A systematic literature review on low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma of the trunk.

BACKGROUND: Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma (LGMS) is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumor, with primary trunk involvement being particularly uncommon. Due to its rarity, associated diagnostic challenges, and variability in management, a comprehensive evaluation of the available evidence is required. This study aims to systematically review the clinical characteristics, treatment strategies, and outcomes of truncal LGMS. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase for articles published from January 1998 to January 2026. The review included full-text articles involving patients with a pathologically confirmed diagnosis of truncal LGMS. The collected data included patient demographics, tumor features, treatment modalities, recurrence, and follow-up status. RESULTS: Of the 404 studies initially identified, 30 studies involving 59 patients with pathologically confirmed truncal LGMS met the inclusion criteria. Outcome analyses of therapeutic management and clinical course included 45 patients with complete follow-up data, including 42 surgically treated patients and 3 non-surgically managed patients. The final evidence base consisted solely of retrospective studies and case reports. No prospective studies or randomized controlled trials were identified. Consequently, a descriptive statistical analysis was conducted instead of a meta-analysis. CONCLUSION: Current evidence indicates that wide excision with negative margins may be a reasonable primary treatment option for truncal LGMS, with case-based reports showing numerically lower recurrence after wide excision, although the evidence is limited and potentially confounded by multiple factors. Radiotherapy or chemotherapy may be considered only on a highly individualized basis for selected unresectable, recurrent, metastatic, anatomically constrained, or margin-positive cases. Given the very limited sample size and heterogeneous treatment indications across published cases, treatment efficacy cannot be reliably estimated from the available data. Prolonged long-term regular follow-up is recommended for all patients, considering the risk of late recurrence.

Transverse Tibial Transport for Limb Salvage in Ischemic Lower Extremity Disease: Technique, Mechanisms, and Clinical Outcomes-A Systematic Review.

Transverse tibial transport (TTT) is a surgical technique derived from Ilizarov's distraction osteogenesis principles that stimulates angiogenesis and microcirculatory regeneration in the ischemic lower limb without directly manipulating macrovascular anatomy. By creating a proximal tibial cortical bone window and distracting it transversely using an external fixator, TTT triggers converging cascades of growth factor release, endothelial progenitor cell mobilization, and immunomodulation that translate into improved distal limb perfusion and wound healing. Combined TTT plus endovascular therapy improves amputation-free survival versus endovascular therapy alone. Prospective randomized trials and standardized international protocols are needed to consolidate TTT's role in multidisciplinary limb salvage pathways.

Postoperative hypotony after retinectomy in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

We estimate the incidence of postoperative hypotony after retinectomy performed during rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery and explore clinical, surgical, and methodological factors associated with hypotony risk. We include human clinical studies reporting postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) outcomes after retinectomy or retinotomy for retinal detachment. Postoperative hypotony was defined as IOP ≤ 6 mmHg, with alternative thresholds (≤5 or ≤3 mmHg) retained for sensitivity analyses. A random-effects meta-analysis was used to pool hypotony incidence, with prespecified subgroup and sensitivity analyses according to retinectomy extent, tamponade strategy, hypotony definition, assessment timepoint, and vitrectomy gauge size. Study-level associations with visual outcomes and proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) severity were also explored. Thirty-three studies comprising 2673 eyes were included. The pooled incidence of postoperative hypotony was 13.71% (95% CI, 10.40-17.40), with substantial heterogeneity (I² = 83.2%). Hypotony incidence did not increase linearly with retinectomy extent, and similar rates were observed for extents of 180°-269° and ≥ 270°. Stricter hypotony definitions and later postoperative assessment timepoints were associated with a higher reported incidence. A significant negative association was observed between hypotony incidence and visual improvement rates (Spearman ρ = -0.47, p = 0.03). In contrast, no significant study-level difference in hypotony incidence was observed according to PVR severity grouping or vitrectomy gauge size. Postoperative hypotony after retinectomy is a frequent and clinically relevant complication, moderately associated with poorer visual outcomes and influenced by methodological factors rather than retinectomy extent alone.

