Urinary tract abnormalities due to chronic psychogenic polydipsia.

Of 10 patients who excreted urine with low specific gravity and had chronic psychogenic polydipsia, five had urinary tract abnormalities, ranging from large bladders with large postvoid residuals to severe hydronephrosis, renal back pressure atrophy, and renal failure.

Photosensitization of liposomal membranes by hematoporphyrin derivative.

The putative tumor-localizing and -photosensitizing fraction of hematoporphyrin derivative, the fastest migrating fraction of hematoporphyrin derivative separated by polyacrylamide gel filtration (HPD-A), photosensitized lipid peroxidation and membrane lysis in egg phosphatidylcholine liposomes. The rate of membrane damage was approximately 4-fold faster in oxygen compared to anoxia, with evidence for the involvement of singlet oxygen. The diffusion of HPD-A into small liposomes led to a shift of the Soret band from 363 nm in buffer to 398 nm accompanied by 4-fold enhancement of the fluorescence. The presence of human serum albumin retarded the diffusion of HPD-A into small liposomes, which is attributed to partial complexing of the HPD-A. A different effect of serum albumin was the protection of large liposomes from photosensitized lysis by incorporated HPD-A. This protection is attributed to scavenging of singlet oxygen, as evidenced by oxidation of tryptophan in the protein.

Somatic findings in patients with psychogenic polydipsia.

An epidemiologic investigation found a 17.5% prevalence of psychogenic polydipsia in 241 hospitalized psychiatric patients. A randomly selected sample of 10 polydipsic patients revealed such associated disorders as sporadic convulsive seizures, comatose states, hydronephrosis, enuresis/urinary incontinence, projectile type vomiting, malnutrition and, in one case, cardiomegaly and edema. Psychogenic polydipsia is a frequently overlooked disorder, and the somatic consequences of the excessive fluid intake are usually ascribed to other causes.

Rule-violating behavior of delinquent and non-delinquent youth in games.

Viewing delinquency as rule-violating behavior resulting from a failure in the socialization process, it was assumed that delinquents and non-delinquents would demonstrate differences in the frequency of rule-violating behavior, and in reactions to rule-violating behavior in games. Fifty delinquent and fifty non-delinquent members of ten, ongoing neighborhood peer groups were rated by group workers in relation to their rule-violating behavior in group activities and games as it occurred in the natural group setting. It was found that there were no differences between the two groups on the boys' willingness to participate in games, their conformity to peer expectations, and their choice of competitive games. Delinquents were found to violate rules more often, to react more aggressively to rule violations of others, and to deny more often, their responsibility for rule violations. Implications as to the importance of games in socialization and their potential use in treatment are discussed.

[Gastric secretory inhibitors improve the visibility of gastric mucosal detail in barium studies of the stomach: a controlled clinical trial (author's transl)].

In a controlled randomized clinical trial the effect of the secretory inhibitors Cimetidine and pirenzepine on the visibility of the areolar gastricae in barium studies of the upper gastrointestinal tract was examined. Both drugs improved the radiological imaging of the areolar tidine reduced the amount of radiologically visible fasting gastric contents. Thus, factors other than the volume alone of gastric secretions appear to play a major role in the quality of imaging of the gastric fine relief.
