Effectiveness of grief interventions in underrepresented regions: a systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis.

Background: Most evidence on grief and bereavement interventions originates from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) populations, raising concerns about the generalizability and cultural relevance of existing findings in diverse global contexts. Individuals confronted with the death of a close person, particularly in cases of sudden or potentially traumatic loss, may be at increased risk of adverse psychological and physical health outcomes, highlighting the importance of effective interventions. This study aimed to synthesize evidence on the effectiveness of grief interventions in underrepresented regions.Method: A systematic search of Web of Science, APA PsycInfo, and Scopus, supplemented by manual reference checks, identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) targeting bereaved individuals in underrepresented regions. Meta-analyses were conducted to estimate overall and subgroup effects based on control type, loss type, and intervention characteristics.Results: Fourteen RCTs comprising 1122 participants were included. Grief interventions demonstrated a significant moderate-to-large effect compared to control conditions (SMD = -0.74, 95% CI [-1.01, -0.47]). Substantial heterogeneity was observed (I² = 77%). No significant subgroup differences were identified.Conclusion: Grief interventions show promising effectiveness across diverse cultural and geographical contexts. However, the limited and heterogeneous evidence base highlights the need for more high-quality RCTs and for the development of culturally sensitive and contextually grounded approaches to mental health care in underrepresented regions.

Complete mitochondrial genomes of eight cyclophyllidean tapeworms: genome pattern and phylogenetic analysis.

Cyclophyllidean tapeworms are widespread parasites of significant medical and veterinary importance. However, mitochondrial (mt) genomic resources for cyclophyllideans from China, particularly those recovered from wildlife hosts, remain comparatively limited. In this study, we sequenced and characterized the complete mt genomes of eight cyclophyllidean isolates collected from diverse wild and domestic hosts in China, including two Hymenolepis sp. isolates and two Raillietina sp. isolates from China, and four additional isolates of previously sequenced Taenia species. The circular mt genomes ranged from 13,387 to 14,021 bp in length, encoding 36 typical genes with variable non-coding regions. Comparative analysis revealed highly conserved gene composition and mostly conserved mt architecture, with localized rearrangement patterns detected among the cyclophyllidean lineages examined. In particular, all sampled Taeniidae exhibited a consistent trnL1-trnS2 arrangement, whereas the examined non-Taeniidae families showed the trnS2-trnL1 arrangement, confirming and extending, across additional wildlife-associated isolates, a previously proposed family-associated gene-order marker within Cyclophyllidea. Phylogenetic analyses based on concatenated amino acid sequences of the 12 protein-coding genes placed the eight isolates within their expected families, in topologies broadly consistent with previous mitogenomic studies. These data provide additional Chinese mitogenomic references, especially for underrepresented wildlife-associated isolates, and support family-associated gene-order patterns in Cyclophyllidea.

Forensic taphonomy in fluvial water: A systematic review.

Human remains are frequently recovered from fluvial (lotic) water environments. Rivers, streams, canals and other flowing water bodies pose distinct challenges in forensic practice, particularly due to their current. Compared to other aquatic contexts, fluviatile taphonomy is underrepresented in the forensic literature and the last comprehensive summary was written over a decade ago. Therefore, a systematic review was performed to collect and summarise the current knowledge in forensics about fluvial taphonomy, including decomposition of remains, transport characteristics, search, postmortem submersion interval (PMSI) estimation, taphonomic alterations, and differences to other water bodies. 92 reports met the inclusion criteria for this review, most of them showed a moderate risk of bias. Their main findings were summarised and two major challenges identified. First, predictions about fluvial transport of human bodies pose a tremendous issue in forensic practice, leading to later detection and lower recovery rate of remains, complicating various subsequent analyses. Second, PMSI estimations are difficult particularly due to variable environmental conditions in fluviatile systems. Recommendations for future research in the area of fluvial forensic taphonomy include that case-related data such as the detailed decomposition state and river characteristics need to be made available. More standardised research protocols are required for a facilitated comparison between studies, environments and regions. This review provides forensic practitioners with a comprehensive, updated resource for the investigation of fluvial remains. It also guides future research towards a more efficient practice to build the basis for a broader, more robust and comprehensive synthesis, subsequently supporting analyses in forensic casework.

