Organization of the mitochondrial genome of mantis shrimp Pseudosquilla ciliata (Crustacea: Stomatopoda).

We determined the nearly complete mitochondrial genome of Pseudosquilla ciliata (Crustacea, Stomatopoda), including all protein-coding genes and all but one of the transfer RNAs. There were no gene rearrangements relative to the pattern shared by crustaceans and hexapods. Phylogenetic analysis using concatenated amino acid sequences of the mitochondrial protein-coding genes confirmed a basal position of Stomatopoda among Eumalacostraca. Pancrustacean relationships based on mitogenomic data were analyzed and are discussed in relation to crustacean and hexapod monophyly and hexapod affinities to crustacean subtaxa.

On the ultrastructure and permeability of taste buds of the marine teleost Ciliata mustela.

The abundant taste buds of the barbels and free fin rays of the five bearded rockling, Ciliata mustela contain an average of 100-150 cells, falling into two types. Tubule-containing cells ('t-cells'), tentatively identified as receptor cells, and each surrounded by fibril-containing cells ('f-cells') in the central part of the bud. t-Cells also occur in two concentric shells separated by indifferent epithelial cells at the periphery of the bud. f-Cells are characterized by their concentrations of fine fibrils, and by granules or vesicles of 180-190 mmu diameter. The 100 or so receptor cells in a taste bud are innervated by some 250 axons. Lanthanum penetrates more deeply into the extracellular space of taste buds than into the extracellular space of the general epithelium, perhaps indicating that a greater area than the mere protruding tip of receptor cells may be accessible to chemical stimulation. Degenerating cells may provide an important route of entry for such external agents.

New lignan glycosides with potent antiinflammatory effect, isolated from Justicia ciliata.

Two new lignan glycosides, 4-O-[alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1' "-->2' ')-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1' " '-->5' ')-beta-D-apiofuranosyl]diphyllin (1), named ciliatoside A (1), and 4-O-¿[beta-D-apiofuranosyl-(1' " "-->3' ")-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1' "-->2' ')][beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1' " '-->5' ')]-beta-D-apiofuranosyl¿diphyllin (2), named ciliatoside B (2), were isolated from the whole plant of Justicia ciliata. The structures of 1 and 2 were determined by spectral and chemical methods. Compounds 1 and 2 strongly inhibited the accumulation of NO(2)(-) in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells in a concentration-dependent manner with IC(50) values of 27.1 +/- 1.6 and 29.4 +/- 1.4 microM, respectively.

Cytotoxic lignans of Justicia ciliata.

Two new naturally occurring 1-aryl-2,3-naphthalide lignans, cilinaphthalide A (1) and cilinaphthalide B (2), and nine known compounds were isolated from the whole plant of Justicia ciliata. Their structures were established by spectral analysis, and their cytotoxic activity was evaluated against several different cell lines. The known compound, justicidin A, showed potent cytotoxic effects against T-24, CaSki, SiHa, HT-3, PLC/PRF/5, and 212 cells in vitro.

Evaluation of anti-tussive activity of Bergenia ciliata Sternb. rhizome extract in mice.

The methanol extract of the rhizome of Bergenia ciliata Sternb. (Saxifragaceae) has been evaluated for its potential in a cough model induced by sulphur dioxide gas in mice. The extract exhibited significant anti-tussive activity in a dose-dependent manner, as compared with control. The antitussive activity of the extract was comparable to that of codeine phosphate (10 mg/kg body wt.), a standard anti-tussive agent. The extract at doses of 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg body wt. (p.o.) showed significant inhibition of cough reflex by 28.7, 33.9 and 44.2%, respectively, within 90 min of the experiment.

[Microsporidians, cnidosporidians and ciliatae (Peritricha: Peritrichida: Mobilina), found in fishes from water bodies of the Minusinsk region].

During the period of 20 years (1964-1984) 10,000 fish specimens collected in water bodies of the Minusinsk depression have been examined by the methods of total and partial parasitological dissections. The studies were held in the Enisey, Abakan, Tasheba, and Tuba rivers, in the Krasnoyarskoye and Sayano-Shushenskoye reservoirs, and in some lakes. The data on a parasite species composition of microsporidians, cnidosporidians and ciliatae are given.

[Chemical constituents of Girardinia palmata ssp ciliata].

Thirteen constituents were identified from Girardinia palmata ssp ciliata C. J. Chen by using GC-MS, which amounted to 84.5% of the total peaks, the main constituent were linoleic acid (52.01%) and dimethyl fumarate (10.05%). The dissociated amino acids and KNO(3) in the sample amounted to 43.30 mg/100 g and 3.0%. Five compounds were isolated and elucidated as octadecane, hexadecylic acid, beta-sitosterol, p-coumaric acid and potasium nitrate.

[Chemical components of Lindernia ciliata (Colsm) Pennell].

Three known compounds were isolated from the petroleum ether extract of the whole plant of Lindernia ciliata. They are beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol and lup-20(29)-en-3 beta-ol. Their structures were established by IR, MS, 1HNMR and 13CNMR spectroscopy.
