A transcription factor, Ndt80p, has been identified that has a critical role in the pathway that controls meiosis--sporulation--in budding yeast. Ndt80p coordinately controls genes that mediate spore formation and progression through the two meiotic divisions; it may also be a target of a checkpoint control.

Transitional B cells mark the crucial link between bone-marrow (BM) immature and peripheral mature B cells. Examination reveals unexpected heterogeneity, consisting of contiguous subsets with phenotypic and functional differences. Data point to the late transitional B-cell stage as a crucial juncture at which developing B cells gain access to splenic follicles, become responsive to T-cell help and lose sensitivity to negative selection, characterizing the immature B-cell response to B-cell antigen receptor (BCR) signaling in vitro and in vivo. The biological and molecular processes directing maturation through this stage are becoming clearer through biochemical studies and murine models deficient in various components of the BCR signaling pathway.

A proline, a leucine, and two cysteine residues, introduced at positions 19, 28, 31, and 32 of bovine pancreatic RNase A, i.e. the positions occupied by these residues in the subunit of bovine seminal RNase, the only dimeric RNase of the pancreatic-type superfamily, transform monomeric RNase A into a dimeric RNase, endowed with the same ability of BS-RNase of swapping its N-terminal segments. The thermodynamic consequences of the progressive introduction of these four residues into RNase A polypeptide chain have been studied by comparing the temperature- and urea-induced denaturation of three mutants of RNase A with that of a stable monomeric derivative of BS-RNase. The denaturation processes proved reversible for all proteins, and well represented by the two-state N<-->D transition model. The progressive introduction of the four residues into RNase A led to a gradual shift of the protein stability toward that characteristic of monomeric BS-RNase, which, in turn, is markedly less stable than RNase A with respect to both temperature- and urea-induced denaturation. On the other hand, the thermal stability of a dimeric active mutant of RNase A is found to approach that of wild-type seminal RNase.
In this paper we propose a new algorithm for subgraph isomorphism based on the representation of molecular structures as colored graphs and the representation of these graphs as vectors in n-dimensional spaces. The presented process that obtains all maximum common substructures is based on the solution of a constraint satisfaction problem defined as the common m-dimensional space (m< or =n) in which the vectors representing the matched graphs can be defined.
Examination of the crocin bleaching assay performance and in-house validation were focused on probe and test compound characteristics, conditions for peroxyl radical generation, reaction monitoring, and expression of results. HPLC and spectrometric examination showed that any authentic commercial saffron (origin, grade) can be used for probe preparation given that (a) interferences, such as tocopherols, are removed, (b) working solution concentration is adequately adjusted, and (c) stock probe solution changes during storage are not neglected. As suggested by log P values, calculated for a great number of radical scavengers (AHs), any AH more polar than Trolox (common reference compound) can be tested in the aqueous environment of the assay. AH activities order obeyed principles of structure-activity relationships. The assay was robust toward preheating of the azo-initiator (2,2'-azobis(2-aminopropane) dihydrochloride). Reaction monitoring through periodic UV-vis spectra recording was very informative. An alternative expression of results as "percent inhibition of crocin bleaching value", % Inh = [(DeltaA(0) - DeltaA)/DeltaA(0))] x 100, is proposed for [AH]/[crocin] = 1, instead of the so far used k(rel) values. The above findings also lead to analysis cost and time reduction.
The field of law and psychology has existed, in some form or another, for almost 100 years. The article presents a brief overview of law and psychology in the last century and shows that there actually have been two movements--one in the first third, and the other in the latter third, of the century. Given these movements, why has the law and psychology movement had so little impact on the law (and, for that matter, on psychology)? Failure to ponder--and answer--this question, may result in the demise of the movement. Given the power of law over individuals and societies, though, the application of psychology to the law is an important and useful way to assess the validity of laws and to ensure that psychological research can influence the law. This paper discusses 12 reasons that may have contributed to the relative failure of the law and psychology movement thus far. In presenting each of the reasons, and considering factors that have led to some successes in the field, the paper discusses methods and strategies that may help ensure the continued vitality and strength of the field of legal psychology.
INTRODUCTION: Transcatheter radiofrequency ablation of posteroseptal accessory pathways (AP) is challenging. A number of different interventional approaches have been suggested by different groups. The selection of the initial approach is crucial in order to reduce radiation exposure and the number of unsuccessful lesions applied. We present our ablation technique as guided by a simplified electrocardiographic analysis of the delta wave polarity and the electrophysiologic mapping results. METHODS AND RESULTS: Out of 35 manifest APs encountered in the right (n=17) or the left posteroseptum (n=18) in 35 patients, 34 were successfully ablated. Despite their left sided location, 7 of the 18 "left" sided APs were ablated after switching from an initial arterial to a venous approach looking for an appropriate target site in the right posteroseptal space or within the coronary sinus network. The other 11 left sided APs were ablated in the mitral ring, on 2 occasions, on their atrial aspect through a retrograde transmitral approach. On the contrary, 16 of the 17 "right" sided APs were successfully ablated exclusively through a venous approach. Fourteen of these were ablated in the right posteroseptum, in 2 cases, only after reaching their ventricular aspect. Two right sided APs were interrupted in the coronary sinus os and the middle cardiac vein respectively. CONCLUSION: It appears that even though the electrocardiographic and electrophysiologic location of the AP in the posteroseptal space helps select the appropriate initial approach, it does not always guarantee a successful ablation procedure in the expected site of the corresponding atrioventricular ring. Not uncommonly, it will be necessary to look after intermediate target sites within the coronary sinus to improve the overall ablation success rate.