Solutions for engaging priority populations in HIV cure research: a hybrid Delphi consensus-building process.

BACKGROUND: To achieve consensus on barriers and strategies to improve the engagement of three priority populations - Black and Latino/a/x individuals, cisgender women, and transgender women in HIV cure research. METHODS: We assembled a panel of 54 experts assigned to six groups in a hybrid Delphi process: (1) HIV community members, (2) biomedical researchers, (3) medical providers, (4) funders and private industry members, (5) bioethicists and regulators, and (6) social scientists. Over 18 months, we conducted four iterative survey rounds and three group discussions to identify barriers and strategies to arrive at a consensus on how to engage these priority populations in HIV cure research. RESULTS: For Black and Latino/a/x populations, the panellists identified inadequate outreach and a lack of accessible educational information as primary barriers and emphasised community-driven engagement and partnerships with trusted leaders as key strategies. For cisgender women, logistical hurdles, caregiving responsibilities and time constraints were identified as major barriers, with flexible trial designs and equitable compensation proposed as solutions. For transgender women, the lack of transgender-focused research design, including misrepresentation and exclusion, was identified as a key barrier, while centring transgender-specific needs in study design achieved consensus as the most effective strategy. CONCLUSION: Among all four priority populations, investment in outreach, engagement along the research process, better integration of health needs with research, and enhanced incentives are not novel ideas, but remain obviously ignored in a way that has led to underrepresentation of people in HIV cure research, who carry the greatest burden of HIV in the U.S. SUMMARY: This paper uses a hybrid Delphi process to identify and reach consensus on key barriers and strategies to engage underrepresented groups: Black and Latino/a/x individuals, cisgender women, and transgender women in HIV cure research across the United States.

Advancing nursing education through social and emotional learning: A systematic review guided by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning framework.

BACKGROUND: With Generation Z entering the nursing workforce in growing numbers, strengthening social and emotional learning is critical for academic success, professional adaptation, and safe practice. However, the existing evidence remains fragmented because of varied interventions and inconsistent approaches. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review examined (1) the social and emotional learning essential for nursing students and nurses within the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning framework, (2) their impact on educational and clinical outcomes, and (3) implications for advancing nursing education and practice. METHODS: Following Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, five international (PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane) and three Korean (RISS, KoreaMed, KMBASE) databases were searched up to June 2025. Eighteen studies involving 2,952 participants met the inclusion criteria, including quasi-experimental quantitative studies, descriptive quantitative studies, qualitative studies, and mixed-methods studies. The methodological quality of the included studies was appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. RESULTS: Within the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning framework, relationship skills and self-management were the most frequently studied competencies, emphasizing teamwork, communication, and stress regulation. Self-awareness and social awareness were underexplored, despite their importance in empathy, resilience, and reflective practice. Responsible decision-making was the least studied competency, despite its importance in ethical reasoning. Social and emotional learning was consistently associated with enhanced adaptation, communication, leadership, relationships, and clinical performance. Effective strategies included blended learning, simulation, reflective activities, and mentorship, which are aligned with Generation Z's learning preferences. CONCLUSION: Although social and emotional learning integration is associated with improvements in educational and clinical outcomes in nursing, current research has largely centered on relational and stress-related competencies while underrepresenting responsible decision-making. To cultivate reflective, empathetic, and ethically grounded nurses, curricula should integrate social and emotional learning through a balanced and structured approach. Targeting depression before it starts: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis of preventive interventions in young adults from randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Young adulthood is a high-risk period for major depressive disorder (MDD) onset yet is underrepresented in prevention research. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of psychosocial preventive interventions in adults aged 18-25&#xa0;years, focusing on symptom reduction, medium- and long-term effects, and MDD onset. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO: CRD42024625481) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of psychosocial preventive interventions for depression in young adults (18-25) published up to April 15, 2025. Between-group symptom reduction was quantified using Hedges' g and pooled with random-effects models. Outcomes were analyzed at post-intervention, 6-, and 12-month follow-up. Effects on MDD onset were assessed via risk ratio (RR). Risk of bias was assessed with the RoB-2 tool. RESULTS: We included 65 interventions from 58 RCTs (N&#xa0;=&#xa0;11,333; mean age 20.4; 61.6% female), with 92.8% rated high risk of bias. Interventions at post-test reduced depressive symptoms vs. controls (k&#xa0;=&#xa0;65; g&#xa0;=&#xa0;-0.52; 95%CI:-0.70;-0.33; p&#xa0;<&#xa0;0.01), with significant heterogeneity (I2&#xa0;=&#xa0;93.0%). Indicated, guided, and face-to-face interventions outperformed universal, selective, self-guided, and online interventions. Effects on symptomatology were highly heterogeneous and non-significant at 6- (k&#xa0;=&#xa0;8) and 12-month (k&#xa0;=&#xa0;4) follow-up. Four RCTs were identified evaluating MDD onset risk; pooled effects suggested a reduction in MDD onset (RR&#xa0;=&#xa0;0.77; 95%CI:0.61;0.97; p&#xa0;<&#xa0;0.01) though risk of bias was high and samples were highly selective. INTERPRETATION: Psychosocial preventive interventions modestly reduce depressive symptoms at post-test and may lower onset risk in highly selective populations. However, findings remain limited by high risk of bias, scarce data on the long-term sustainability of effects, and unclear mechanisms.

