Residency selection process: description and annotated bibliography.

Specialty and residency training choices of medical students will affect the quality, mode, and geographic location of their future practice; the importance of such choices should not be underestimated. Medical school librarians have largely ignored the opportunity to interact with both medical students and medical school officials in providing sources needed to assist these career decisions, and for the most part students and administrators have ignored the opportunity to utilize the medical library in this process. This article presents an overview of the processes and procedures in which third- and fourth-year medical students are involved in selecting specialty and residency training, and provides a detailed description of the resources which the medical student should consult in order to make thoughtful, informed career decisions. The article urges medical school advisers and medical librarians to work as partners in providing information on specialty and residency selection to medical students.

[Suicidal behavior in adolescents. Risk factors (bibliography review and descriptive-analytical study)].

UNLABELLED: In the United States suicide is the third cause of death among adolescents. Suicidal behavior has increased a hundred percent over the last three decades; it is one of the most frequent psychiatric emergencies and the first cause of admission among inpatients between 15 and 24 years. OBJECTIVE: This paper is divided in two parts. The first one is made up of a review about risk factors for suicidal behavior in adolescents. The objective of the second part study is to estimate the frequency of risk factors for suicidal behavior in a sample of inpatients and to correlate them with high lethality suicidal attempts. METHOD: This is a retrospective, observational, descriptive, analytic transversal study based on information from 23 medical records. Variables were processed by bivariated analysis; relative risk was obtained considering high lethality suicidal attempt as dependent variable. RESULTS: Statistically significant relationships were found between high lethality suicidal attempt and no Axe II diagnosis and with the appearance of hopelessness. DISCUSSION: Suicidal attempts in adolescents with an Axe II diagnosis could be more related to self-harming than to a wish to die. Hopelessness can be considered an independent variable that determines the lethality of the suicidal attempt.

PIRSF: family classification system at the Protein Information Resource.

The Protein Information Resource (PIR) is an integrated public resource of protein informatics. To facilitate the sensible propagation and standardization of protein annotation and the systematic detection of annotation errors, PIR has extended its superfamily concept and developed the SuperFamily (PIRSF) classification system. Based on the evolutionary relationships of whole proteins, this classification system allows annotation of both specific biological and generic biochemical functions. The system adopts a network structure for protein classification from superfamily to subfamily levels. Protein family members are homologous (sharing common ancestry) and homeomorphic (sharing full-length sequence similarity with common domain architecture). The PIRSF database consists of two data sets, preliminary clusters and curated families. The curated families include family name, protein membership, parent-child relationship, domain architecture, and optional description and bibliography. PIRSF is accessible from the website at http://pir.georgetown.edu/pirsf/ for report retrieval and sequence classification. The report presents family annotation, membership statistics, cross-references to other databases, graphical display of domain architecture, and links to multiple sequence alignments and phylogenetic trees for curated families. PIRSF can be utilized to analyze phylogenetic profiles, to reveal functional convergence and divergence, and to identify interesting relationships between homeomorphic families, domains and structural classes.

[Standardization of the terminology of the academic medical centers and biomedical research centers, in the English language, for journal article sending].

PURPOSE: To suggest a standardization, in the English language, the formatting of the citation of the research centers. METHODS: From three more recent publications of the first 20 journals available in Brazilian Portal of Scientific Information - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), with bigger factor of impact during the year of 2004, according of information in ISI Web of Knowledge Journal Citation Reports database in biennium 2004-2005, had extracted the formats of citations of the research centers. An analogy to the institutional hierarchie step of the Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP) was carried out, and the formats most frequent, in the English language, had been adopted as standard to be suggested to cite the research centers for sending articles. RESULTS: In relation to the citation "Departamento", was standardized "Department of ..." (being "..." the name in English of the Department), to the citation "Programa de Pós-Graduação" "... Program", "Disciplina" "Division of ...", "Orgãos, Grupos e Associações" "... Group ", "Setor" "Section of...", "Centro" "Center for ...", "Unidade" "... Unit ", "Instituto" "Institute of ...", "Laboratório" "Laboratory of ..." and "Grupo" "Group of ...".

Alcohol and drug use among displaced persons: an overview.

This paper provides a brief introduction to current research concerned with alcohol and drug use, misuse, and treatment among displaced persons, including immigrants, refugees, and homeless individuals. Among the topics examined are theoretical issues related to our understanding of substance use processes among displaced populations, methodological considerations, and directions for future research. The review is followed by an annotated bibliography of recent work related to this topic.
