Acrylic resin denture repair with adhesive resin and metal wires: effects on strength parameters.

The fracture of acrylic resin dentures is an unresolved problem in prosthodontics. In this study one brand of denture base acrylic resin was used to make specimens in the form of strips and maxillary denture bases. The specimens were cut and repaired with one type of an autopolymerizing adhesive resin and metal wires. The mechanical properties of the repaired specimens were measured, and the efficiency of each method was evaluated. The statistical results of this study revealed that geometric characteristics of a maxillary denture combined with the shape and pretreatment of reinforcement were the controlling factors for the overall mechanical behavior. Furthermore this study revealed that data with clinical significance can only be obtained by testing specimens similar to the original items used in dental practice.

Some factors affecting the transverse strength of repaired denture acrylic resin.

The aim of this study was to determine the transverse strength of repaired autopolymerising poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) resin. The edge profile (EP) of the repair surface and the powder-to-liquid (PL) ratio of the autopolymerising acrylic resin used for repairs were studied to determine their effects on the transverse strength of rectangular test specimens. Neither the EP nor the PL ratio affected the transverse strength of the test specimens (EP: P = 0.692, PL: P = 0.575). However, the EP significantly affected the type of failure (P < 0.001). The results suggest that autopolymerising PMMA of various PL ratios can be used to repair the fractured pieces of autopolymerising PMMA without affecting the strength of the repair.

Effect of powder-to-liquid ratio on the distortion of repaired denture acrylic resin.

The aim of this study was to determine the distortion of repaired autopolymerising poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) resin. Eighteen rectangular test specimens with a 45-degree edge profile repair surface were repaired with autopolymerising PMMA using different powder-to-liquid (PL) ratios. None of the test specimens distorted during repair, although microscopical examination showed porosities which may have been due to polymerisation shrinkage. The results suggest that autopolymerising PMMA with various PL ratios can be used to repair fractured pieces of PMMA without affecting the distortion of the specimen.

Denture Repair↗

Augmenting retention of a removable partial denture repair.

A simple technique improves the retention of a tooth to be added to an existing removable partial denture. The procedure includes placing a small contoured wire into the space provided for the acrylic resin repairing material.

Acrylic Resins↗

Simplified denture repair technique.

The use of a cyanoacrylate adhesive to accurately and easily assemble the fractured segments of a denture is advocated. The repair can then be accomplished quickly without the need to pour a stone cast so that the patient does not remain without the prosthesis for extended periods. In addition, dentures once deemed unrepairable by conventional methods because they were broken into many pieces can now be salvaged.
