Inventory responding as a model of people's acceptance of personality interpretations.

The hypothesis was tested that inventory responding modeled the acceptance of personality feedback. A barnum group (n=40) was asked to rate the personal accuracies of a list of personality inventory items and then an equivalent list of bogus personality feedback. The two lines of evidence which supported the model were (a) that the correlation between their inventory ratings and their feedback ratings was not only Significant (p < .001) but achieved a ceiling magnitude, as evidenced by a control group's (n = 40) data; and (b) that the variables influencing, inventory responding exerted an equal influence upon feedback acceptance, Contrary to the model, it was found that feedback was accepted more highly than were the inventory items. Conclusions were that inventory responding, as a model of feedback acceptance, is accurate with respect to individual differences but somewhat inaccurate with respect to overall levels of acceptance due to the additional influences of persuasion. It was also concluded that clients' acceptance or rejection of personality feedback is not evidence of the validity or invalidity, respectively, of assessment devices. A reformulated model of personality feedback acceptance was proposed.

Medicaid acceptance and availability of timely follow-up for newborns with Medicaid.

OBJECTIVE: Decreased physician participation in Medicaid has been shown to affect adversely timeliness of adult acute care and pediatric specialty care, but it is not clear whether this is the case for newborn follow-up. The objectives of this study were to determine whether there is a difference within clinics in the timeliness of follow-up appointments that are given to newborns with Medicaid compared with newborns with private insurance and to determine whether there is a difference between clinics that do and do not accept Medicaid in the timeliness of appointments that are given for newborn follow-up. METHODS: A randomized crossover study was conducted among general pediatric clinics and practices that were identified from the yellow pages and Internet searches of hospitals and health departments in 8 metropolitan areas from September 2003 to March 2004. A simulated parent telephoned clinics to find the earliest available appointment for a 1-day-old infant who needed routine follow-up after discharge that day. Clinics were randomly assigned to receive a first call from a patient with either Medicaid or private insurance; each clinic received the same call at least 3 weeks later with the patient's insurance status reversed. The main outcome measure was whether the appointment was timely (< or =2 days from the day of the call). RESULTS: Of 401 participating clinics, 22% did not accept Medicaid. Among clinics that accepted Medicaid, availability of a timely appointment for a newborn with Medicaid was similar to that for a newborn with private insurance (87% vs 90%, respectively). Appointments that were provided to privately insured newborns were as likely to be timely in clinics that accept Medicaid as in clinics that do not accept Medicaid (89.5% vs 93.4%, respectively). However, providing timely appointments was significantly less likely in clinics that were in high-poverty locations compared with clinics that were not (86.1% vs 92.7%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Although newborns with Medicaid did not have access to >20% of clinics because of their insurance, among clinics that did accept Medicaid, timeliness of available follow-up was similar for newborns with Medicaid compared with newborns with private insurance and similar between clinics that did and did not accept Medicaid. However, to the extent that care for newborns with Medicaid is concentrated in clinics in high-poverty areas, some newborns with Medicaid may not be able to receive timely appointments.

Insecticidal paint and fumigant canisters for Chagas' disease control: community acceptance in Honduras.

This study assessed public acceptance for two new vectorial control techniques for Chagas' disease: insecticidal paint and fumigant canisters. The study compared the two with traditional fenitrothion insecticide spraying. An experimental field study was performed in an endemic area of central Honduras from August to November 1992, a year after the initial application of the treatments. The objectives of the study were to determine the acceptability of the tools on the part of the population whose homes were treated, and on the part of the personnel applying the treatments. The sample size was drawn up according to a uniform protocol applied in six Latin American countries. For this study a total of 651 persons were surveyed in 15 rural communities. Along with the surveys, focus groups were used to collect information to learn the reasons for accepting or rejecting particular treatments. The survey was done with heads of households. Focus groups were done with heads of households and also with the field operators who applied the treatments. The research showed that insecticidal paint had a low level of community acceptance (28.8%). Field operators strongly disliked the paint because of problems with its transport, application, unpleasant smell, and very low effectiveness against triatomines and pest insects. The traditional insecticide was more acceptable to the community (93.9%) and to the field operators, especially for its strong effect against the triatomines and pest insects. The results showed that in order to increase the public acceptance for insecticidal paint, it would be necessary to make the paint easier to transport and apply and to increase its effectiveness. Because of their very low effectiveness, fumigant canisters did not represent an acceptable alternative for triatomine vector control. A public educational effort should be a component of any new control method developed.

