toluene. The insoluble particles consisted of lead and bone splinters of varying size. The form of the former ranged from irregular fragments to dust, and arose by disruption of lead pellets upon collision with bone tissue. Birds shot with lead pellets should not be used for lead determination unless careful X-ray investigations are made prior to the chemical analysis. Determinations should be made on at least two different samples of the tissue examined.
The electrocardiogram in 1,029 obese subjects was correlated with the severity of obesity and with age, sex and blood pressure. The heart rate, PR interval, QRS duration, QTc interval and voltage (R + S or Q wave in leads I, II and III) increased, and the QRS vector shifted to the left with increasing obesity. These changes were independent of age, sex and blood pressure. Bradycardia was present in 19% of the patients, but tachycardia in only 0.5%. ST and T wave abnormalities were present in 11%, correlating better with increasing age and blood pressure than with severity of obesity. Conduction abnormalities were infrequent. Low voltage was present in only 3.9% of the patients and QTc prolongation was present in 28.3%. The heart rate and QRS voltage increase with increasing obesity. Conduction is slowed, and the QRS vector shifts toward the left as percent overweight increases. These changes must be considered when evaluating both baseline electrocardiographic studies in obese patients and the changes seen during weight reduction.

This highly sensitive immunoenzymometric method involves monoclonal antibodies, a common-capture microsphere, and a rapid, membrane-filtration separation step. The common-capture solid phase is monoclonal anti-fluorescein antibody convalently attached to 6.5 micron-diameter latex particles. In sandwich-type assays for large-molecule analytes, the capture antibody is conjugated with fluorescein isothiocyanate and the probe antibody is conjugated with beta-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23). In competitive assays for small analytes, the analyte-beta-galactosidase conjugate competes with the analyte in the clinical samples for the fluoresceinated capture antibody. After simultaneous incubation of the reagents for 2 h, the bound and unbound reagents are separated by filtration through the bottom of each well of a 96-well plate. Substrate (4-methylumbelliferyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside) is then added to the wells, and the rate of product formation is determined kinetically for 12 min. The rate is proportional to the concentration of analyte in the sandwich assays and inversely proportional in the competitive assays. The assay results for choriogonadotropin, thyrotropin, digoxin, and thyroxin show the assay to be sensitive, rapid, and applicable to any size analyte. With this system, several different sandwich and (or) competitive-type assays can be performed simultaneously on the same plate.

The study of phagocytosis in the bovine uterus requires the collection of large numbers of uterine leukocytes. A method of stimulating polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) invasion into the bovine uterus with oyster glycogen was tested. Following glycogen treatment, uterine aspirates contained large numbers (10(6)-10(9)) of viable uterine PMN. In Experiment 1, six cows were treated at one-week intervals by intrauterine infusion with 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0% oyster glycogen, respectively. Uterine lumens were lavaged at 0, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 168 hours post-infusion with each concentration of glycogen. The mean peak response for PMN was at 12 hours post-infusion of glycogen. In Experiment 2, uterine and peripheral blood PMN were collected from each of 12 cows. Phagocytosis was measured as the percent of (32)Phosphorus-labeled Staphylococcus aureus ingested by PMN during a one-hour incubation. Mean (+/- standard deviation) percent phagocytosis was not statistically different between blood (53.6 +/- 11.0%) and uterine (43.8 +/- 13.0%) PMN. This indicates that phagocytic activity was similar for PMN collected either from the uterine lumen or peripheral blood.
