An exploratory analysis of decision-making in population affinity estimation among forensic anthropology practitioners in the United States.

Population affinity estimation in forensic anthropology often involves the integration of multiple pieces of information, including visual (nonmetric) and metric data. This study examines how practitioners interpret and synthesize visual and metric information and their decision-making processes. A Qualtrics survey was developed using two cases: Case 1 presented clear nonmetric signal but ambiguous metric signal, while Case 2 showed more ambiguous nonmetric signal but clear metric signal. Practitioners were asked to estimate population affinity based on visual assessment, Fordisc data, and provide a final, integrated assessment. A total of 22 valid survey responses were received, with the majority of survey respondents reporting more than 10 years of forensic anthropology experience and holding a PhD degree. Results showed that there is substantial variability in Fordisc use and interpretation. Across both cases, participants synthesized conflicting visual and metric information, converged toward the stronger signal, and came to more consistent final estimates relative to the more ambiguous input. These findings highlight variability in practitioner decision-making but suggest that integration of nonmetric and metric information in population affinity estimation can moderate decision-making uncertainty. The results have implications for forensic anthropology education, training, and proficiency testing.

Privacy, security, and reliability risks of artificial intelligence in healthcare: a systematic review of empirical evidence.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into healthcare information systems, supporting clinical decision-making, imaging analysis, and predictive modeling. While these applications offer operational and clinical benefits, they also introduce emerging risks to patient privacy, data security, and system reliability. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review empirical evidence on privacy breaches, security vulnerabilities, and misuse associated with AI applications in healthcare settings. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Digital Library were searched for empirical studies published between January 2015 and November 2025 that evaluated AI use or misuse in clinical diagnosis, treatment, or decision-making. Two reviewers independently screened studies and extracted data using a standardized form. Findings were synthesized narratively due to heterogeneity in study designs, AI methods, and reported outcomes. RESULTS: Of 7,285 records identified through database searches and 205 through citation screening, 22 empirical studies met the inclusion criteria, spanning multiple clinical domains and data modalities, predominantly medical imaging applications. Five recurring threat categories were identified: patient re-identification, membership inference, unauthorized access and adversarial exploitation, input manipulation, and misuse or overinterpretation of AI outputs. Across studies, AI models were shown to encode latent biometric signals across diverse data types, limiting the effectiveness of traditional anonymization and synthetic data approaches. Adversarial attacks and input manipulation were also shown to compromise diagnostic performance and system integrity. CONCLUSION: This systematic review provides empirical evidence suggesting that contemporary AI systems in healthcare introduce privacy and security risks that may challenge traditional assumptions about data protection. These findings underscore the need for privacy- and security-by-design approaches and governance frameworks that address risks across the AI lifecycle.

Pictographs: feasibility and acceptability of a novel method of newborn identification to reduce wrong-patient errors in the NICU.

Wrong-patient errors cause serious harm in newborns. These errors involve ordering and administering tests, procedures, medications, and breast milk to an unintended patient. Newborns receiving care in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are at particularly high risk. Although more distinct newborn naming conventions as recommended by the Joint Commission significantly reduce wrong-patient orders, name similarities among multiple-birth infants and truncation of differentiating information in some electronic health record (EHR) systems contribute to this persistent increased risk. Accordingly, novel newborn identifiers are urgently needed. We propose Pictographs - images that are appealing, recognizable, and appropriate - to serve as visual identifiers for newborns in NICUs. Pictographs are selected by caregivers, uploaded into the EHR, and displayed at bedside. As part of a multicenter randomized controlled trial assessing effectiveness of Pictographs to prevent wrong-patient order errors, we initially evaluated feasibility and acceptability of Pictographs at two study sites. Pictographs as novel visual identifiers for newborns in the NICU were generally well received by caregivers and clinicians, and the vast majority of caregivers selected a Pictograph for their infant(s), which was posted at the bedside and uploaded into the EHR. Ordering clinicians - the primary target of the intervention to prevent wrong-patient errors - recognized the potential for Pictographs to provide a visual cue when placing orders, particularly for multiple-birth infants. Here, we describe the rationale, implementation, framework, feasibility, usefulness, and acceptability of Pictographs among key stakeholders. If found effective for preventing wrong-patient errors, Pictographs could be adopted as a patient safety solution in hospitals worldwide.

