Occupational hepatitis B virus infection in sewage workers.

In a cross-sectional study the employees of a Sewage Company were tested for hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers--HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc--to determine the prevalence of HBV infection and assess the risk of exposed sewage workers becoming infected, so as to evaluate the necessity for appropriate vaccination. The overall prevalence of HBV markers was 43.9% and 6.6% of the employees were HBsAg carriers. In the univariate analysis the prevalence of past and current infection was significantly associated with exposure to sewage (p < 0.001), age (p < 0.001) and with educational level (p < 0.001). However, the logistic regression analysis confirmed that only exposure to sewage was independently associated with positivity for HBV infection (p < 0.001). Workers exposed to sewage should therefore be considered for vaccination against hepatitis B virus.

Coming to grips with a slippery issue: human waste disposal in cold climates.

Problems associated with sewage treatment and human wastes at high latitudes are briefly reviewed. In view of the fact that E. coli and other faecal bacteria can survive in the snow and the coastal waters of polar regions, several methods of how to deal with sewage outfalls in the Arctic and Antarctic are compared and discussed. Some consequences of raw sewage on the health of captive populations of a variety of Antarctic invertebrates and fish are described. Locomotion and respiration appear to be most affected. However, gaps, both in understanding the biological impact of human sewage on polar ecosystems and in finding optimal solutions for the disposal and treatment of the wastes generated by people who live in polar settlements, unfortunately still remain.

A study of combustibility of wastes of two hospitals for determining disposal by incineration.

Determination of quantity, quality and characteristics of the wastes of two hospitals located in the same sector of a class B city was undertaken to review the present dumping method of disposal. On an average 1,424.71 and 224.6 kgs. of five types of wastes as per the moisture content were found daily for seven days in these two hospitals of 1000 general beds, and 600 long stay beds for chest tuberculosis and other Cardiothoracic diseases respectively. The wastes of first hospital had higher combustibility due to its sprawling nature and activities for general patients than that of the second multistoreyed hospital treating special cases. A combustibility analysis of hospital wastes would help to decide whether to adopt incineration for disposal.