The Effect of Mindfulness-Based Psychoeducation Program on Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Forgiveness Tendencies of Patients with Bipolar Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

This study examined the effects of a mindfulness-based psychoeducation program on mindfulness, self-compassion, and forgiveness in patients with bipolar disorder using a pretest-posttest randomized controlled experimental design. The study sample comprised of 40 patients (experimental group, n = 20; control group, n = 20). A mindfulness-based psychoeducation program was administered to the experimental group, while no intervention was administered to the control group. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Mindfulness Scale, the Self-Compassion Scale Short Form, and the Heartland Forgiveness Scale. The study revealed that the experimental group's mean scores on the mindfulness, self-compassion, and forgiveness scales following the intervention were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < .05). This study found that a mindfulness-based psychoeducation program increased mindfulness, self-compassion, and forgiveness in patients with bipolar disorder. The findings are limited to a small outpatient sample from a single CMHC and may not be generalizable to hospitalized patients with more severe clinical presentations. Mindfulness-based educational programs may enhance mental health, improve illness insight, support symptom management, and strengthen social functioning in individuals with bipolar disorder. The results emphasize the importance of integrating these programs into treatment processes and reveal the necessity for psychiatric nurses to actively implement mindfulness-based interventions. Psychiatric nurses should consider incorporating mindfulness-based techniques into their practice to improve the mental health of individuals with bipolar disorder, better understand the disorder, control symptoms, and improve social interactions.

Implementation outcomes of a dementia-focused intervention for family care partners and clinicians in home hospice care.

OBJECTIVES: End-of-life care for persons living with dementia in home hospice relies heavily on coordination between family care partners (FCPs) and clinicians (e.g., hospice social workers and nurses). FCPs and clinicians have reported support and knowledge gaps in end-of-life dementia care. Interventions are needed to improve FCPs' support and clinicians' educational gaps. METHODS: A pilot randomized controlled trial was designed to examine implementation outcomes for a dementia-focused end-of-life intervention for FCPs (n = 37) and clinicians (n = 15). Data on survey completion and acceptability were collected at baseline, during 4 follow-up visits, and at the conclusion of the study. RESULTS: Twenty-eight (75%) caregivers completed the post-study survey, and 10 (27%) reported using the structured worksheet. Thirteen (87%) clinicians completed the post-training survey, 8 (53%) completed the post-study survey, and 8 (100%) used the worksheet. Clinicians (n = 8) were satisfied or highly satisfied with the instructional videos, and half (50%) used the information frequently with patients. Both groups reported the worksheet helpful, easy to use, and satisfactory, though clinicians rated helpfulness slightly higher (mean = 3.88 vs. 3.70 for FCPs). Clinicians liked the worksheet's structured guidance and the enhanced collaboration. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS: This study provides preliminary evidence for implementation outcomes of a dementia-focused end-of-life intervention in home hospice. Findings suggest the intervention can be implemented in a hospice setting, with moderate worksheet uptake and perceived value among FCPs and clinicians.

Effectiveness of symptom map-based education in the management of premenstrual syndrome: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a symptom map-based educational intervention for the non-pharmacological management of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), with a focus on symptom reduction among women with differing baseline symptom severity. METHODS: This randomized controlled study was conducted between May and December 2024. A total of 110 women meeting diagnostic criteria for PMS were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 55) or a control group (n = 55) using block randomization, and 101 participants completed follow-up assessments. The intervention comprised structured education based on a PMS symptom map and evidence-based self-care strategies. Outcomes included PMS symptom severity (Premenstrual Syndrome Scale), pain intensity (Visual Analog Scale), psychological symptoms (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21), and PMS-specific life satisfaction. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT06585475. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, women in the intervention group reported significantly lower pain (adjusted mean 4.21 vs. 6.81, p < .001) and stress levels (8.54 vs. 12.03, p < .001) at follow-up. The intervention was particularly effective in reducing PMS symptom severity and depressive symptoms among participants with higher baseline symptom burden. Improvements in PMS-specific life satisfaction were observed, with reductions in depressive symptoms contributing to this effect. CONCLUSION: A symptom map-based educational intervention is a clinically applicable, non-pharmacological approach for PMS management. This structured education appears especially beneficial for women with more severe baseline symptoms and may be integrated into routine gynecological care to support individualized symptom management.