Differences in Radiological Risk Perceptions Following Online and In-Person Workshops.

Nuclear energy is widely regarded as a critical part of the pathway toward a secure, low-carbon electricity grid, yet long-term management of used nuclear fuel remains a persistent challenge. Although technically viable options for interim and consolidated storage exist, public concern and community opposition - rooted in historical distrust and risk perception - continue to complicate siting decisions. In response, recent federal efforts have emphasized collaboration-based approaches and community engagement, though empirical evidence on the effectiveness of different engagement strategies remains limited. This study examines how the structure and delivery of community engagement influence changes in public attitudes toward hosting interim used nuclear fuel storage facilities. Using survey data from 13 educational workshops around the United States, we evaluate: (1) the inclusion of trust-building content prior to technical content, and (2) engagement format, comparing online and in-person workshops. Analyses focus on participant changes in perceptions of safety, risk, and support for hosting, using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test and other non-parametric hypothesis tests on surveys conducted before and after workshops. Results indicate that workshop participation is associated with some measurable attitude changes, with significant (p < 0.05) differences in response variability for some questions across workshop formats. In particular, when comparing nuclear energy to other clean energy sources, in-person workshop participants are substantially more likely to gain a more favorable opinion of nuclear energy than online participants. These findings contribute empirical evidence on how trust-building and delivery mode shape outcomes in public engagement on complex and contested energy policy issues such as storage of used nuclear fuel.

Identification Matters: How Data Sharing Affects Pupil Honesty and Engagement in Universal School Well-Being Assessments.

PURPOSE: Universal well-being assessments in schools may support early identification of pupils needing mental health support. However, little is known about how privacy and confidentiality concerns influence pupils' acceptability of assessments and willingness to engage authentically. This study examined how hypothetical identification, where responses are linked to pupils and shared with key stakeholders, affects pupils' anticipated honesty and engagement, and whether known help-seeking barriers predict negative responses. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were collected from 12,377 primary (ages 8-10) and secondary pupils (ages 11-17) across 55 schools in England. Pupils reported whether their responses would change if identifiable and shared with school staff, parents/guardians, or external professionals. Responses indicating reduced honesty or likelihood of disengagement were coded as negative. Predictors were examined using mixed-effects logistic regression models, including demographics, school connectedness, and mental well-being. RESULTS: Identification and data sharing influenced pupils' anticipated engagement, particularly in secondary schools. Identification by school staff elicited the highest proportion of negative responses in both phases, whereas external professionals elicited the fewest. Most primary pupils reported they would respond authentically, while a larger proportion of secondary pupils indicated they would respond less honestly or disengage when responses were identifiable and shared. Across primary and secondary samples, low well-being, low school connectedness, and being female were associated with greater likelihood of negative response. DISCUSSION: Pupils' anticipated engagement with well-being assessments is shaped by who accesses their data, with marked developmental differences. Strengthening trust, privacy, and connectedness, and supporting pupils' autonomy, may improve the acceptability and response accuracy.