Non-parametric differential methylation analysis characterizes histotype-specific promoter regions in epithelial ovarian cancer.

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is a heterogenous disease with frequent late-stage diagnosis and high mortality rates, for which no reliable screening tests exist. In recent years, epigenetic biomarkers in the form of DNA methylation in CpG-rich regions have gained increased attention in the scientific community due to their robust nature and accessibility, allowing for diagnosis without the need for invasive surgery. In this study, we investigated the aberrant methylation of promoter regions in early stage EOC through non-parametric methods, with the purpose of characterizing candidate epigenetic biomarkers. The approach was used on a cohort of early stage EOC samples, and results were compared to existing programs for differential methylation. Significant regions were then used to construct a CpG panel for stratifying EOC histotypes through predictive classification in external data. Identified promoter regions were highly reproducible across cohorts, and the constructed CpG model stratified histotypes in external cohorts through predictive classification. Comparisons against other DMP and DMR callers showed a degree of homogeneity between results but also revealed promoter regions that were overlooked despite clear signs of aberrant methylation. Finally, EOC histotypes were found to differ in their methylation distribution types, and results indicate that methods sensitive to non-normally distributed data may be poorly suited to compare groups with different distribution types. The non-parametric approach identified aberrantly methylated promoter regions that were highly reproducible across cohorts. Results from predictive classification indicate that these regions may be useful for the purpose of EOC histotype stratification.

An integrated multiscale air quality modelling framework for industrial park pollution: Linking local emissions to regional transport.

Capturing the spatiotemporal distribution of pollutants in industrial parks remains challenging for regional air quality models because of their coarse resolution (3 km), resulting in uncertainties in local emission quantification. To address this, we developed the Integrated Multiscale Air Quality Modelling System for Industry (IAQMS-Industry), coupling the regional Nested Air Quality Prediction Modelling System (NAQPMS) with a city-scale chemical transport model. This framework integrates point-source locations and Gaussian plume dispersion to simulate particulate matter with a diameter smaller than 2.5 micrometres (PM2.5) at 100 m resolution. Applied to the Beijing Yi Zhuang and Tangshan industrial parks and evaluated against observations. The coupled model achieved a normalized mean bias (NMB) ranging from 3.1 % to 6.2 %, improving upon NAQPMS (-16.9 % to -7.7 %). Spatial analysis revealed that coarse regional grids underestimated the PM2.5&#x200b; concentrations at industrial sites by smoothing gradients, whereas IAQMS-Industry successfully resolved spatial patterns. Industrial point emissions accounted for 22.9 %-26.4 % of PM2.5 in the coupled model, which was significantly greater than the regional model estimates of 1.6 %-13.7 %. These findings indicate that regional models overestimate pollutant dispersion processes in industrial parks while underestimating local industrial impacts. By explicitly resolving point-source dynamics and linking them to regional transport, IAQMS-Industry provides a robust tool for designing targeted emission controls in industrial cities and balancing local air quality improvements with minimized regional pollution outflow. This study underscores the necessity of multiscale modelling for accurate source apportionment and informed environmental governance in industrial zones.

