KEYPOINTS: Breathing orally through a tube, 20 subjects compared their sensation of air resistance in the tube with their sensation of resistance breathing through the nose. By changing the internal cross-sectional area in the tube the subjects could choose an oral tube area where they felt the same resistance in the tube as in the nose. Expressed by the chosen oral tube area we had a measurement of the nasal resistance. The method can measure changes in nasal resistance. The method is inexpensive and easy to perform.

The reasons why is it sometimes necessary to resort in paediatric dentistry to the use of conscious sedation with N2O/O2 are explained together with clinical indications and applications. The excellent results obtained with this technique lead to greater cooperation of the child, to a positive emotional contact with dental treatment and the possibility of performing the necessary therapies with greater precision.

Determination of the average uranium contents in several fossil bones was carried out using an improved fission track method. Four standard samples were prepared from silica-gel powder containing known amounts of natural uranium. The powdered fossil bones was fixed on a muscovite detector as well as the standard samples and followed by the neutron irradiation. After cooling, the muscovites were chemically etched with HF-solution to develop the fission tracks. By using standard samples, it was found that a reliable track counting is impossible through the transmission optical microscope in the region over track density of 5 X 10(5) cm-2 because of overlap of fission tracks in each other. In order to improve this situation bearing most of the present muscovites, the observation using the reflection microscope was applied after coating the muscovite surface with the vacuum-evaporated gold film and verified to be extremely efficient to the counting of high track density up to 5 X 10(7) cm-2, which could be no longer to distinguish intrinsic tracks through ordinary microscope. All of the fossil samples were subjected to the track counting through the reflection microscope and after correcting the estimated difference of track ranges between the standard and fossil bone samples the experimental uranium contents were evaluated. The uranium contents in the fossil bones were in the range of 30-460 ppm.

The long term results of 1135 followed up patients after coxarthrosis-operations showed, besides being very effective, typical complications and problems. The bone bearing strength and strain has to be known exactly. In the past there was no method known for quantitative 3dimensional measurement of strength flow in case of biomechanical alteration by operations. The ball deformation system is introduced which was tested on bone models.

A new method of quantifying viability and hatchability of Schistosoma haematobium eggs in urine has been developed. It consists of filtering urine samples through Nytrel filters followed by mercurochrome staining to assist in the detection of viable (motile) miracidia in egg shells, and iodine staining to show hatched miracidia. The new method is compared with two existing techniques for viability/hatchability determination, centrifugation hatching and Nuclepore filtration trypan blue staining. Seventy-three egg positive urine samples are compared; the overall proportions of viable eggs are very close for centrifugation hatching and the new method, but 33% of eggs are lost in centrifugation and 19% of eggs are unclassifiable by Nuclepore filtration trypan blue staining. The main advantages and disadvantages of the new and existing methods are described and discussed; the cheapness, simplicity and ease of performance of the new method make it suitable for large-scale field use. Suggestions for improvements and standardization of the new method are made.
Two new field methods for the detection and quantification of egg viability/hatchability in urinary schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma haematobium have been described recently, and compared with reference methods; the new methods are cheap and simple to use, and may be used singly or together. Before recommending their widespread use in control programmes, repeatability (r) and reproducibility (R) were studied using the guide for determination prepared by the British Standards Institution. Both parameters were found to be low in relation to the mean proportions of eggs viable/hatchable except at very low egg counts, and the new methods can safely be used in PHC-based control programmes.
A new method of hearing testing has been evaluated on a trial basis in the Baby Health Centres of the Sydney Inner Metropolitan and Illawarra Health Regions, of New South Wales. This consists of earlier and more frequent testing with a newly devised range of auditory stimuli presented in front of the child, rather than behind the child. The reason for the change is that earlier detection leads to earlier treatment and improved speech. The new method will assess whether there is adequate hearing for speech development.