Acceptance reaction: intragraft events associated with tolerance to renal allografts in miniature swine.

Inbred miniature swine that are treated for 12 d with a high dose of cyclosporin A develop tolerance to MHC class II matched, class I-mismatched renal allografts. The aim of this study was to clarify the intrarenal allograft events associated with the development of tolerance in this protocol. Morphologic and immunologic studies were performed in serial biopsies from accepting grafts after 12 d of cyclosporin A treatment (n = 4) and were compared with those from untreated control rejecting grafts (n = 4). In accepting grafts with stable function, a transient interstitial infiltrate developed. The cellular infiltrate had many similarities to that in rejecting grafts; both had T cells and macrophages, similar proportions of T-cell subsets, and a similar frequency of in situ nick end labeling (TUNEL)+ apoptotic infiltrating cells. However, the cellular infiltrate in the acceptance reaction was distinguished by less T-cell activation (interleukin-2 receptor+), less proliferation (proliferating cell nuclear antigen+) of infiltrating cells, and less graft cell apoptosis in arteries, tubules, glomeruli, and peritubular capillaries. Thereafter, the infiltrate in the accepting grafts progressively resolved with decreased cell proliferation, activation, and apoptotic graft parenchymal cell injury, but the high frequency of apoptosis persisted in graft-infiltrating cells. In parallel to the intragraft events, donor-specific unresponsiveness developed as assessed by cell-mediated cytotoxicity by blood mononuclear cells in vitro. In conclusion, the acceptance reaction in transplanted grafts is characterized by progressive resolution of T-cell proliferation and activation and of cell-mediated graft injury, as well as prolonged T-cell apoptosis. These intragraft events suggest that both T-cell anergy and T-cell deletion occur in the graft during the development of tolerance. Some of the described immunopathologic findings (activation, proliferation, apoptosis) may be useful in distinguishing acceptance from rejection, as well as in predicting later graft acceptance in tolerance induction protocols.

[Acceptance of dialysis therapy in elderly patients with chronic renal failure].

The aim of the present study is to clarify relevant factors concerning acceptance of dialysis therapy in elderly patients with chronic renal failure. Patients with advanced renal failure aged 60 years and over (152 cases) were investigated. The male/female ratio was 85:67. The age was 76 +/- 7 years (mean +/- standard deviation). The proportion of patients with acceptance of dialysis to patients with non-acceptance was 121:31. In all patients, the cause of renal failure (non-diabetes/diabetes), serum albumin level, comorbid conditions, ambulation, cognitive function, marital status, and presence of younger cohabitants were surveyed. The patients were divided into two groups for each category. Patients were categorized as the young-old (aged 60 to 74 years) and the old-old (aged 75 years and over). Serum albumin level was categorized as either low (less than 3.5 g/dl) or normal (3.5 g/dl and over). The number of patients who accepted dialysis therapy was evaluated for each group. Intergroup comparisons were carried out by the chi 2 test. Statistically significant factors were age (p < 0.0001), serum albumin level (p = 0.016), ambulation (p = 0.011), cognitive function (p < 0.0001), and marital status (p = 0.009). Multivariant logistic regression analysis was also performed using background factors as explanatory variables and acceptance or non-acceptance of dialysis therapy as a dependent variable. The factors presented by the nominal scale were converted to dummy variables. Statistically significant factors were age (p < 0.0001) and cognitive function (p < 0.0001). Serum albumin level, ambulation, and marital status were significant only in the chi 2 test. This could be explained by the close correlations of these factors with age and cognitive function. The old-old category and poor cognitive function were dominant factors with regard to non-acceptance of dialysis therapy.