Patient-reported outcomes in pediatric regional anesthesia trials: current use and limitations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines the current use and limitations of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in pediatric regional anesthesia research. Despite the increasing emphasis on patient-centered outcomes, existing pediatric outcome assessment frameworks may inadequately capture the pain experience and interference with daily living. RECENT FINDINGS: Across 17 identified randomized controlled trials and 15 ongoing studies, PROM use remains highly variable, with consistent reliance on observational pain scales such as the Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, and Consolability scale and limited incorporation of standardized, longitudinal health-related quality-of-life measures. SUMMARY: Current pediatric PROM frameworks remain fragmented, limiting comprehensive evaluation of recovery. Greater standardization and incorporation of developmentally appropriate, longitudinal outcome measures are needed to better align clinical research with meaningful patient-centered endpoints and to improve assessment of functional and psychosocial recovery.

Three-dimensional source apportionment and quantitative characterization of horizontal and vertical transport fluxes of O3 and its precursors in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, China.

Persistent surface ozone (O3) pollution in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region is driven by coupled precursor emissions and multi-scale transport, yet its altitude-dependent transport and source contributions remain insufficiently quantified. Here we integrated the Weather Research and Forecasting and the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions with the Ozone Source Apportionment Technology and a quantitative transport-flux framework to characterize three-dimensional source apportionment and horizontal/vertical fluxes of O3, Volatile Organic Compounds&#x200c; (VOCs), and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) across dynamic meteorological scenarios. Simulations showed that VOCs and NOx were dominated by local emissions near the surface (73.61 %-82.18 %), whereas surface O3 was primarily controlled by regional transport, with local contributions of only 11.01 %-13.75 %. Notably, the transport dominance further strengthened with altitude, exceeding 93 % at 1.8 km. Industrial and transportation emissions together contributed more than 75 % of precursor emissions and account for approximately 80 % of O3 formation, while favorable/unfavorable meteorological years modulated long-range transport efficiency and the vertical distribution of contributions. Horizontal flux analysis highlighted three major pathways (Northwest-Southeast, Southeast-Northwest, and Southwest-Northeast), with Shijiazhuang serving as a critical pollutant "sink" across altitude layers. Vertical fluxes revealed an altitude transition near 600 m: net downward transport dominated below 600 m, whereas enhanced summer convection promoted upward transport above 600 m. These results support altitude-dependent, scenario-specific strategies for coordinated regional O3 mitigation in the BTH region.

Single-slice Functional Lung MRI During Metronome-Paced Tachypnea Detects Changes in Regional Ventilation Dynamics After a Single Dose of Dual Bronchodilator Treatment in COPD.

Dual long-acting bronchodilators are a standard treatment in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), aimed at alleviating dyspnea, improving exercise tolerance, and preventing exacerbations. Metronome-paced tachypnea (MPT) offers a feasible alternative to exercise testing for the evaluation of dynamic hyperinflation (DH) in COPD. Because MPT can be performed during MRI, its combination with single-slice phase-resolved functional lung (PREFUL) MRI provides a promising approach to investigate changes in regional ventilation dynamics induced by DH. This approach was evaluated in a randomized, investigator-blinded, placebo-controlled, single-dose (SD) crossover trial with a two-week extension of once daily dual bronchodilator medication, in which patients with stable COPD underwent PREFUL MRI during resting tidal breathing (RTB) and during MPT. During RTB, no significant improvements in MRI-derived parameters were observed after SD treatment compared with placebo. During MPT, however, regional ventilation, flow-volume loop correlation, its defect percentage, and end-expiratory lung area improved significantly after SD treatment compared to the placebo scan (all p&#x2009;<&#x2009;0.02). After multi-dose treatment, five out of six measured parameters improved during MPT, when compared to the baseline scan without bronchodilator treatment (all p&#x2009;<&#x2009;0.03). In contrast to RTB, PREFUL MRI during MPT was able to detect changes in COPD patients already after SD treatment. The combination of MPT and PREFUL MRI represents a promising method to evaluate the effects of dual bronchodilators on regional ventilation dynamics and hyperinflation.

Access to maternity services for women asylum seekers and refugees: A transnational document analysis of international, European regional, and United Kingdom governance.

