Primary clear cell carcinoma of the larynx.

The clinical and pathological findings in three patients with clear cell carcinoma of the larynx are described. This type of neoplasm in the larynx is extremely rare. The aggressiveness of the tumour and its high biological malignancy are stressed.

Adenocarcinoma↗

Simultaneous primary oat cell carcinoma (apudoma) and squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx.

The first case of the association of oat cell carcinoma and squamous carcinoma of the hypopharynx occurring in a 57-year-old man is reported. The patient underwent total laryngopharyngectomy with radical neck dissection, but died 3 1/2 months after diagnosis with multiple bone metastases of the ribs and vertebrae. The histogenesis of oat cell carcinoma in the hypopharynx is discussed, together with the therapeutic approach for the simultaneous occurrence of two primary malignant neoplasms in the same organ.

Carcinoma, Small Cell↗

Parotid involvement by Lennert's lymphoma.

The authors report an unusual case of Lennert's lymphoma occurring in a 65-year-old patient. The tumour involved the right parotid gland and lymph nodes of the neck. It has responded to combined treatment (radiation and chemotherapy) extremely well.

Aged↗

Laryngeal cancer in pregnancy.

A case of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx occurring in a 26-year-old woman during pregnancy is presented. From a review of the world literature appears that the occurrence of cancer of the larynx in pregnancy is exceptional. Therapy consisted of total laryngectomy and right radical neck dissection. At eleven months from surgery the patient is alive.

Adult↗

Benign solitary schwannoma of the cervical vagus nerve. A case report with a review of the literature.

A case of benign solitary schwannoma of the cervical vagus nerve occurring in a 12-year-old girl is reported. Clinical and pathological problems connected with the neoplasm are discussed. From a review of the literature, the lesion seems to be less rare than is commonly believed. Treatment is also discussed, including the possibility of a surgical procedure which allows the restoration of function in the vagus nerve.

Adolescent↗

Lennert's lymphoma (lympho-epithelioid cellular lymphoma).

The authors describe a case of Lennert's lymphoma occurring in a 64-year-old male patient. After a comprehensive examination of the world literature on the disease, clinical and pathologic problems, as well as differential diagnoses from other malignant lymphoid proliferations, are discussed. This is the first observation to be reported in the otorhinolaryngologie literature.

Diagnosis, Differential↗

Radiation-induced fibrosarcoma of the mandible following treatment for bilateral retinoblastoma.

A case of fibrosarcoma of the mandible following radiotherapy for bilateral retinoblastoma and occurring in an 11-year-old female child is described. After a clinical description of the case, reported with histological documentation, problems connected with the pathogenesis of the malignancies are dealt with. Besides irradiation, genetic mutation as a carcinogenetic co-factor is taken into consideration.

Child↗

Malignant pleomorphic fibrous histiocytoma of the larynx. (Further observations).

An exceptional case of pleomorphic malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the larynx occurring in a 68-year-old male patient is reported. A significant histological documentation is given. Problems connected with histogenesis, treatment and prognosis are dealt with. Stress is laid on the need to establish differential diagnosis from other neoplasms, in particular liposarcoma and spindle-cell carcinoma.

Aged↗

Nasal metastasis from primary cancer of the kidney.

A case of nasal metastasis, indicating primary cancer of the kidney, and occurring in a 67-year-old man, is described. Differential diagnosis and pathogenesis are discussed. In particular, stress is laid on the problems concerning diagnosis when the nasal metastasis is the first clinical symptom. A clinicosemeiologic study of the patient is mandatory, as histology alone is not always sufficient to settle all doubts, even with the support of ample histochemical investigations.

Aged↗

Infantile olfactory neuroblastoma. A clinicopathological study with review of the literature.

A case of olfactory neuroblastoma occurring in a 3-year-old girl is reported. The rarity of the lesion in early childhood is stressed and discussed with the clinico-pathological characteristics of the tumour, which are apparently more aggressive the younger the patient. Olfactory neuroblastoma should be considered as a possible diagnosis regardless of the age of the patient.

Child, Preschool↗

Histiocytic tumors of the larynx: a clinicopathological study with review of the literature.

A case of primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the larynx occurring in a 58-year-old man is described. This neoplasm is extremely rare in the larynx and the case reported (the second described by me) is the fifth so far reported in the world literature. The patient died after 19 months from first surgical treatment and the autopsy confirmed the histological diagnosis. The cases of histiocytic tumors of the larynx previously reported in the literature are re-examined and reclassified. Biological behavior and the therapy of the tumor, as well as differential diagnosis from other neoplasms, are discussed.

Aged↗

Primary malignant haemangiopericytoma of the larynx (a case report with autopsy).

This is a report of an exceptional case of haemangiopericytoma of the larynx, which occurred in a 50-year-old male patient. Histological examination of biopsy fragments allowed us to make the correct diagnosis, later confirmed at autopsy. From a comprehensive review of the world literature on haemangiopericytomas, it appears that cases of indisputable well-documented laryngeal occurrence of the neoplasm amount to two only, including the present case. The morphological pattern, histogenesis, biological behaviour and therapy of the tumour, as well as differential diagnosis from other lesions, are discussed.

Hemangiopericytoma↗

Primary Ewing's sarcoma of the maxilla: a clinicopathological study of four cases.

The author reports four cases of Ewing's sarcoma primarily located in the maxilla and emphasizes the rarity of such a primary location and the fact that this series contained cases observed at the Department of Otolaryngology of Padua University during the last three years which, though small, is the largest so far reported. In addition to a review of the world literature on the subject, the problems related to the differential diagnosis, in particular from reticulum cell sarcoma of bone, neuroblastoma and olfactory neuroblastoma are discussed. The cases reported are accurately described and histologically documented. Treatment of Ewing's sarcoma is also discussed and, according to the author, the elective therapeutic procedure should consider local irradiation and intermittent but prolonged systemic chemotherapy, leaving mutilating surgery only for recurrent tumours.

Adult↗

Primary oat-cell carcinoma of the larynx following supraglottic laryngectomy for squamous-cell carcinoma.

An extremely rare case is reported of a primary oat-cell carcinoma of the larynx in a 70-year-old man who had been treated eight years previously for squamous-cell carcinoma of the larynx by means of supraglottic laryngectomy. A review of the literature revealed only 5 unequivocal previous reports of this primary oat-cell tumor; the present report makes a total of 6 cases. The morphologic pattern, histogenesis and biologic behavior are discussed. The patient of this report was treated by surgical intervention and radiotherapy. He was well, six months later. Only one of the 5 patients previously reported survived for more than a few months. This type of lesion has a poor prognosis because of its tendency to metastasize early to various organs.