Review: The African turquoise killifish as a model for the integrative physiology of vertebrate aging.

With increasing emphasis on extending healthy lifespan, aging research requires vertebrate models that permit efficient mechanistic investigation and intervention testing within practical time and cost constraints. The African turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri) has attracted growing attention because it combines an exceptionally short life cycle with an intact vertebrate physiological context and an expanding genetic toolkit, enabling relatively rapid evaluation of candidate aging interventions and mechanistic analysis across molecular, tissue, and organismal levels. This review assesses N. furzeri from an integrative-physiology perspective, focusing on germline-soma interactions, gut microbiota-host crosstalk, nutrient sensing and metabolic remodeling, temperature responsiveness, and AMPK-mTOR-linked programs. It also examines expanding genome-engineering and reporter approaches that support mechanistic and tissue-resolved investigation of these physiological processes. Building on recent reviews of killifish biology, disease modeling, regeneration, and the hallmarks of aging, we synthesize evidence across major intervention domains, distinguish established phenotypic effects from incompletely resolved mechanisms, and highlight functional endpoints, methodological standardization, and the appropriate interpretation of the model's translational relevance. Together, these features position N. furzeri as a strategically useful vertebrate platform for rapid mechanistic testing, intervention evaluation, and prioritization of aging-related pathways. Future progress will require improved methodological standardization, tissue-resolved causal studies, and question-driven cross-species validation where appropriate.

Patient expectations assessed before randomisation and after the first treatment session, and their associations with pain outcome at 3 months in patients with tennis elbow: a secondary analysis of a randomised controlled feasibility trial in Norwegian secondary care.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate patients' expectations of pain improvement before randomisation (T1) and after the first treatment (T2), and to examine how expectations at these two time points were associated with pain outcome measured at 3 months (T3). DESIGN: Exploratory secondary analyses of a three-arm, randomised controlled feasibility trial in patients with tennis elbow comparing heavy slow resistance training, shock wave therapy and advice (1:1:1). SETTING: Outpatient clinic at Oslo University Hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Adults with lateral epicondylalgia, commonly known as tennis elbow. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Expected pain was rated on a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS, 0-10) at T1 and T2. Present pain (NRS, 0-10) was reported at 3 months (T3). Changes in expectations from T1 to T2 were summarised descriptively. Univariable linear regressions assessed associations between T3 pain and expectations at T1 and T2, treatment group and baseline factors. Explained variance was quantified by R2. Multivariable models including demographics and baseline pain were evaluated via adjusted R2. RESULTS: Fifty-four participants were included. In the shock wave group, nine (47%) came to expect greater improvement from T1 to T2; by contrast, in the advice group, seven (41%) expected less improvement. Expectations at T1 were not associated with T3 pain, whereas expectations at T2 were positively associated with T3 pain (b=0.61, 95% CI 0.33 to 0.89, p<0.01, R2=0.27), suggesting that higher expected pain at T2 was associated with higher reported pain at T3. Adding education and baseline pain increased explained variance modestly (R2 from 0.27 to 0.32). CONCLUSION: In this study, expectations measured after randomisation and one treatment session were associated with pain at 3 months for patients with tennis elbow. Larger, prospectively designed studies should investigate how postrandomisation expectations relate to clinical outcomes in non-blinded musculoskeletal trials. Can ChatGPT Replace Human Clinical Coders? A Comparative Study in Otology Billing.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the utility of the large language model (LLM), ChatGPT, for the analysis of operative notes and the generation of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes in comparison to human clinical coders. STUDY DESIGN: CPT billing codes assigned by ChatGPT were compared to existing billing data. Otology practice within a tertiary academic center. METHODS: About 191 operative notes from a single surgeon (9/2022-10/2023) were analyzed. ChatGPT-3.5 and 4 models were prompted for CPT codes based on operative notes. Assessment included determining exact and partial match rates, sensitivity and specificity for targeted procedures, and work Relative Value Units (wRVU) differences between ChatGPT-generated and human-assigned codes. RESULTS: ChatGPT-3.5 achieved exact matches in 22% of cases and partial matches in 32%, while ChatGPT-4 achieved 14% exact and 33% partial matches. When cochlear implantation (CI) was excluded, performance dropped significantly. For CI, ChatGPT-3.5 demonstrated a sensitivity of 94% and specificity of 90%, while ChatGPT-4 showed a sensitivity of 96% and specificity of 92%. In contrast, performance on cartilage grafting was poor, with sensitivities of 4.2% for ChatGPT-3.5 and 0% for ChatGPT-4. ChatGPT-3.5 and 4 showed moderate CPT code matching accuracy among themselves, with slight agreement to human coders. Both models tended to underbill for wRVUs compared to human coders, with significant differences in the values generated. CONCLUSION: This study assessed ChatGPT's effectiveness in automating CPT code assignment for otologic surgeries. While the models achieved high sensitivity values for assigning codes related to cochlear implantation, both models struggled with complex cases, failed to apply modifiers, and often assigned fewer wRVUs. The findings highlight ChatGPT's potential in medical billing but indicate a need for further refinement.