Women asylum seekers and refugees face persistent barriers to maternity care (antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care) across high-income countries, yet the upstream governance shaping access remains under-examined. Although legally distinct, both groups share protection-seeking experiences and are addressed jointly in governance documents. This study examined and synthesised how international (macro), European regional (meso), and United Kingdom (UK, micro) governance documents frame and operationalise maternity service access. Sixty-four documents were analysed using the READ framework. Inductive analysis of macro and meso documents identified six access dimensions: universal coverage; cultural and linguistic adaptation; rights-based approaches; multi-agency collaboration; data, monitoring and accountability; and quality of care. These dimensions structured assessment of UK governance, with jurisdictions rated strong, moderate or weak. Alignment was fragmented: Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland exempted asylum seekers from charging, whereas England retained charging provisions. Multi-agency collaboration was consistently articulated, yet none of the 35 UK government documents focused on maternity access for this population, and none required outcome monitoring disaggregated by asylum or refugee status. UK governance appears coordinated in form but fragmented in substance. UK-wide minimum standards and routine recording of these data, with safeguards against immigration-related use, could strengthen coherence and accountability and improve visibility of inequities.

Regional and statewide hysterectomy-corrected endometrial cancer incidence and five-year relative survival in Texas.

BACKGROUND: Rising endometrial cancer (EC) incidence nationwide, particularly among Hispanic women, and high prevalence of risk factors such as obesity and comorbidities in Texas, motivated us to estimate EC incidence rates (IRs) and survival by age (<50 years/ early-onset, &#x2265;50 years/late-onset), race-ethnicity (Non-Hispanic-White [NHW], -Black [NHB], Hispanic), histology (endometrioid, non-endometrioid), and area-based socioeconomic (SES) factors across Texas Health Service Regions (HSRs). STUDY DESIGN: Between 2000 and 2019, a total of 42,571 women (20-79 years) with EC were reported from Texas within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program. IRs and 5-year relative survival were calculated using SEER*Stat. IRs were corrected for hysterectomy using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data. RESULTS: Statewide EC IRs rose from 38.5 (2000-2009) to 44.5 (2010-2019), with the highest increase in the Upper-South (42.6 to 53.8). Across HSRs, Upper-South consistently had higher IRs among women <&#x202f;50 (13.9) and &#x2265;&#x202f;50 years (112.7). Among those <&#x202f;50 years, Hispanics had the highest IRs (12.4), predominantly endometrioid tumors, whereas in women &#x2265;&#x202f;50 years, NHB had the highest IRs (119.2) with a large proportion of non-endometrioid tumors. IRs were higher in areas with lower poverty, and higher education, income, and urbanization. Associations with unemployment were mixed. Worse survival outcomes were observed among NHBs, non-endometrioid, advanced-stage, and lower SES. Central Texas had more favorable survival outcomes compared to other HSR. CONCLUSION: EC IRs and survival rates in Texas largely mirror national trends, with regional differences likely reflecting sociodemographic and histologic distributions.

Quantifying the combined effects of semi-closed terrain and monsoon on PM2.5 and O3 pollution aggregation in the North China Plain.

The North China Plain (NCP) and its surrounding regions represent one of the key priority areas for air pollution control. As anthropogenic emissions decline significantly, the effect of terrain and meteorology on air pollution pattern has become increasingly prominent, particularly given the NCP's unique semi-closed terrain and East Asian monsoon dynamics. However, quantitative characterization of terrain-dominated blocking effects remains unexplored. Here we quantitatively assess the blocking effects of mountains and terrain-coupled meteorological factors on air pollutant dispersion. We find the NCP on the eastern side of the Taihang Mountains showed high PM2.5 and O3 pollution levels, with winter PM2.5 and summer O3 high-value zones showing opposite north-south aggregation patterns. PM2.5 and O3 concentrations were highest in plains, followed by platforms, hills, and finally mountains. Within the 120-km buffer zones of the typical mountains in the NCP and its surrounding regions, PM2.5 and O3 concentrations increased initially with altitude but then decreased markedly above a threshold altitude. Above the threshold altitude, mountain blocking effects became dominant. The effective blocking altitudes of typical mountains in the NCP and its surrounding regions ranged between 22 and 929 m for winter PM2.5 pollution, and between 19 and 1060 m for summer O3 pollution. The Terrain-Wind Close Index indicates that the terrain-coupled East Asian monsoon showed stronger blocking effects on PM2.5 dispersion in southern NCP during winter and on O3 diffusion in northern NCP during summer, matching observed high-pollution zones. This study offers key insights for regional joint air pollution mitigation strategies, as well as regional pollution assessment.