Associations between smart infusion pump-electronic health record interoperability and healthcare outcomes: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: This study synthesized available evidence on the associations between smart infusion pump-electronic health record (EHR) interoperability and healthcare outcomes. METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Scopus databases identified 901 records, which were imported into Rayyan&#xae; for duplicate removal, independent screening by three reviewers, and resolution of discrepancies. Eligible studies were peer-reviewed, data-driven, and reported associations between smart infusion pump-EHR interoperability and healthcare outcomes. Studies focused solely on technical validation or interoperability prototypes were excluded. A backward citation search identified additional studies. Two reviewers independently extracted and cross-validated study characteristics using standardized templates. Methodological quality was assessed with the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tools. RESULTS: Twenty records of 14 full-text studies and 6 conference proceedings were included. Most records reported positive associations between smart infusion pump-EHR interoperability and outcomes related to safety (e.g., medication administration errors, safety-reported events, pump alerts, and compliance with interoperability and drug library), operational efficiency (e.g., programming and documentation time and technical issues), financial performance (e.g., charges captured, and cost avoided), and user experience domains. Most studies used observational designs, reflecting real-world interoperability implementations, where controlling confounding factors is challenging. Limited reporting of baseline characteristics, pump type, and sample sizes limited comparability across studies. CONCLUSIONS: Smart infusion pump-EHR interoperability was associated with improvements in patient safety, efficiency, charge capture, and user experience, with variable findings across studies. Future research should use rigorous methodologies and standardized measures, examine relationships across outcome domains, assess limitations of pump-EHR interoperability, and evaluate underexplored outcomes, including team communication, cognitive workload, and AI-enabled pumps. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE: Interoperability should be viewed as a component of a broader sociotechnical system, in which technology, user, workflow, clinical content, and organizational practices collectively determine overall effectiveness.

Standardized visual overlays enhance laparoscopic instruction: A mixed-methods evaluation.

Effective communication during laparoscopic procedures is frequently undermined by spatial disorientation and inconsistent terminology between instructors and trainees. This study examined whether standardized visual overlays on endoscopic monitors could enhance communication and learning. We conducted a three-phase mixed-methods study: qualitative observation of 20 laparoscopic teaching cases; a randomized trial of 63 second-year medical students assigned to control, clock, or alphanumeric grid (AG) overlays during three trials of a standardized transfer task; and intraoperative implementation in 44 cases (30 AG, 14 clock) with post-case surveys and qualitative feedback. In simulation, the clock overlay produced the fastest completion times, whereas the AG yielded the lowest error scores, and both overlays outperformed the control. Intraoperatively, the AG was rated higher than the clock for communication clarity, spatial orientation, perceived operative efficiency, and trainee confidence. Standardized visual overlays, particularly the AG, appear to support intraoperative teaching by providing a shared spatial frame of reference.

The return of measles: a dangerous comeback.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Measles has reemerged as a significant global public health threat, with increasing morbidity and mortality associated with declining vaccination rates. This review summarizes current global outbreaks, history of measles, vaccination and elimination status, vaccine hesitancy, and outbreak response and lessons learned highlighting different novel digital epidemiological tools. RECENT FINDINGS: Measles continues to surge worldwide with an estimated 11 million infections in 2024, which is more than prepandemic levels. Developing and developed countries are both facing measles outbreaks, with the United States at risk of losing measles elimination status. Recent studies have showed that worldwide percentages of two-dose measles vaccination were lower than 95% that is required to interrupt measles transmission in all WHO regions. Novel epidemiological tools such as interactive simulators, real-time use of dynamic models, serosurveillance, and others are transforming measles outbreak response and enable earlier outbreak detection, tracking, and targeted public health interventions. SUMMARY: Vaccine hesitancy is one of the top global health threats and developing a tailored evidence-based approach is necessary to establish and maintain measles elimination.

SGLF-Net:Staged Global-to-Local Cross-Scale Fusion Network for Colonoscopic Polyp Segmentation.

Polyp segmentation in colonoscopy images plays a pivotal role in computer-aided medical diagnosis and the early prevention of colorectal cancer. However, existing methods often suffer from performance degradation when confronted with extreme polyp scale variation and polyp boundary ambiguity. To address these challenges, we propose the Staged Global-to-Local Cross-Scale Fusion Network (SGLF-Net), which adopts a novel staged global-to-local learning paradigm to progressively refine segmentation from coarse global semantics to fine-grained local details. Specifically, the Global Semantic Perception Stage integrates a Swin Transformer Encoder and a Dynamic Attentive Decoder (DAD) to construct comprehensive multi-scale contextual representations. The Local Detail Refinement Stage employs an Edge-aware Dynamic Attentive Decoder (E-DAD) to enhance structural fidelity and boundary precision through explicit edge-guided supervision. Furthermore, we introduce the Cross Spatial-Scale Feature Aggregation and Reconstitution (CSSAR) module, equipped with hybrid attention mechanisms, to facilitate efficient semantic structural interaction between the two cascaded stages. Extensive experiments on five public benchmark datasets demonstrate that SGLF-Net consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both segmentation accuracy and boundary preservation.