Association of Baloxavir Treatment Timing with Serial Interval and Household Transmission of Influenza through a Likelihood-Based Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Baloxavir treatment is associated with reduced influenza transmission within households, and the serial interval varies by treatment status. However, it remains unclear how baloxavir-induced changes in the serial interval relate to household transmission. We aimed to quantify the model-based association between baloxavir treatment timing and the serial interval and household transmission risk. METHODS: We conducted a household survey of influenza cases in Japan between October 2018 and February 2019. We defined the likelihood-based model integrating the serial interval distribution by treatment status and the secondary attack rate (SAR) using individual-level data from index cases. Using this model, we estimated the reduction in the serial interval associated with baloxavir treatment. RESULTS: Compared with untreated index cases, baloxavir-treated cases were estimated to have a serial interval density reduced by 21.42% following treatment. Treatment within 24 hours was associated with a 0.1685 reduction in the area under the curve, with smaller reductions as treatment was delayed. Earlier treatment was associated with a shorter, more concentrated distribution, whereas treatment 72 hours after onset resembled untreated cases. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight that baloxavir treatment is associated with a shorter serial interval and lower estimated secondary household transmission risk. We provide model-based estimates suggesting that earlier administration is associated with a greater reduction in serial interval density and estimated transmission risk, which may inform public health strategies for infection control.

Characteristics and functions of a cell adhesion molecule PvCadN in Penaeus vannamei during WSSV infection.

Cell adhesion not only maintains the integrity of the organism, but also plays an important role in the immune system, which is involved in modulation in the interaction between host and virus. In this study, a novel cell adhesion molecule from Penaeus vannamei, designated as PvCadN, was investigated. It had the typical molecular characteristics of cadherin family, with multiple extracellular cadherin repeat domains, a transmembrane region, and a conserved β-catenin-binding motif. Pvcadn is expressed ubiquitously across all detected tissues, with the highest transcriptional level in gills. RNA interference-mediated silencing of pvcadn significantly impaired the adhesion ability of shrimp hemocytes. Upon WSSV infection, pvcadn showed a tissue-specific expression pattern, with upregulation in gills and downregulation in hemocytes. Knockdown of pvcadn markedly suppressed the transcription of WSSV immediate-early gene ie1 and replication of the viral genome in vivo, suggesting that PvCadN acted as a potential virus-associated molecule. Furthermore, it was found that PvCadN was regulated by Lvβ-catenin, a core molecule in the Wnt signaling pathway that functions in innate immunity, at the transcriptional and protein levels. Silencing of lvβ-catenin significantly downregulated pvcadn transcription, and Lvβ-catenin bound directly to the Cadherin C domain of PvCadN. In summary, the study revealed that PvCadN was a key cell adhesion molecule involved in WSSV infection, which was regulated by Lvβ-catenin. Our findings will provide fundamental data for further investigation into cadherin-mediated immune regulation in shrimp, and offer new insights for the prevention and control of WSSV.

Sodium Glucose Co-Transporter 2 Inhibitors and Ventricular Arrhythmias in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review of Observational Studies.