Regional genomic analysis of lineage distribution and transferable multidrug resistance among chicken-associated Salmonella Kentucky isolates in China.

Salmonella enterica serovar Kentucky is an important multidrug-resistant foodborne pathogen in the poultry meat supply chain. Although recent broader genomic studies have elucidated the population structure and epidemiological significance of major lineages in China (e.g., ST198 and ST314), the regional dynamics within local poultry supply chains remain insufficiently characterized. In this study, 31 chicken meat-derived isolates from Shanghai and 39 publicly available genomes from China were analyzed using antimicrobial susceptibility testing, whole-genome sequencing, phylogenetic analysis, conjugation experiments, and complete sequencing of representative plasmids. This enabled a systematic characterization of the molecular epidemiological features of the population and the mechanisms underlying resistance dissemination. Population genomic analysis revealed a lineage composition markedly different from the global epidemiological pattern: ST314 was the predominant sequence type among the Shanghai chicken-derived isolates (74.2%), whereas the internationally recognized high-risk clone ST198 accounted for only 25.8% of the local isolates. However, risk stratification analysis indicated that although ST198 was detected less frequently, it carried a significantly greater burden of acquired resistance genes and therefore represented a higher-risk resistant lineage. Functional and structural validation further elucidated the molecular basis of resistance dissemination within this high-risk lineage. Conjugation experiments confirmed the co-transfer of a multidrug resistance module carrying blaTEM-1 and blaCTX-M-267 to the recipient strain Escherichia coli J53. Complete plasmid analysis revealed that these two &#x3b2;-lactam resistance genes were co-localized on a 242-kb transferable plasmid flanked by Tn1331, Tn3, and multiple transposase-associated elements, thereby providing a structural basis for their horizontal transfer. This study provides important molecular epidemiological evidence for lineage-specific surveillance and risk-stratified control of resistant Salmonella in the poultry meat supply chain and further underscores the need for continuous monitoring of mobile genetic elements within a One Health framework.

High-frequency contralesional dorsal premotor cortex and low-frequency contralesional primary motor cortex rTMS in subacute stroke with severe upper limb impairment: comparable motor outcomes and differential regional degree centrality changes.

BACKGROUND: The contralesional dorsal premotor cortex has been proposed as a potential neuromodulatory target for patients with severe upper limb impairment due to subacute ischemic stroke. This proof-of-concept study aimed to compare behavioral outcomes and resting-state neuroimaging findings between high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the contralesional dorsal premotor cortex and guideline-supported low-frequency stimulation over the contralesional primary motor cortex. METHODS: In this randomized trial, 46 patients with severe upper limb impairment in the subacute stage after ischemic stroke were randomly assigned to receive either high-frequency rTMS over the contralesional dorsal premotor cortex or low-frequency rTMS over the contralesional primary motor cortex. Low-frequency stimulation over the contralesional primary motor cortex served as an evidence-supported active comparator for poststroke upper limb motor recovery. Stimulation was administered five times per week for two weeks using magnetic resonance imaging-guided neuronavigation. All participants received concurrent standard rehabilitation therapy. The primary outcome was the Fugl-Meyer Assessment for Upper Extremity. Secondary outcomes included the Arm Subscore of the Motricity Index, the Hong Kong version of the Functional Test for the Hemiplegic Upper Extremity, the Modified Barthel Index, and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging-derived degree centrality. RESULTS: Both groups showed significant improvements in the primary and secondary behavioral measures (p&#x202f;<&#x202f;0.01), with no significant between-group differences in the magnitude of change (p&#x202f;>&#x202f;0.05). In neuroimaging analyses, patients receiving high-frequency rTMS over the contralesional dorsal premotor cortex showed significantly greater degree centrality changes in the ipsilesional middle occipital gyrus, contralesional medial superior frontal gyrus, and contralesional middle frontal gyrus than those receiving low-frequency rTMS over the contralesional primary motor cortex (p&#x202f;<&#x202f;0.05). Within the high-frequency stimulation group, degree centrality changes in the ipsilesional middle occipital gyrus were positively correlated with improvements in the Fugl-Meyer Assessment for Upper Extremity (r&#x202f;=&#x202f;0.619, false discovery rate-corrected p&#x202f;=&#x202f;0.018). CONCLUSIONS: High-frequency rTMS over the contralesional dorsal premotor cortex produced behavioral improvements comparable to guideline-supported low-frequency rTMS over the contralesional primary motor cortex, without establishing superiority or formal non-inferiority. Exploratory neuroimaging analyses showed greater degree centrality changes in the ipsilesional middle occipital gyrus after high-frequency premotor stimulation, and these changes correlated with upper-limb motor improvement. These findings support further investigation of contralesional dorsal premotor cortex-targeted high-frequency rTMS for severe subacute post-stroke upper limb impairment. Antarctic Peninsula soil carbon stock and efflux: A complex interplay of soil properties and heavy metals.