Consumer acceptability versus trained sensory panel scores of powdered milk shelf-life defects.

The objective of the present work was to correlate consumer panel acceptability versus trained sensory panel scores for appearance and flavor defects likely to appear during storage of whole milk powder. Descriptors selected for the study were: acid, caramel, cooked, dark color, lipolysis, and oxidized. For each descriptor a set of nine samples with different intensities were measured for acceptability and likelihood to consume by a 50-member consumer panel and for sensory intensity by a trained panel. Linear correlations between sensory acceptability and trained sensory panel scores were used to determine the sensory failure cut-off point for each descriptor, except caramel and cooked, which were not critical from the consumer's point of view. Differences in acceptability were found between Argentine and Uruguayan consumers for oxidized samples, while for lipolysis flavor, Argentine and Costa Rican consumers behaved similarly. For the color descriptor, significant changes in acceptability measured on a hedonic scale did not mean that consumers refused to consume the product. In contrast, for flavor descriptors, as soon as a significant decrease in acceptability occurred approximately 30% of the consumers said they would not consume the product. The sensory failure cut-off points presented in this paper can be used as a guide in future studies on the shelf life of MP and can also be of value in establishing sensory specifications for quality control programs. The methodology of correlating consumer acceptability to sensory panel scores and, thus, defining sensory failure is an improvement over more arbitrary criteria presented in most shelf-life studies.

Acceptance of screening and abortion for Down syndrome among Finnish midwives and public health nurses.

In this study we evaluated how well maternal serum screening and abortions for Down syndrome were accepted among midwives and public health nurses, and compared how those who accepted and did not accept abortions for Down syndrome differed from each other. The questionnaire was mailed in 1998 to 400 midwives and 400 public health nurses. 79 per cent responded. The majority said that all pregnant women should be offered a screening test for Down syndrome, but less than half accepted abortion for Down syndrome. Thus, the 'informative part' of the screening (serum screening itself) is supported more often than the 'operative part' (selective abortion)-or at least the 'operative part' was found to be a more difficult question. We suggest that whereas screening may be perceived as a question of more choices, information and self-determination, abortion is more clearly a moral question. The professional background characteristics and attitudes of those accepting and not accepting abortion for Down syndrome were relatively similar, but having a midwife's education, practical involvement in serum screening and having patients with Down syndrome were associated with a somewhat higher percentage of acceptance and a lower percentage of 'don't know' responses.

[Type 2 spinocerebellar ataxia: acceptance of prenatal diagnosis in descendents at risk].

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 spinocerebellar ataxia is a hereditary degenerative disorder of the nervous system. Advances in molecular genetics have made it possible to carry out presymptomatic and prenatal studies. A programme to define the strategies and principles for doing this has been devised. OBJECTIVE: To find the level of acceptance of prenatal diagnosis in couples at risk, and to determine the effect of different variables on this acceptance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We made a descriptive type study of a series of cases. The study group included 226 persons. Forty of these were couples of descendents and the remainder were asymptomatic descendents. We applied a questionnaire, after prior information as to the aims of the study and obtaining the consent of the participants. RESULTS: Regarding acceptance of prenatal diagnosis by couples of descendents, we found that most (77.5%) accepted this and only 2.5% did not. Prenatal diagnosis was accepted by 67.74% of the descendents themselves. CONCLUSIONS: In general there was a high level of acceptance. 159 of the 226 questioned claimed that they would like to have more children and 98.7% of these accepted the test, whilst only 0.01% refused it. The main reasons given were the hope of having healthy children and that the disease would not occur in future generations.

[Comparison of the state of acceptance by patients after total and partial laryngectomy].