BACKGROUND: Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) may exert antiarrhythmic effects, but their association with ventricular arrhythmias remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the association between SGLT2i use and the risk of ventricular arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, and sudden cardiac death compared with other antidiabetic medications or no SGLT2i use among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CENTRAL were searched for observational studies published between March 2013 and March 2026. Quality was assessed using the Risk of Bias In Non-Randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool, alongside evaluation of pharmacoepidemiology-specific biases. RESULTS: A total of 17 studies (16 cohort and one nested case-control) were included. Based on ROBINS-I, seven studies had moderate, eight serious, and two critical risks of bias. Eleven studies had at least one pharmacoepidemiology-specific bias. For ventricular arrhythmias, estimates ranged from a protective effect (hazard ratio [HR] 0.20, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.04-0.97) to a potential increased risk (odds ratio 1.87, 95% CI 0.89-3.95) with SGLT2i use. For cardiac arrest, estimates consistently reported a lower risk with estimates that ranged from HR 0.63 (95% CI 0.59-0.68) to HR 0.85 (95% CI 0.82-0.88). The only study on sudden cardiac death reported a potential risk reduction (HR 0.62, 95% CI 0.38-1.01). CONCLUSIONS: While the association between SGLT2i and ventricular arrhythmias remains inconsistent, the use of SGLT2i likely reduces cardiac arrest and may reduce sudden cardiac death, suggesting a possible protective effect on ventricular arrhythmias among patients with type 2 diabetes.

Efficacy of a high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for craving reduction in adolescents with gaming disorder: a 4-week randomized control trial with 24-week follow-up.

BACKGROUND: With the widespread popularity of online gaming, gaming addiction has come under scrutiny. While there is ongoing research on the diagnosis and treatment of gaming disorder among adolescents, the clinical robustness and reliability of intervention strategies remain uncertain. METHODS: A 4-week, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of noninvasive, high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in alleviating psychological craving in adolescents diagnosed with gaming disorder. Sham rTMS was administered to the control group using the tilted-coil method. Both groups of participants were treated with SSRI medications. A total of 80 adolescents with gaming disorder participated in this study, and 73 ultimately completed the 24-week follow-up. The primary outcome was the change in craving levels before and after the rTMS intervention, as assessed by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes included changes in anxiety and depression levels before and after the intervention, as assessed by the HAMA and HAMD. RESULTS: We assessed levels of psychological craving, anxiety, and depression among adolescents with gaming disorder at baseline, after completing a 4-week intervention, and at a 24-week follow-up post-intervention. Our repeated-measures MANOVA results, adjusted for course variables, revealed a significant main effect of rTMS intervention on psychological craving levels in adolescents addicted to online games (F(11, 781) = 11.238, P < 0.001, partial η² = 0.142), as well as significant main effects on time (F(11, 781) = 6.809; P < 0.001, partial η² = 0.091) and group effects (F(1, 71) = 26.707, P < 0.001, partial η² = 0.282). In addition, repeated-measures ANOVA results showed significant time effects for anxiety (F(2, 142) = 20.747, P < 0.001, partial η² = 0.234) and depression levels (F(2, 142) = 22.277, P < 0.001, partial η² = 0.285) among adolescents with gaming disorder, with nonsignificant between-group effects and no intergroup interaction. In the active stimulation group, changes in psychological craving levels after 4 weeks of treatment were significantly and positively correlated with changes in anxiety levels after 4 weeks of treatment in adolescents addicted to online games (r = 0.335, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that high-frequency rTMS targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex may be a promising approach for reducing psychological craving in adolescents with gaming disorder. Association between fruit and vegetable intake and risk of depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

Depression is a leading cause of global disability, and identifying modifiable lifestyle factors is a public health priority. We conducted a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies examining the association between fruit and vegetable intake and incident depression. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched through November 2025. Data on study characteristics, dietary assessment, outcomes, effect estimates, and covariates were independently extracted by two reviewers. Random-effects models were used to calculate pooled relative risks (RRs), and linear and non-linear dose-response relationships were assessed. Heterogeneity was evaluated using I2, and evidence certainty was rated with GRADE. Thirteen cohorts with 385,449 participants and 26,592 depression cases were included. Highest versus lowest combined fruit and vegetable intake was associated with a 37% lower risk of depression (RR: 0.63; 95% CI: 0.50, 0.80). Each 200 g/day increase corresponded to a 16% risk reduction (RR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.74-0.94). Separate analyses showed that fruit and vegetable intake reduced depression risk by 16% and 12%, respectively, with a non-linear dose-response for vegetables. These findings indicate that higher consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with lower depression risk, supporting dietary strategies as a potential approach for mental health prevention. However, given the observational nature of the included studies, these results should be interpreted with caution, as residual confounding may partially account for the observed associations. Registration: This study was registered at PROSPERO (CRD420261279998).