This study establishes a quantitative framework for understanding surface soil carbon dynamics and ecosystem connectivity in Fildes Peninsula and Ardley Island, King George Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctic Peninsula. The mean soil organic carbon (SOC) stock across all study sites was 1.10 &#xb1; 1.93 kg C/m&#xb2;. Restricting net carbon balance analysis to Fildes Peninsula, where soil respiration (Rs) data were available, yielded a site-specific SOC stock of 0.45 &#xb1; 0.45 kg C/m&#xb2;. Scaling Rs to a realistic 120-day active season and assuming stable SOC stocks resulted in estimated annual carbon loss of 15 g C/(m2&#xb7;yr), equivalent to 3.3 % of standing SOC. Comprehensive sensitivity analyses spanning plausible winter respiration (0 %-20 % of summer rates) and annual change in SOC stocks (-1 %-2 %) consistently supported a net carbon sink, with turnover rates constrained to 3.3 %/yr-4.7 %/yr. Principal component analysis showed that ornithogenic processes as the dominant control on SOC, total nitrogen (TN), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and cadmium (Cd) provide a clear multivariate signature of marine-derived nutrient, while Pb was decoupled from this gradient and associated instead with fine-particle size controls. These results reveal dual but independent drivers of soil metal enrichment in this region. Despite their limited spatial extent, ornithogenic soils store disproportionately large carbon pools. Overall, this integrated analysis reveals how marine-terrestrial subsidies regulate Antarctic carbon cycling and provides a quantitative and reproducible framework for assessing carbon dynamics under ongoing climate change.

Unraveling the c-Myc-CASC19/HDAC1-NPM1 epigenetic axis: A novel regulatory circuitry and therapeutic target in gastric carcinogenesis.

Mounting evidence implicates long non-coding RNA cancer susceptibility candidate 19 (CASC19) in the pathogenesis of diverse malignancies. However, its functional role and molecular mechanisms in gastric cancer (GC) remain elusive. Herein, we identified a novel 717-bp transcript isoform of CASC19 in GC cells. This study aimed to delineate the biological functions and underlying mechanisms of this novel CASC19 transcript in GC pathogenesis. CASC19 was significantly upregulated in GC tissues and cell lines, correlating with adverse clinicopathological features and poor prognosis in GC patients. Functional investigations demonstrated that CASC19 overexpression potentiated GC cell proliferation, metastasis, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition, whereas CASC19 knockdown attenuated these malignant phenotypes and suppressed tumorigenesis in xenograft models. Mechanistically, CASC19 functioned as a molecular scaffold by recruiting histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) to the nucleophosmin 1 (NPM1) promoter. This recruitment sustained H3K27 deacetylation, thereby transcriptionally repressing NPM1 promoter activity and accelerating gastric carcinogenesis. Crucially, Depletion of HDAC1 or NPM1 partial rescued CASC19-mediated oncogenic effects. Intriguingly, the transcription factor c-Myc was found to transcriptionally activate CASC19 through direct binding to its promoter region. Collectively, our findings indicate that the c-Myc-CASC19/HDAC1-NPM1 axis acts as a potential prognostic biomarker candidate for GC and may represent a therapeutic vulnerability worthy of future investigation.