In this study authors asked about 400 patients (or their families) after surgery procedures because of larynx carcinoma. The questions was connected with acceptance the postoperative state. We collected 170 answers on the question, 137 from patients after total laryngectomy and 33 after partial laryngectomy. On of the question exactly sounded: how patients accepted their postoperative state? They had 3 answers: not content, agreed with the injury or content with the treatment. The results was very astonished: from extreme discontent patients to very satisfied. The most acceptable from the patients point of view is the partial laryngectomy. Even if that sparing operation is enough for some time patient is more satisfied than after total laryngectomy. The acceptance for the total operation is lower, but grows together with a time alive's. The important conditions of acceptance the injuries after the total operations are the awareness of the threats because of the condition, the possibilities of the treatment and it's choice and the knowledge about a rehabilitations after surgery and possibilities to achieve it. The acceptance of the injuries depends on the acceptance this patients by society.

Acceptance of long-term contraceptive methods and its related factors among the eligible couples in a selected union.

This study focuses on the acceptance of long-term contraceptive methods and its related factors among the eligible couples in the rural area of Bangladesh. Among the respondents sixty were acceptors and one hundred seventy were non-acceptors of long-term contraceptive methods. Socio-demographic characteristics of the both acceptors and non-acceptors of long-term contraceptive methods were same except their age. Acceptors of long-term contraceptive method were older than the non-acceptors. Regarding the reproductive characteristics acceptors were married for longer time than non-acceptors. There was significant association between acceptance of long-term method and number of male children and desired additional children. Acceptors had more living male children and desired less additional children than non-acceptors. Regarding reasons for acceptance 35% accepted the method because the methods are long-term and safe while 30% accepted because the methods well suited them and 18% because accepted don't need to take daily like pills. Main cause for not accepting long-term methods fear of side-effects (22%) lack of proper knowledge about the methods (21%) followed by husbands objection (12%), desire for more children (10%) and health reasons (8%).

Acceptability of Praneem polyherbal vaginal tablet among HIV uninfected women & their male partners in Pune, India--Phase I study.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: The number of HIV infected women is steadily increasing worldwide and women controlled methods to prevent HIV are urgently needed. Vaginal microbicides are products for vaginal administration that can be used to prevent HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). We conducted a Phase I safety and acceptability study of Praneem polyherbal tablet, a candidate microbicide, among HIV uninfected women in Pune, India. METHODS: Twenty eligible women were requested to use the product intravaginally once daily for 14 consecutive days between menses. Safety was assessed by clinical examination, laboratory monitoring and colposcopy. Acceptability was assessed after 14 days of product use through structured questionnaires, focus group discussions among participating women, and in-depth interviews with a subset of 5 randomly selected male partners. RESULTS: Praneem polyherbal tablet was found acceptable by the study participants with 90 per cent of the participants showing 80 per cent and more acceptability score. Discharge of the product residue was reported as a concern by 6 (30%) of participants. Nineteen (95%) female participants liked the smell and the same number reported that the product was easy to use and did not affect the usual sexual pleasure. However, men reported lack of sexual satisfaction. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: Product characteristics received good acceptability score in women. However, studies of long-term safety and acceptability among at-risk population would provide more detailed information about its long term acceptability.

The acceptability of interventions for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder among elementary and middle school teachers.

The acceptability of behavioral and pharmacological interventions for children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among elementary and middle school teachers was examined. Teachers (n = 147) from four suburban school districts read vignettes depicting the use of two behavioral interventions (i.e., daily report and a response cost procedure) and the use of psychostimulant medication in the treatment of ADHD and then rated the acceptability of each. Teachers' ratings of acceptability were examined as a function of knowledge of ADHD and level of teaching experience. Results demonstrated that elementary and middle school teachers each rated daily report as significantly more acceptable than response cost and stimulant medication. Also, teachers rated medication as more acceptable when used in combination with behavioral interventions than when used in isolation. Knowledge of ADHD and years of teaching experience generally were unrelated to ratings of acceptability. Cluster analyses demonstrated that teachers can be differentiated into several profile types with regard to their perceptions of treatment acceptability.