The genomic origins and evolutionary path to a key innovation in the world's most venomous snakes.

Evolutionary innovation is a catalyst for the colonization of new environments and the adaptive radiations of major groups. Novel traits typically evolve through the modification of preexisting characters, but the genetic paths underlying their origin have been challenging to trace, and the general requirements for and relative order of different kinds of gene mutations have been difficult to assess. Here, we trace the genomic origins of four procoagulant venom toxins (factor X, factor V, group I phospholipase A2, and Kunitz-type toxins) that collectively underlie a novel, especially potent blood-clotting venom type in the recently evolved Australian brown snake and taipan clade. We find evidence for a previously unknown fifth toxin, coagulation factor VII, and show that the toxins evolved through two distinct genetic paths. The factor X and factor V toxins evolved through the sequential de novo co-option of ancestral clotting factor proteins that entailed their heterotopic expression in the venom gland, the fixation of segmental duplications containing each locus, and subsequent gain-of-function mutations that rendered factor X and factor V constitutively active. In contrast, the phospholipase A2 and Kunitz-type toxins evolved by modifying the functions of neurotoxins that were part of the venom arsenal. Our findings support models in which innovative mutations in single-copy genes precede gene duplication in the evolution of novel proteins and offer a rare view into the genesis of a complex trait that has played a central role in a major adaptive radiation.

Molecular mechanisms underlying umami taste perception: A DIA-based proteomic analysis of Agrocybe aegerita peptides.

The mechanisms underlying the modulation of the salivary perception of umami peptides remain poorly understood. Herein, three umami peptides (DDL, DEL, and ENG) obtained from Agrocybe aegerita were used to investigate the regulatory role of saliva in umami taste perception via a combined approach involving sensory evaluation and proteomics analysis based on 4D-DIA technology. The results revealed that umami intensity peaked at 10 s after ingestion and was accompanied by a significant increase in saliva secretion (p < 0.05). Further proteomics analysis revealed that lactotransferrin and proline-rich proteins are closely associated with the sensory perception of umami peptides. Differentially expressed proteins were mainly enriched in pathways related to saliva secretion and proteasome function. This study provides new insights from the perspectives of salivary proteomics and dynamic salivary secretion, contributing to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which saliva regulates umami perception.

Defining Gaslighting in Gender-Based Violence: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review.

In both public and academic discourse, gaslighting has gained increased attention, especially regarding psychological abuse, power imbalance, and gender-based violence (GBV). However, the term gaslighting is often inconsistently defined and conflated with broader forms of manipulation. It is also largely examined in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV), which ignores its occurrence in other forms of GBV. The present study presents a systematic review that synthesizes interdisciplinary academic literature to create a comprehensive framework of gaslighting. This framework includes the specific tactics that are used by perpetrators of gaslighting, the social-psychological outcomes experienced by survivors, and the role of systemic inequalities and social power dynamics. A search across multiple databases identified 96 records that discussed gaslighting in relation to GBV. Thematic analysis revealed a two-part framework for understanding gaslighting: (a) gaslighting tactics, which were categorized into cognitive and perceptual manipulation, emotional and psychological abuse, power dynamics and control, and additional forms of manipulation and (b) survivor outcomes, including disruptions to perception and memory, emotional distress, social isolation, and resistance strategies. The findings show that gaslighting is more than just an interpersonal act; it is sustained within social structures, where perpetrators use identity factors and forms of marginalization to exploit survivors. Overall, this review presents a comprehensive definition of gaslighting that illustrates its epistemic nature and its intersection with systemic oppression. It is suggested that future research studies gaslighting in GBV contexts beyond IPV, while practice and policy efforts should seek to enhance recognition and support for survivors.