Published Database Resources for Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine: Update of a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) has been established in the academic context of universities. In recent years, strategies have been developed worldwide to strengthen the role of TCIM in supporting the health of the population. Online databases are a common way for obtaining evidence-based information. This article is an update of a former systematic review from 2010 on published databases resources for TCIM. METHODS: The databases CINAHL, CAMbase, Web of Science, MEDLINE/PubMed, and Google Scholar search engine were searched for databases related to TCIM published in peer-reviewed journals between 2010 and November 2024. All included databases were visited online, and information on the origin, content, and scope of the database was extracted. RESULTS: A total of 6579 articles were identified through the literature search. After exclusion of irrelevant articles, full-text screening of 127 articles yielded 37 new databases. Together with 16 still available old databases, these mainly contained information on herbal therapies (n = 15) and Traditional Chinese Medicine (n = 11) from 18 different countries. Newly identified medicinal plant databases offer various scientific resources such as crude drugs, indigenous plants, and structures for natural and phytochemical components with molecular biological content. CONCLUSIONS: This literature review illustrates the dynamic development in the database landscape over the last 15 years. While the number of bibliographic databases is shrinking, databases in the field of medical plants/herbal therapy content are on the rise, which might be due to advances in plant genomics and molecular biology.

Evaluating the Efficacy of Electronic Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (e-SBIRT) for Gambling: An Online Pilot Randomised Trial.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the efficacy of electronic screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (e-SBIRT) at improving gambling outcomes and increasing help-seeking. METHODS: We conducted a two-arm, randomised online pilot trial (n&#x2009;=&#x2009;83) comparing an e-SBIRT intervention with an active control over 12 weeks. The brief intervention was informed by motivational interviewing and incorporated personalised normative feedback, information provision, and relapse-prevention components. Eligible participants were aged 18 or older, resided in the UK and had scores indicating at least moderate severity gambling. RESULTS: Participants (54 [65.1%] male; mean [SD] age&#x2009;=&#x2009;40.58 [12.75] years, mean [SD] PGSI&#x2009;=&#x2009;7.16 [5.58]) in the e-SBIRT and control conditions showed improvements in gambling harms (p&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.033) and perceived ability to control gambling (p&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.029). No significant effects of condition assignment or condition x time interactions were observed. However, exploratory analyses of individual model coefficients suggested greater improvement in perceived ability to control gambling among participants receiving e-SBIRT at 12 weeks (p&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.043). Exploratory analyses also suggested higher rates of help-seeking at 12-week follow-up among participants receiving e-SBIRT. CONCLUSION: Overall, e-SBIRT did not demonstrate clear advantages over assessment and information provision alone. Further research should prioritise refining intervention components and evaluating SBIRT approaches in settings that better reflect its opportunistic delivery model.