Acceptability of alcohol-based hand rub during neonatal care in rural Ugandan households: a qualitative study nested within the BabyGel trial.

BACKGROUND: Poor access to water, sanitation and hygiene exacerbates the spread of infections among newborns. The BabyGel cluster randomised trial assessed the effectiveness of a community-level alcohol-based hand rub with a training component in reducing infection or death rates among newborns in Uganda. OBJECTIVE: Nested in the BabyGel trial, this study investigated the acceptability of the BabyGel intervention among mothers and household members in Eastern Uganda, using the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability. METHODS: In 2022, we conducted individual semistructured interviews with mothers, and group interviews with mothers and other household members, all recruited from intervention-arm clusters. Thematic analysis combined inductive and deductive coding, structured by the framework's seven constructs: affective attitude, burden, ethicality, intervention coherence, opportunity costs, perceived effectiveness and self-efficacy. RESULTS: Twenty mothers and 14 household members participated in 10 individual and 10 small group interviews. Participants found the intervention generally acceptable, appreciating its convenience and perceived protection against infection. Many described hand hygiene changes that persisted beyond the intervention period. However, concerns related to its harmful effects, spiritual beliefs and social tensions with visitors occasionally influenced its use. CONCLUSION: Alcohol-based hand rub combined with a training component was generally well accepted, driven by perceived health and practical benefits, although concerns related to safety, belief systems and social dynamics remained. Because data collection coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, a period of heightened hygiene awareness, the acceptability observed could differ in nonpandemic periods. Culturally adapted education, community engagement and reinforcement of correct use may enhance acceptability and sustainability in similar settings.

Predictors of influenza vaccine acceptance among healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies investigating predictors of influenza vaccine acceptance have focused on high-risk patients or health care workers. Few studies have examined flu shot acceptance among healthy adults in workplace settings, even though influenza vaccine is recommended for this group as well. METHODS: Two studies investigated predictors of flu vaccine acceptance in workplace samples of healthy adults. In the first study, 79 university employees were interviewed, while in the second, 435 corporate employees completed a questionnaire. RESULTS: In the first study, flu shot acceptance was predicted by perceived effectiveness of the vaccine (r = 0.36), perceived likelihood of vaccine side effects (r = -0.32), and having received the shot in the previous year (r = 0.25). In the second study, flu shot acceptance was again predicted by perceived effectiveness (r = 0.49), likelihood of side effects (r = -0.31), and previous flu shot (r = 0.66) and was also related to older age (r = 0.10) and to predicted percentage of co-workers who also received the shot (r = 0.24). CONCLUSIONS: The current studies indicate that predictors of vaccine acceptance among healthy adults are similar to those identified in studies of high-risk patient populations and health care workers.

[Acceptance of wearing a hearing aid by children].

BACKGROUND: Having one or 2 hearing aids is not a guarantee that a child will wear the instruments constantly. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hearing aid acceptance by children (assessed using the daily wearing time). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 116 parents of a patient population of persistent hearing-impaired children with a need for a hearing aid (average age 51.1 +/- 30.1 months) rated the wearing acceptance of their children on a 5-point-Likert-scale. This assessment was made after the child had received its individual hearing aid for its specific disorder (on average after 5 months). Hearing levels ranged from mild to profound. RESULTS: 58.6% of the children accepted their electroacoustic aids amplier "excellent" or "good", 18.1% did it "average", 23.3% "bad" to "miserable" or even "not at all". There was no significant difference between girls and boys. The wearing acceptance from children with unilateral hearing impairments was reduced, especially from those with chronic conductive disorders by malformations of the ears. Very young children (prelingual hearing impairments), mainly those with additional handicaps and/or not German speaking homes demonstrated a "bad" to missing wearing behaviour. Hearing acceptance did not correlate with the severity of the disorder. CONCLUSION: The wearing acceptance as one aspect of compliance should be rated before each regular hearing aid control. Finally it is an efficient and sensitive mean to detect faulty amplification and changed diagnosis.

