Development of body image, eating disturbance, and general psychological functioning in female adolescents: covariance structure modeling and longitudinal investigations.

OBJECTIVE: Covariance structure modeling (CSM) and longitudinal analyses were used to identify a possible causal sequence for factors that might lead to the development of body image and eating disturbance in adolescent females. METHOD: In Study 1, subjects were measured for level of obesity, perceived weight status, maturational timing, history of being teased about weight/size, body image, eating disturbance, and global psychological functioning. Study 2 was a systematic replication of Study 1 using different indices of body image and a more comprehensive assessment of eating disturbance. In Study 3, subjects from Study 1 were reassessed at a 3-year follow-up. RESULTS: The findings from Study 1 indicated that level of obesity and perceived weight, but not maturational timing, had a directional influence on the other variables. In addition, teasing history was significantly related to the development of body image and eating disturbance. CSM and path analyses with Studies 2 and 3 data generally replicated and extended the results from Study 1. DISCUSSION: These findings offer important insights into possible causal sequences for the development of body image and eating disturbance.

[Interferon beta1-a IM once weekly does not modify general psychological function in the first months after therapy in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis].

INTRODUCTION: Psychological troubles are common in multiple sclerosis but their underlying etiology is still controversial. METHODS: The objective of this open, non comparative, multicenter study was to assess changes in global psychological functioning in new multiple sclerosis patients during the first 3 months of treatment with intramuscular interferon beta-1a once weekly (Avonex). This functioning was rated every 4 weeks with the GAF (Global Assessment Functioning) scale. Depression measured on MADRS (Montgomery & Asberg Depression Rating Scale), clinical global impression (CGI) on patients'psychological status and clinical as well as biological tolerance were also assessed every 4 weeks. RESULTS: Five hundred and ninety-nine patients (71.4 percent women), aged 39.4 years were included. No clinically significant difference in mean GAF score between baseline and the end of the first 3 months of interferon beta-1a IM treatment (main evaluation outcome) was found. Similar results were obtained on MADRS scale. CONCLUSION: No clinically significant alteration of global psychological functioning, including symptoms of depression, was observed during the first 3 months of treatment with interferon beta-1a IM.

Stress and skin diseases in musicians: evaluation of the beck depression scale, general psychologic profile (the brief symptom inventory [BSI]), beck anxiety scale and stressful life events in musicians.

We had previously investigated skin problems of musicians (N = 117) working in a professional orchestra. The results of this survey suggest a significant incidence of occupational and stress-related skin problems in musicians such as hyperhydrosis, lichen planus, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and urticaria. It was thought that emotional factors exacerbate their problems [6]. This article discusses the importance of psychiatric consultations in dermatologic problems.

Tactile-perceptual functioning as a factor in general psychological abilities.

This investigation was designed to study the influence of simple sensory perceptual ability (tactile perception) on various human abilities such as language acquisition, visuo-spatial problem solving, concept formation, motor skills, memory, and learning. Children with documented evidence of impaired brain functions (seizure disorder and corresponding EEG abnormality) and children without evidence or suspicion of neurological impairment were examined. The results suggest that tactile perceptual ability exerts a significant effect on the adequacy of a broad range of human abilities.

Jewishness and well-being: specific identification and general psychological adjustment.

The study examined the relation of nine factors describing the expression of Jewish identification with three scales related to aspects of psychological well-being (Belonging, Optimism and Self-acceptance) among 177 American Jews, ages 22 to 40 years. Regression analyses indicated a small but significant, positive relation between scores on each of the well-being scales and two aspects of Jewish identification, activism in mainstream Jewish organizations (Beta weights .15 to .23) and religiosity (.19 to .21). These expression of Jewishness accounted for 7 to 11% of the variance in reported well-being.