Effectiveness of an educational video for caregivers of children with neurogenic bladder: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The complexity of neurogenic bladder (NGB) management underscores the importance of caregiver education, yet high-quality education materials remain scarce. This study aims to assess the effectiveness and acceptability of an educational video designed to improve knowledge about NGB among caregivers of children with this condition. METHODS: We identified English-speaking caregivers of patients aged zero to 18 years, diagnosed with NGB, without prior major bladder reconstructive surgery, who received care at our institution from 2018 to 2022. Caregivers were randomly assigned into control or video groups using a block randomization model based on age. The control arm completed a six-item knowledge assessment before viewing the video, while the video group watched the video first. All participants rated the video's acceptability. Qualitative analysis of the open-ended responses to the acceptability questionnaire followed principles of thematic analysis. RESULTS: Of 409 eligible participants, 106 (25.9%) completed the study. Video (n = 48) and control (n = 58) groups were demographically similar. In the video group, 64.6% answered correctly all questions in the knowledge questionnaire, compared to 31% in the control group. After adjusting for patient age, caregivers in the video group were more likely to answer any question in the knowledge assessment correctly (relative probability: 1.13, 95% CI [1.06, 1.21], p < 0.01). Evidence for a difference in correct response rate among individual questions was strongest for question #1, which asked about common urological conditions for which NGB patients are at higher risk (95.8% vs. 79.3%, p = 0.01), and question #6, which asked about indications for bladder surgery (87.5% vs. 67.2%, p = 0.01), with the video group more likely to answer correctly for both questions. Qualitative analysis identified three major themes regarding parents' acceptance of the educational video: 1) attitudes towards video content and presentation, 2) usefulness of video as an educational tool, and 3) future directions. CONCLUSIONS: Our study found that an educational video about NGB effectively enhanced parental understanding of the condition and was deemed acceptable by parents as an introductory educational tool. The literature shows the benefit of using technology and visual aids to enhance health literacy for patients and caregivers, a key first step towards optimizing health outcomes for pediatric urologic patients.

Oropouche virus: viral evolution, epidemiological trends, and challenges for control.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In recent years, OROV has emerged as a significant public health threat beyond the Amazon region. Here we review current epidemiological, virological, clinical and ecological knowledge of OROV to inform health practitioners, public health authorities and the scientific community and to facilitate the development of effective control strategies for OROV. RECENT FINDINGS: We describe the epidemiological, virological, ecological and clinical characteristics of OROV, focusing on lessons from the recent expansion, and highlighting needs for control and management of this emerging arbovirus. SUMMARY: This review aims to inform health practitioners, public health authorities and the scientific community of the recent reemergence and expansion of OROV beyond the Amazon Basin. The ecology, epidemiology, virology of OROV and clinical presentations of OROV infection are discussed, and knowledge gaps are identified.

Virtual Reality Education for Hospitalized Pediatric Patients Improves Intrinsic Motivation: A Prospective, Randomized Crossover Study.

Hospitalized children experience educational disruption and reduced motivation during prolonged admissions. Despite the availability of in-hospital schools, many cannot participate due to illness severity or isolation precautions. This pragmatic, randomized crossover trial evaluated whether bedside virtual reality (VR) lessons improve intrinsic motivation among inpatients aged 5 to 25 years unable to attend the hospital school. Participants completed both VR-based educational sessions and standard of care (SOC) conditions on consecutive days. The primary outcome was intrinsic motivation, with secondary outcomes including educational self-efficacy, well-being, self-esteem, and parental experience. Of 156 enrolled patients, 100 were analyzed (mean age 11.5 [SD = 4.1 years]; 43.9% female). Intrinsic motivation scores were higher in the VR condition than SOC (P = .0048), and parental satisfaction was also greater (P = .0008). Bedside VR education represents a feasible, acceptable, and scalable adjunct to inpatient learning, supporting intrinsic motivation and caregiver satisfaction during hospitalization.Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05725395, date first registered November 22, 2022.