Self-image and its relation to denture acceptance.

A study was initiated to determine whether a relationship exists in geriatric patients between self-image and the extent of their denture acceptance. Three assessing instruments were employed, namely, a "Focused Interview," the embedded-figures test, and projective figure drawings. Scores obtained were compared with scores on the Denture-Acceptance Rating Scale. The research results derived from the data follow: 1. Comparison of the degree of denture acceptance with the scores on all three assessing instruments showed significant relationships. Therefore, the hypothesis under study was accepted. 2. The "Focused Interview" appeared particularly well suited to a geriatric population, because it was nonthreatening, provided a communication outlet, and can be readily employed by a practitioner. 3. The embedded-figures test and the projective figure drawings appeared less appropriate for this population because of factors such as psychomotor retardation, perceptual difficulties, and diminution of ego strength which accompany the aging process. 4. The men in this study appeared to accept dentures more readily than the women, manifested higher morale, and were more field-independent. 5. Employed subjects, as compared to unemployed, showed significantly greater denture acceptance, higher morale and self-image, and a greater degree of field-independence. These factors appeared related to greater flexibility of adaptation. 6. Socioeconomic factors appeared to be significantly and positively related to morale factors. 7. Complaints regarding dentures were largely of a physical nature. They appeared to relate primarily to difficulties with adjustment to the new artifact which represented an alteration of body image for the subjects. 8. The study provided corroborative evidence of the need for the dentist to make an initial assessment of those personality factors in his patients which might limit his ability to provide adequate dental services.

Hepatitis B vaccine acceptance among adolescents and their parents.

PURPOSE: To employ theoretic health decision models to determine strategies that may facilitate acceptance of hepatitis vaccination programs among adolescents and their parents/guardians. METHODS: The research was conducted in a hospital-based adolescent clinic between January and September 1994. Eighty adolescents and 65 parents participated in a survey that was administered to new patients. Two groups (those who accepted the vaccine and those who rejected it) were compared for each variable and potential predictor. RESULTS: The majority of adolescents and parents indicated that their clinic care provider was the initial contact to initiate discussion about the vaccine. Significant predictors for parents' acceptance of the vaccination were their perceptions of the vaccine's importance to the care provider and concern about the general risk of the disease. Predictors for adolescents' acceptance of the vaccine was their perception that their parents felt it was important and the extent to which they believed it was for "everyone" to be vaccinated. CONCLUSIONS: Providers should be aware that adolescents are influenced by their parent's opinions and that the care provider's endorsement of the vaccine may be a key factor in parental acceptance of the vaccine. Results of this study have potential implications for public health approaches to facilitate vaccine acceptance.

Enzymatic deamidation of methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins in Escherichia coli catalyzed by the cheB gene product.

The methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins (MCPs) of Escherichia coli undergo reversible methylation that has been correlated with adaptation of cells to environmental stimuli. MCPI, the product of the tsr gene, accepts methyl groups at multiple sites that are located on two tryptic peptides, denoted K1 and R1. A second modification of the MCPs, which is not methylation, has been designated the CheB-dependent modification. A CheB-dependent modification occurs on methyl-accepting peptide K1 and allows additional methyl groups to be incorporated into this peptide. We have performed partial amino acid sequence analyses on radiolabeled peptides K1 and R1 derived from MCPI and have identified several methyl-accepting sites. We found that, in the absence of CheB-dependent modification, a site in peptide K1 is unable to accept methyl groups. Correlation of this protein sequence data with the nucleotide sequence of the tsr gene [Boyd, A., Kendall, K. & Simon, M.I. (1983) Nature (London) 301, 623-626] suggests that CheB-dependent modification of MCPI is the enzymatic deamidation of glutamine to methyl-accepting glutamic acid. Possible roles for this deamidation in bacterial chemotaxis are discussed.