Genomic science and the nurse educator's role: Promoting integration from curriculum to clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Registered nurses and nurse educators play a critical role in preparing future clinicians to translate genomic discoveries into practice. However, emerging evidence suggests that both groups may lack sufficient knowledge and confidence in genomics, potentially limiting their ability to teach, mentor, and apply genomics in real-world settings. This gap is especially concerning in Aotearoa New Zealand, where the genomic literacy of nurse educators and clinicians remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to: (1) assess nurse educators' genomic literacy and confidence in teaching genomics; and (2) evaluate registered nurses' knowledge and confidence in applying and teaching genomics in clinical practice. DESIGN: Exploratory descriptive qualitative. SETTING: This study was conducted in the greater Auckland area. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 17 participants were recruited using purposive sampling to ensure a diverse range of perspectives across varying levels of teaching experience, disciplinary backgrounds, and exposure to genomic content. METHODS: Data were collected using semi-structured focus group interviews, a method well-suited for generating in-depth discussion and facilitating interaction among participants with shared professional interests. The collected data were analysed using thematic analysis methods. RESULTS: The findings offer insight into the preparedness of New Zealand's nursing workforce to engage with genomic-informed healthcare and inform strategies for integrating genomics into nursing curricula and continuing professional development. Given the interdisciplinary nature of genomic healthcare, these insights may also be relevant to other health professionals-including midwives, pharmacists, and allied health practitioners-who increasingly encounter genomic information in clinical practice and require foundational competencies to support patient care. CONCLUSION: Addressing this educational gap is critical to ensuring that nurses-key facilitators of patient care and public health-are equipped to deliver safe, equitable, and evidence-based genomic healthcare.

School-based sexual violence prevention: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Sexual violence profoundly affects the health and development of children, adolescents, and young adults, representing a persistent challenge to public policy. This systematic review examined the effectiveness of school-based interventions aimed at prevention. METHODS: Eighteen randomized controlled trials published between 2012 and 2024 were retrieved from four major databases. The programs were implemented in primary, secondary, and higher education settings and targeted children, adolescents, and young adults. RESULTS: The results revealed improvements in knowledge and attitude, particularly regarding consent and awareness, whereas evidence supporting behavioral changes was less frequent and often limited. Methodological limitations, such as short follow-up periods and participant attrition, restricted the assessment of long-term outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: This review highlights the importance of multicomponent, participatory, and culturally sensitive approaches, along with the integration of digital tools and continuous evaluation systems, to strengthen the role of schools as safe and transformative spaces in the prevention of sexual violence. IMPLICATIONS AND CONTRIBUTIONS: This systematic review suggests that school-based interventions hold significant potential for the prevention of sexual violence. It identifies promising strategies and reinforces the importance of culturally sensitive, sustained, evidence-based approaches to ensure learning environments that are safe, protective, and promotive of gender equity.

Nurse-Led Home-Based Mobile Health Cardiac Rehabilitation Program for Patients With Chronic Heart Failure: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

This 12-week randomized controlled trial evaluated a nurse-led mHealth intervention for patients with chronic heart failure, conceptually informed by Riegel's middle-range theory of self-care of chronic illness. The program integrated wearable activity tracking with weekly nurse-led behavioral coaching, reflecting the core self-care processes of monitoring, maintenance, and management. Compared with usual care, the intervention significantly improved daily step count, 6-minute walk distance, metabolic equivalents, and left ventricular ejection fraction. Findings highlight the effectiveness of theory-informed, nurse-delivered mHealth strategies in enhancing physical activity and cardiopulmonary function, while underscoring the critical role of advanced practice nurses in home-based chronic disease management.

Beyond Photometric Consistency: Addressing Loss Insensitivity to Depth Noise in Endoscopic Estimation via Error Calibration.

Self-supervised monocular depth estimation in endoscopy is fundamentally constrained by the ill-posed nature of photometric supervision. In this work, we identify a critical yet overlooked cause of this ambiguity: the inherent insensitivity of photometric loss to depth noise. To overcome this intrinsic limitation, we propose Depth Error Calibration Learning (DECL), a two-stage framework that suppresses prediction variance and mitigates residual errors in self-supervised depth estimation. In Stage I (Variance Reduction), a cyclic depth generation strategy produces multiple depth hypotheses for the input image. The per-pixel empirical variance is quantified and integrated into a dedicated variance loss term, which penalizes inconsistent predictions and encourages the network to generate more stable and reliable depth estimates. In Stage II (Bias Calibration), an image-conditioned diffusion model refines the Stage-I depth prior and mitigates structured residuals through iterative denoising, thereby improving geometric accuracy and global consistency. Extensive experiments on three public endoscopic datasets demonstrate that DECL achieves consistent improvements over representative self-supervised monocular depth estimation methods under the evaluated protocols.
